A few years back, Randy Newberg had a show where his son had drawn a very coveted Wyoming bull elk tag. They waded through many bulls before his son harvested a real nice bull. Randy kept commenting that he would have shot a bull sooner but he made it look like his son was super picky and passed bull after bull until he found what he liked and wanted. The area had a lot of public access and the terrain wasn't extremely difficult. Anyone know what hunt area that was? "Me and my son have been saving points for Wyoming elk now for years and trying to figure out where and when to go. We aren't max points yet but close.

Just an FYI, if you aren't already max points in WY, you will never be max points. Also, blatantly trying to snatch up hunt areas based off others shared content doesnt exactly make people want to jump in and share info. People who dissect pics and videos trying to figure out areas turns many off. Myself included :twocents:
-
:yeah: There are 21,000 people with max points! There will never be enough tags to clear those guys out much less the 19.000 with one short of max.
Even if you are at max, odds aren't great. I don't know what unit he hunted, but just glanced at a unit known to have good animals and the odds to draw were 8% at max points, 0.17% for one less than max. That will not change, every year you will be as far from the finish as you are now.
There's always the random draw if you are feeling lucky. It looks like about 0.17% give or take for any given unit. That means you will have a 50/50 chance if you put in for 294 years.

I am just starting my intel collecting for a hunt that I plan on doing sometime in the next 2 to 4 years. I'm not trying to find somebody's "Secret Spot". I think in the show that I mentioned above he actually mentioned the unit. I'm not looking for the place in the unit that he found his specific bull. Just trying to collect information for a possible future hunt. I don't think that puts me as "blatantly trying to snatch up other people's hunt areas". Especially in limited entry areas where once you have drawn the tag, you probably will never have the chance again in your lifetime as you mentioned above that if you don't have max points you never will.
I can see I hit some kind of soft spot for you and I am sorry.
-
But you asked for the specific unit :dunno: that hits a nerve for me and a lot of guys who dump hundreds of hours into reasearch, share our hunts, only to have people dissect our pics and videos looking for anything that will give away the unit and area. Had it happen no less than 2 times this year alone with CO and it's frustrating. All I'm saying is not the best approach if wanting help with units
-
Randy Newberg didn't keep the unit secret so why should anyone else?

More like 1380 people for elk with max points. Just sayin. :sry:

You're right, I looked at the wrong chart which showed total points, not hunters.
That said, it's still 0.7% unless you have max right now.
-
There are several areas in Wyoming with high quality elk opportunities that do not require maximum points. With just a few less than maximum points you should be able to draw some excellent tags. Best of luck.
-
Randy Newberg didn't keep the unit secret so why should anyone else?
Well Randy apparently kept the unit secret enough that the OP had to start a thread to figure out which unit it was :dunno: :chuckle:
-
I'd like to hunt that unit once in my lifetime as well. My knees are getting bad, so that unit appealed to me for that reason alone ... Easier access. Maybe I'll get lucky and figure it out by the time I have max points which is years away ...
-
Find the show and watch it again. I haven't seen it but will look it up now that may interest is up.

Its on a podcast. I listened to it and don't recall which unit it was but didn't really pay attention either. It was a good story regardless.
-
The problem with Randy Newberg is that he'll also post fake background pictures from other hunts to throw people off from where they are actually hunting. I unsubscribed from his channel and stopped visiting his website after I heard that.

I don't see an issue with it. I try my best to keep my spots secret but then again, I am not a public figure.
-
It's one thing not to tell anyone. It's another to blatantly mislead someone.

Understood but its also one thing to try and use a picture or something like that to try and swoop in on an area that somebody worked to find. :twocents:
-
I’m not trying to find an area or someone’s secret wonderful private spot. I’m trying to find a unit/GMU. If I told you I shot by bull elk in the Dayton area this year, I’m in no way giving info on my hunting spot. Your talking hundreds of square miles in a unit/GMU. Very very different. A unit has 100’s of areas. I found the episode I was looking for. It’s a YouTube series. “Late Wyoming elk hunt with Randy and Matthew Newberg 2018”. Good one to watch. It goes day by day coverage of the hunt with each day being its own episode.
-
Shh, we're keeping Dayton a secret. :chuckle:
The forum seems extra touchy lately.

Great, now my odds of drawing are going from one in 200 years to one in 400 years :chuckle:
-
I remember back when people thought Michael and Janet Jackson were the same person.
Could Randy and Steve be one person?
-
There will be another video of the same hunt area with Randy's uncle from their hunt this year. It sounds like they saw just as many elk and bulls...so, I'm guessing if it wasn't a max point unit in the 2019 draw...it should be for 2020. Unless of course demand for lots of big bulls on public land in moderate terrain drops unexpectedly next year :chuckle:
-
He said in the comments that he doesn't give out the specific units but that one wasn't a max point unit....at least it wasn't when they drew.
I think it will be hard to figure out the exact unit unless you are intimately familiar with WY. The comments seemed to suggest many of the bulls might have been on private and there was some BLM you needed to catch them on. That doesn't help as most of WY has patches of BLM.
-
I know which unit it is, but I am so tired of seeing unit names and hunting areas on social media that I would rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon before giving up the info.
-

Except it was revealed on another hunting forum.

What a cool hunt!
-
A lot of people think they know which unit it is but they’re likely wrong.

A lot of people think they know which unit it is but they’re likely wrong.
Some of us like idahohuntr and myself really do know. I personally choose not to reveal hunting units and areas publicly, PM's are different. I am not saying the OP wanted an answer in the public forum but it really can and does hurt hunting and fishing areas.
-
Dvolmer, if you don’t have try gohunt. Sometimes you can find a promotion code that’ll give you 30 free. Use the layers to see where you might be able to draw with your amount of points and go from there. A lot of good info on there. Odds are correct because it’s looking at last years applicants but it can give a trend.
Good luck

I agree with you and also would not reveal areas but I still think a lot of guys that think they know the hunt may be wrong. There’s a lot of bs that gets spread around.
-
I have it narrowed to two units, I'm 90% sure it is one of those.
I think I know the unit you guys are talking about and that's one of the two.
-
If you are going to try and figure out where he hunts by asking on a forum, you are shooting yourself in the foot. If had already figured it out, would you post a thread titled " Hey guys, this is where Randy Newberg hunted in that video"? No. Just do some detective work and I bet you get a good idea where, then keep it to yourself
-
It wouldn't take much of a search to figure out what unit it is. It was talked about ALOT last year on some other forums. And the points to draw jumped for it this year.
-
I find it grossly offensive when people ask me if sitka gear is worth buying when I have spent thousand of dollars of my hard earned money buying and field testing. If you want to know....just buy your own!!!!

Sorry man....I know nothing about Wyoming Elk otherwise I would offer a better post. With that said, I think your question was legit and find it hilarious that people are so secretive of spots they "MAY" only hunt a couple times in their lifetime. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: There is great humor in that!! Which suggests that other high quality units will have fewer applicants...
For many years I subscribed to the Huntin' Fool. It was an invaluable resource to indicate which units not to apply for. :twocents:

It's all moot, if you didn't have enough points to draw it this year you never will.

You hit that right on.
Really ridiculous re-actions to a simple question about a tv show maybe thousands saw.
And posted on line somewhere.
I mean I can see somebody wanting to protect their spot in the state they live. But in a special draw unit of another state. My gosh if you are that paranoid you need to get off the internet. Do you guys circle back to see if anyone is following you when you go hunting. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I have no problem helping with hunting, I just don't like to see units and areas or rivers posted publicly. Its my opinion, it doesn't mean that you cant publicly post your hunting areas and GPS coordinates.

Entiat Archery....drew with 7 points and shot a great big spike. It taste delicious and I will likely draw again in the next 5-10 years. Saw lots of big bucks....I think I blew 8 or 9 stocks on reallllly nice bucks. I passed on 3-4 smaller 3 points before deciding to take a meat buck on my last day. If you draw this tag next year, I will gladly help you out. 30 people a year draw this tag and only a handful of the 30 put an arrow in the big boys. Why wouldn't someone help another hunter out.
Now....am I going to give away my general season honey holes......No Tell'm Mountain.
For the naysayers.......get over your egos. I won't tell what I know......oh wait, I don't know anything because I too have not drawn the tag. I have only done internet research which makes me better than the rest. I may never draw but if you do get lucky....your on your own. MAKES PERFECT SENSE..... :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

You're missing the point. Nobody said they wouldnt help. In fact, a few months ago when dvolmer PM'd me about wyoming elk options and having no clue where to start I offered to do some digging for him which I recently started. Not some 5 second gohunt search but actual unit break downs. But yeah I'm just a terrible human
The hangup I have and others as well is the act of trying to pick apart others shared media in an attempt to find out where they are hunting. Whether that's an otc spot or a 20pt unit it makes no difference. It's happened to me just this year by two different groups of people and it's just a crappy thing to do. Yeah I get it, it's a hunting show and Randy probably expects it but it doesnt make it an ok practice :twocents:

First off......I thought your response was terrible.....not you. I don't you at all and never said you were a "terrible human"....not that that is handled, lets move on. If you don't want your media picked apart....don't post it. I totally get it and that is the reason I stopped posting pics back in 2012/2013 ish..... of my public land kills in Washington. But to give info or pick apart a video / photo that has been published on the open web or national television.....well that is just a silly reason to get bent!!! Every time I see a cheeseburger commercial I pick it apart to see what restaurant needs to be visited for dinner.....isn't that the reason they publicize these pics and videos....because they want people to see them. If they didn't...they would just not post them. :dunno:

In an out of state draw where it is literally like hitting he lottery......just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I am different than most, I would hate to win the lottery with another person from Washington and have to share 10's of thousands of acres in the elk woods somewhere in Wyoming where we will likely never cross paths. Are you afraid that one more person in that draw is going to diminish your odds that much more? Just asking, as I am curious.....not to be an a$$.....but that logic doesn't make sense to me.

That's all good but neither does it mean you're right or better just because you feel a certain way or say that. Karl does more to help people particularly with out of state hunt selection than most of the site combined. I hate to nitpick but I also think it's a weak comparison between a bonus point hunt like your Entiat spike and a preference point state.

The bold part is the major fallacy of your argument...posting a unit with moderate terrain, lots of big bulls, plenty of public land and oh by the way go watch this show and see for yourself the huge bull these guys killed there...that doesn't change the odds by 1 or 2 people. Its gone from being a unit you could 100% draw with less than max points a year ago to almost assuredly next year will absolutely take max points.
I guess what irks me on widely posting any number of units that were a little under the radar is it screws the guys who've done a lot of work to identify these units. People posting about the Entiat, Henry Mountains, or really any primo unit in any state...I don't really care either...they are so well known and have such low odds I agree with the sentiment...what's another 1,000 applicants?? Not a big deal.
But when people start blabbing about units not widely known - that have better odds and take less than max in PP states...not cool. :twocents:
-
Once again the point of my contention is missed. It's not about posting units, otc, max points etc. Its the disection of media for the purpose of figuring out where someone hunts. It's a form of "spot jumping" and should never be condoned. But I guess I'm in the minority on spot jumping. My list of people I'll help just gets a bit longer I guess.
-
It's really not going to change much, if any. The unit had point creep and would be at max next year with or without the show. Any unit in WY with hunting like that is or will be at max points.
The problem is twofold:
1. The ratio of hunters to elk
2. Western points systems
Randy isn't the problem.
-
Nope he sure isn't.
It's his capitalizing on the commercialization of the resource that's the problem.
-

:yeah: I agree 💯 percent. That’s is why I rarely post pic s. Which sucks because I love looking at others but I have become I guess paranoid. If there is a bigger dB move than stealing a guys hunting area by scrounging the internet for pictures I don’t know what it would be. I could care less if people post units that have almost impossible odds or even just bad odds. I can’t see how even thousands of new applicants even move the needle on some of those hunts. I knew some under the radar units that had good odds but those were ruined years ago by hunting fool and go hunt etc etc. There was a time mostly western guys with local knowledge were applying but with the draw services you have the whole country putting in from Seattle to New York and everyone in between. Technology has helped everyone with go hunt and on x just even gps but they have screwed some of my old honey holes. That’s the problem not some post on a Washington hunting forum. That and weenies trying to steal hunting spots from pictures lame!

And just so we are all completely clear, I like DV. I think he's a good hunter and family man. Anyone who can raise that many girls and keep his sanity has to be a solid individual :chuckle: I've got 3 pages of notes on Wyoming elk units I'll never have the points to draw to prove it. I get 20+ PM's annually asking about units, states, specific hunts etc and I try to answer them all honestly and thoroughly. Whether its hunts I know, hunts I don't know, etc. Juat this year I mailed my personal paper maps of a CO unit complete with specific spots to a member. Another member I met at his work to go over maps. That guy killed a STUD buck on that hunt too which I absolutely love! Gives me great satisfaction to be a small part in someone's success though a small part.

I know I sure do appreciate the advice Karl has given me. He is definitely an asset to the forum.

Now you’re gonna get 200+ pms asking for help :chuckle:

I feel like Newberg shouldn’t drop so many hints about the area, it’s not necessary. It’s almost like a commercial for gohunt. “You too can find hunts like this if you subscribe to gohunt”, and don’t forget to use the promo code Randy!

Hell of a standup thing to do for a complete stranger!

This forum sure is an interesting place. There's currently a giant thread condemning Steve Rinella for mentioning what unit he hunted in during a episode. If you believe half the folks on that thread he singlehandedly ruined blue mountains elk hunting. On this thread we have a guy looking for a specific unit based on a show and people are condemning Randy Newburg for taking added steps to make sure that it was harder to identify. We have Jrebel essentially saying you deserve to have your spots taken if you post a pic yet there is a dozen posts mentioning "man how come no one posts pictures anymore"
For the record I think swiping or attempting to swipe spots based on pics, video, etc is pretty darn lame. Networking or getting intel is one thing but the new version of cyber scouting that has led to everyone being afraid to post any background is a sad state of affairs.
I'll also vouch for Karl as a standup guy with extreme willingness to help. He doesn't know me from adam but several years ago he was nice enough to give me some pointers and starting points in Montana that led to a successful first out of state trip. There has been many more since but those first tips helped me get my feet wet.
