Anyone want to BS with me what they know about it.  Anyone have local knowledge.   I'm trying to film there not hunt so dont worry about me zeroing in on your tag.   Feel free to PM me to not attract attention.   I usually figure out an area myself.   If I can save a couple tanks of gas or the possibility of losing interest before I figure it out then maybe some local knowledge might help.

Good luck with the info search. Are you still searching for calendar bucks? You seemed to have posted quite a few dandies this year.

I'd like to get some winter shots for next years possibly, but just love big muleys.  ITs fun to explore country you'll never get a chance to becasue of draw odds.    Wind River range is putting out some bigs but thats a little far for me.   The Methow is a ghost town and thats normally where I'd spend time on the winter range.   I understand Mt Jefferson has some phenomenal bucks.  I'd kinda like to see that for myself.

I did good this year on the Calendar.  I think I have only posted pics of one deer thats in the Calendar so far.  All I have posted have been the rejects.

I'll certainly comb some other sites.   I was hopeing we might have some Oregon transplants here.   At least here folks know me and know that I'm not going to ruin anything or hunt/steal their spots.

Hey guys, I'm also going to be "taking pictures" next September from about the 9th-22nd. Any honey holes you'd recommend in the NE?  :) Best of luck, Bone!

I think I have ignored looking into this area as I cant imagine it being that great the fact its next to a reservation.  I think its a 6 deer per member allowance.

Well that was cheerful.   SOunds like Washington minus the wolves.

Did you post on ifish?  I didn't see it.  Figured you'd get a lot of griping about the natives and loss of quality in that unit.  :-)

Oregon's deer numbers are down across the board; between the winters, poaching, etc..  And Oregon manages deer for opportunity, not quality.   So finding a good location to get lots of photos for your calendar isn't easy.

There are still big bucks in all the east cascades units.  Just have to try hard to find them, and might not be worth the return on time invested due to smaller quantities of them.   Honestly this time of year your odds are better of finding them in the farm fields.   Or hanging out in the towns.  Suburbs of Bend are holding some large bucks right now.

You could also just go to Umatilla NWR.  There is a reason that buck tag takes forever to draw.

There’s already an active thread.   And yes, mostly natives and cats.  All negative.

I was going to suggest driving around Bend and Sisters.

I tried that once.  It was a cluster.  Traffic was a beast.   I was hoping for something that wasnt in someones yard, but maybe thats what it takes these days.  I see why most of the wildlife photographers are so content with Arsenal.

Now if Bucknorris was still alive......  His kids should be popping up.

I have archery hunted down by Summer Lake south east of Bend and just NE of the town of Paisley. We saw lots of nice mulie bucks there is Sept. years ago..I think the name of one of the roads taking off of the main Hwy was Government Harvey Pass. Just don't go into the local watering hole wearing camo.... There is a hot springs right at the end of the lake where the Indians would have their winter encampments...Lots of obsidian in the local hills.

I lived in Sun River 14’ , 15’ and 16’ spent most of my time in Upper Deschutes between 3 Sisters and Bachelor. Poked around in November each yr and never could quite pinpoint a rhyme or reason to seeing the mature deer. They just kind of appeared in the pines and juniper and then were gone. No real congregating of herds it seemed, I had heard those winters were fairly mild so that could be skewing what I was learning.

Spent little time around Camp Sherman. Never saw a true giant but enough decent bucks to dream of drawing. Never happened, then I moved.  :chuckle:

Would love to someday head back to shed hunt some of the areas I learned. Good
Luck in your search!

This reminds me, I have a photo somewhere of a huge pine tree on a FS rd in the Metolius. Large font paint read  “No poaching Dave!”

:chuckle: Could be an issue in there.

Ya pop can. He was killed by maybe an auction tag holder maybe? Can’t remember. The kill drew lots of criticism. I know that much.

i would recommend the Interstate unit down by Kalamath falls.   The late youth rifle tag there is fantastic to have. I imagine there some big boys in there now. Quit the drive thou.  I had the N. Warner archery tag next door this year and was not impressed
