Title: Missing PM's
Post by: elkh8me on December 21, 2019, 09:30:23 AM
I had 7 messages in my inbox.  They have been there for a while, as i was saving them.  Looked today because i had a new message.  Old messages are gone?  They were there yesterday.
Have i been hacked by the Russians?

The first time I've heard of such a problem and don't know why they would be gone, has anyone else had this problem?

Maybe that’s your issue?

This will get deleted.  But I have pictures of all this so I'll post it, you know where mods can't quite get it.   lol   Mods can and will and do read our private messages.     :chuckle:

No reason to delete anything and I’m not sure why you’d think or assume it would get deleted. I even quoted it so it can’t get deleted. It is impossible for us to access your messages unless we change your password. I can reset passwords. Done it for folks dozens of times.  In theory I guess if I changed your password, I could log into your account and access your messages. Here’s the kicker though. If I did that, you wouldn’t be able to access your account because I have the password. Your current password isn’t visible to us or anyone but you.  Believe what you want but that’s the truth. If you have photos indicating otherwise, please enlighten me. I’m happy to pm you and investigate further.

So if someone forgets their password and asks me to reset it, I will do it and will include a note that says what I changed the password to along with instructions to change it again once you’re logged in so I don’t know what the new password is. Every time.

So please. If you have photos indicating fowl play from one of our moderators, please forward them on to me. I’d love to get to the bottom of it. I’m ready and waiting.

I also just learned that every time we reset someone’s password, it’s logged in the moderation log.

I just went through the entire administrative dashboard and into another moderator's profile to verify this:

I could not see any messages. Each member has total control over their messages here on the forum and they are completely private unless you share your password with someone else to access your account, otherwise there is no way that anyone else can log into your account and access your messages.

As was mentioned we can change the password on any account, the software is set up so that we can do that when people forget their password, so they can get back into their account. But even when we change passwords it doesn't allow us to see the old password, that's why we have to give members a new password if they forget their old password. After a moderator gives a member a new password the member can change it again after they login to their account so that no one has their password.

We can also make changes to profile settings, for example, I could remove any advertising off anyone's profile who hasn't paid to be a sponsor. But there is still no way to see any of anyone's messages.

Re: Missing PM's
I still haven't heard of any other members missing PM's, I wonder if the member didn't accidentally delete some of their messages?

Message Limit
There is a limit to how many messages you can keep, I think members can keep 100 messages, after that you can't receive new messages until you delete some of the old messages. This limit reduces the amount of forum memory and needed.

More Messages
You can upgrade your account status to "Forum Sponsor" for $20 per year and then you can keep up to 1000 messages in your inbox.

Please post your photos so we can get to the bottom of this, I can have our software guy try to fix whatever the issue is?

There is a setting in profiles where the system auto deletes PM’s after X days. I wonder if this could be the culprit.  I posted screen shots above. The OP would have to check their settings to find out I guess.
