I’m headed back for deer this year.  Gotta pan to use my elk and lope points sometime in the near future as well.

Been building Antelope points for a couple of years for me and the boys.  Next year is PathfinderJR's Senior year in college, so this may be his last season (at least for a while).  I think it may be time to cash them in.  I think we'll average out at 2 points each.  Just want a fun hunt with a decent amount of animals to look at.  We should be able to draw a fair hunt with 2 points, right...?

2 points in the special draw should get you into a decent hunt. Antelope is becoming very popular in Wyoming with guys looking to do a western hunt. Units that had leftovers in years past did not this year. It may turn into a points race in the coming years.

Kind of what I figured.  If anyone has any two-point unit suggestions, feel free to PM me... ;)

I'm at 19 points for sheep and Moose, 11 for antelope, 9 for elk and 7 for deer. Hoping for maybe moose and antelope this year. Antelope I will put in with my daughter who has 4 points so hopefully we can get a good tag when our points are averaged out.

You are correct.  Saw some fantastic bucks scouting this year and during the elk season.  Hopefully I can find a good one and it all comes together.

I’ll be in H with my little Bro.  Looking forward to it.  Never hunted together out of state when we both have tags.   I hunted H in ‘09 and ‘10 and G last year so I have some experience there; hoping to put it to use on a couple mature deer.  I’d love to get my brother on a giant.  He’s spent a lot of days helping me kill good deer.

Unit K for me this year I hope for deer and 99 for antelope.  In the special draw in the past I have been able to draw every year.  Those days are coming to an end as applications for Wyoming are going up in all areas and districts (along with all of the other western states).  Its all Trumps fault!!!!  His booming economy is to blame!!!!  Everyone seems to have a little bit of extra dough to splurge with!!! (hahaha).  Its time for Wyoming to increase their fees and bring down the applicant numbers.  I think you are going to see increases in fees in all of the highly sought after western states for out of state hunters.  Its just a business model to them.  Its sad that Washington state hunting has went into the toilet compared to just 10 years ago and that out of state hunting fees are just going to continue to increase.  Hunting will be something only the rich will be able to due in the near future.  Will be 1-3 years until I try to blow my elk points over there.  The research has began!

yeah but not to the point where we should cut our own wrists. Vast majority of the time, the people complaining about point creep are the ones that are one or two points back trying to draw a tag they literally can't draw. There is a serious lack of understanding with how these draw systems actually work. Sorry to derail this one I just really hate to see people advocate the further deterioration of hunting for their personal gain.

I'll be in for elk and deer in WY this year.

Definitely don't disagree with you.   I'm coming out of the no mans land with moose.  Still there with sheep.   Wolves have punched a hole in my dreams with tag decreases.

12 points for Elk and Deer, 5 points for Antelope. I will roll the dice again this year on Elk and Deer. One day I will draw the units I want.

Saw some great bucks come out this year!     I have 6 points right now and that's my plan for 2021....

6 on Antelope going in for this year, haven't decided which unit yet...

I have 8 points for deer, elk and antelope.  I will probably finally try for a deer tag, but have no idea where yet. Maybe a second choice antelope again as I have had a few fun 2nd choice hunts over the last couple of years.

9 DEER POINTS... I'm looking for a area/region that has hunts in november (rifle) as I'd rather hunt elk in September. I see a few options on the WYF&G site but not sure what is the best area to choose....Any suggestions on the best unit/Region for a November rifle deer hunt w/9 points?

Thanks guys.

I thought you only got credit for 10 points in draw regardless of how many u had, then 25% went to random.    Then other pool was for special draw ( more expensive ) with same 75/25 split.
Title: Re: Wyoming 2020
Post by: Stein on January 07, 2020, 08:16:09 PM
Max points increases by one per year. It is basically the number of years since they started the points system.  You have max if you bought a point every year and have never drawn.

For the regular draw, 75% of the regular tags go to highest points and 25% go into a random draw.

There is also the special draw.

I'm for a general elk tag and think ill start buying points for deer and antelope too. Wonder how moving the draw date will effect application numbers.

Post by: BeerBugler on January 08, 2020, 08:07:50 AM
14 points is max, 60/40 split for regular/special, 75/25 split for points/random for regular and special. Wish the deadline was in May, what’s the point if you can just modify/withdraw in May anyways.

If I was the state of Wyoming, I would go away from the regular price and charge the special price for all of their tags.  In MOST (not all) cases, they turn away enough people in the special draw that could have filled the regular quota.  Its just pure business to them.  Yes it is sad that hunting out of state is turning into a rich mans sport but business is business.  If you were selling widgets and you were selling 60% of them for a $100 and 40% of them for $200 and were turning massive amounts of people away that were willing to pay the $200, you would re-think your business model and sell all of your widgets for $200.  Just plain old common sense and business.  They don't owe anything to the out of state hunter.  Their interests are in their residents and their herds.  I cant believe I am saying this but it only makes sense.  Especially if you live in the state of Wyoming.  Studies show, the guy that is willing to spend twice the price for the tag is also willing to stay in a motel instead of his truck.  He's also more apt to eat at the restaurants and not out of their ice chests.  Businesses would also flourish.

For elk this is all true, the hunting media has turned elk into a cash cow for the states that have them, but I’m guessing a lot of people would be out at the $614 price point for a buck antelope

I bought the bullet last fall and bought points for the first time (antelope, deer, elk).  Thinking about putting in for an antlerless elk tag here in the next couple weeks.  Any suggestions for a unit/tag with decent amount of public (not wilderness though, not hiring a guide for antlerless) with decent success rates?  Ideally I'd pick up some antlerless antelope tags too for an area relatively close.  At this point, just trying to learn the lay of the land a little and maybe coming back with some meat for the freezer while starting to build up points.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions... beats putting together a spreadsheet or something!

If you are looking at multiple hunts out of state or multiple states, Gohunt is pretty much mandatory.

Thanks. He was bummed he couldn’t go to Montana with me this past November, so I figured I’d plan something for 2020 where hopefully (fingers crossed) the weather is a bit more mild (I know they got hit with early snow this year), and there should still be plenty of animals to see.
