Be nice if they could at least salvage some of the meat-

As of this year, the National Park Service is attempting to shoot every mountain goat in Grand Teton National Park with the use of helicopters. The goats are not native to the area and park officials are arguing they pose a threat to the area’s struggling population of native bighorn sheep. The Service is concerned that the goats could transmit disease(s) to sheep and may out-compete them in their alpine habitat. Others, including @wygameandfish, have criticized the eradication effort, calling it wasteful and dangerous.
They argue that volunteer hunters should be allowed to carry out the plan.
Another change allowed meat from the killed goats to be salvaged, but recovering any animals shot this coming week is unlikely, Germann said.
“We will retrieve carcasses if we can safely do so, but we believe that may be very challenging,” she said. “If we do recover any carcasses this go-around, they will be used for research purposes.”
The research project, she said, is a collaborative effort with the California Department of Wildlife and University of Utah to look at body condition and nutrition in wild goat herds.

Why not make money and let people hunt them instead?
-
Another reason to strongly dislike the NPS. I wonder if their historical supporting documents and report for the Tetons were as shabbily done as the one for the OP?
-
Why not make money and let people hunt them instead?
Because they can just tax us more heavily to get the money without increasing hunter opportunity
-
Why not make money and let people hunt them instead?
because this is an extermination, not a hunt.
-
Who is to say that the goats couldn't naturally migrate to these mountains over time, maybe decades or centuries?
Just because the Gov't says thay aren't native the NPS wants to kill'em all :bash:
if that logic is true, then wolves are invasive and need to be killed

I'll just leave this right here ...

I wonder if WDFW will write a letter like this to ONP?

Thanks but that doesn’t answer the question.

Hes saying they want it done quickly and efficiently. Sharpshooters in choppers would be more efficient than hunters. I get that, but still think they could generate a ton of revenue selling tags to hunters, say for even one or two years, let hunters get the majority of them, then use the choppers to finish off the few remainders. Seems like a good compromise. Less money spent exterminating fewer animals, plus more money gained allowing hunters to do their part, all while adding hunting opportunity for an animal that many want to hunt, but may never be able to otherwise.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If nothing else, it covers the cost of sending in the cleaners. :dunno:

All the while non native feral horses are running rampant on public land all over the west, pushing out native wildlife. And no one can do a thing about it....... :bash: :bash: :bash:

Because clueless idiots romanticize horses, but not goats.

Because the state would sell the tags, not the feds. The feds aren't interested in hunting, supporting hunting, fishing or anything else in the parks. They picked an arbitrary point in the history of the planet and determined that whatever was there on that special day is native and everything else must go.

The difference is Grand Teton NP is under concurrent jurisdiction in Wyoming, meaning both the state and feds have governing authority. However, the NPS takes the lead.
Olympic and Mt Rainier NPs are exclusive federal jurisdiction, meaning the state has no jurisdiction. That's why in the WDFW fishing regs the boundaries all start/end at the park, even though the rivers flow further into the park. When Kalaloch beach opens for razor clam digs you see WDFW Officers patrolling with NPS LE Rangers. WDFW Officers have no jurisdiction in the park so they essentially help the NPS with clamming enforcement and the NPS handles all the violations.
