Title: Rifle rebarreling Prices
Post by: Rat44 on January 22, 2020, 08:55:17 PM: I am looking into having one of my rifles re barreled .
Only contacted one shop so far and was quoted approx $850.
This includes clambering,bedding etc.
Is this the going price for this service ?
Been years since I have had work done at a shop.

Barrels alone can range all over the place. If the chambering is unique and they have to buy or make odd ball reamers that can get expensive. Bluing, sights, crown, etc.

I trust the guys work or else I would have shopped around. Bedding is $200 extra. My stock has a bedding block so I am passing on that.

Seems like I paid $1100 and the gunsmith ordered the barrel for that price three years ago.

:yeah:, and some actions take much more work to fit a barrel to than others.

Is recommending stainless 22" barrel.
I thought this would be an option to buying another rifle but it may not be.

Many of us on here have done that and it works well. Jesse has taken my 30-06 to 35 Whelen and my 30-30 to 356 Winchester. Both shoot very well. I've been to his shop in person multiple times, as I dropped mine off since I was in that area. Great guy.

Post by: Skillet on January 22, 2020, 09:38:19 PM: If the barrel is standard contour, might wanna check out JES for a rebore. Huge savings, looks factory. I think @angryperch had one done by them a while ago, think he was happy with it. 35 Whelen is one of their most popular rebore jobs.

The barrel is only 16 1/2" long now.
It was an experiment that is a joy to carry but not very efficient for the 30/06 class case.

They trued up the action, cut a new barrel, installed a brake, and cerakote. I think I paid 1,100 and it was fairly quick turnaround (2-3 months).

Some of the barrel companies (Shaw, Hart, etc.) will also do an install for you if you ship them your barreled action.

You'll still be over $600 for barrel+install+barrel finish going that route. More if you do more services. The Shaw barrel itself for Rem 700 in 22" sporter is around $220-$350 depending on chromoly vs. stainless and type of finish. There are cheaper barrel options like Green Mountain, etc. and there are significantly more expensive options for barrels as well (and thicker contours).

So if the $850 includes the barrel, then that price isn't out of line.

Looking like that is a pretty good deal for 800-900.
I do have two loads I have worked up for it,one hunting load and a target load that shoots like a 243.
It does not like factory loads.

Post by: fly-by on January 23, 2020, 11:24:49 AM: If you're not attached to it you may get it threaded then sell it. Someone with a suppressor should not be turned off by the 16.5 barrel. Assume you get about about $500 for it which gets you within a couple hundred of a stainless 35 Whelen.
