I currently have two and have had three. I had to have my first one put down a couple years ago. Great dogs. Probably be the only hunting breed I ever own in the future. Who are you getting yours from? Addictedtohunting on here is a breeder.

I have 2 cedarwoods dogs , one 9 and the other one a year and a half. Like Shannon I don't see myself ever having a different breed.

that's a great pic right there. I've been reading and watching everything I can find on this breed and love what I'm seeing. I live in an area with great hunting for Huns quail and pheasants, and plenty of duck waters also..im pretty excited

Congrats!!  I have a male named Doug and the breed is really pretty special.  Full-On!  and oh so sweet, he would literally jump into my pocket if he could.  He is so affectionate.  They are really something else.  You will not regret it, that's for sure.  I have a pointing lab too....started with the versatile lab that points.  Doesn't point worth a damn but he is the quintessential lab, I'd say.  A good hunter in his own right.  Hunting with a flusher and a pointer is really fun.  The PP came after when my trainer turned me on to the breed.  Her first PP was from Bodo himself.  I probably would have for-gone the lab had I got the PP first.  They are great!  There is a lot of personal preference but I did wait until i was able to get short coated one...the long haired, woolly ones do pick up the stickers and are dirt magnets....but if you are heavy into water-fowling the thick coats will certainly help with warmth.  Either way, send pictures when you have one picked out!  Very exciting!

I have never owned one but I have hunted behind a few and been around a ton of them in NAVHDA. They are an awesome breed. I think that you have made a great choice and that you will be super happy to have such a cool breed!

You had better share some puppy pics!

Do you guys train your dog yourselves

Thank you rasbo. I got mine from marshland gun dogs out of MN.  Tony Bezenar is his name and he bumped me up his list (or so he says) to expand his foot print and get some of his dogs out of the Midwest.  Doug does have a little bit of an over bite but other than that he’s exactly what I was hoping for.  Not sure how big a hurry your in but I’d vouch for Tony and spring(MarchIsh pickup) pups are awesome.

I don’t personally train them from the ground up.  That said, if I had the time to really pour into the little guy I would follow the richard wolters books.  Gun dog and/or Water Dog.  Julie knutson’s training the pointing lab is another good one.

I think having a trainer getting their hands on them when they are so young is very important for the long hall in creating a good foundation. “You are a working dog and not a cuddly couch potato”.  That said, going about it your self with live birds (a lot of them) is totally doable.  It’s easy to over think it, it really is about having a ball with them and enjoying the process.  I just didn’t have the time or the expertise at the time.

Thanks for the info there. I do have the time foresure but also my thinking is like yours introduce him to some trainer  while young

I’m glad I did it...I definitely missed out on prime puppy time but it sure does help.  They are absolute sponges from 7 weeks old to first few months of age.  A skilled trainer can really cement some good stuff in there.  I would say a min of 2 months in all honesty.

You're not going to get much if you send a puppy to a trainer (comments mention from 7 weeks to few months of age). Just sign up for some local obedience classes and focus on basic socialization. At about 6 months, after the pup has adult teeth you can think about sending it to a pro to do formal obedience, force fetch, and collar conditioning.

I got a cedarwoods pudel pointer and love him. He is so biddible picked up the whole game in 9 months and was ready for hunting before turning one. He nose is impressive. I like his range not to far and not a boot licker. About 200 yards. We hunted blues, ruffs, huns, chukar, quail, ducks and geese. It was pretty cool to see his first water retrieve with two geese. I know a good trainer that love pudel pointers and turned me on to them. Pm if interested.

Ha!  I just like people names for my pets I guess.  Todd is the charcoal lab, Doug the PP and the cat is Ruth.  Wish I had a better story for ya.  It is fun to see people’s reactions when you say “Todd, Doug, come!” though.

How do pudelppinters do on upland game?  I’m getting a lab from Rocking M this year, but in @ 18-20 months or so I may be looking for a dedicated upland dog for hunts in Idaho Montana & Wyoming.

I'd say upland game is their specialty but waterfowl is a close second. My dogs are every bit as good as my labs in the past in retrieving waterfowl. They were a little slower learning marks than labs as pups but once they are a little older there isn't a drop off. My little females can't sit in the nasty cold water breaking ice all day like my labs but my male can and does anything my labs ever did. They are a fun breed. The intensity in their work is fun to watch. All three of mine have come out of the box excelling in upland work. Prey drive is intense and they have more class than other versatile breeds. Not up there with setters or pointers for style points but pretty darn close in the good ones. Exposure to wild birds is all it really takes to get them bird crazy and pointing. It will be up to you to get them steady to wing, shot, and fall. Its a lot of fun.
You'll have fun with your pup. Enjoy the process!

I'm at the beginning stages of my first Pudelpointer.  She just turned 12 weeks and what an amazing breed!! So damn smart, sometimes too smart, and already a bird nut!  Points like crazy and is a great family dog! She is already out looking for birds and working the field like a grown dog!

Awesome pics, reminds me of mine at that age! She was so easy to train, pointing the quail wing at 8 weeks. I owned yellow Labs for 30 years, but wanted to switch to a pointing breed, due to our location and the upland bird populations where we hunt. Never looking back, best hunting dog I have ever owned, best family dog, and unlike most pointing breeds, Pudelpointers have an off switch. Hunt hard, play hard, but once inside the house, they just calm down and chill out.

Agreed! She has a decent off switch now but can still get a bit wild. Especially the last couple nights she gets a second wind about 8 even though I ran the snot out of her. I’m sure it will come with age.
