People need to think about this
Idaho:
- year around, or nearly year around wolf hunting
- trapping with foot holds and snaring allowed
- a culture of SSS
- governor that supports SSS
- game wardens that support SSS
- 30 wolf tags per person (15 trapping, 15 hunting)
- F4WM paying a "bounty" up too $1000 for each wolf turned in
- bear baiting allowed
- can run hounds on cats and bears
- very liberal seasons and take on bears, cats and wolves
Washington:
- no hunting wolves
- no trapping wolves or lions or bears or coyotes
- no culture of SSS
- a liberal governor that protects wolves and cougar hamstringing WDFW
- predator loving game wardens that shadow wolves during mod deer/elk seasons
- wolf and all predators sanctuary state
- big rewards for turning in wolf poachers
- no bear baiting allowed
- no hounds for cats, or bears
- cougar quotas that are very restricted
- very restricted spring limits on bear
how is our wildlife not screwed?
how are our livestock producers not screwed?
how are pet owners not screwed?
how are we not screwed here in WA?

Interesting. If I read the maps correctly I wonder why they didn't make a year-round season on public land in the Lolo zone (units 10 and 12).

My guess....this has more to do with livestock protection than helping elk herds :twocents:

It's another baby step in the right direction. There was already year around wolf hunting on private land in north Idaho, this is just an expansion of that. I really think the bigger news is the expansion of season on public lands from Aug 1 to June 30 on all lands in many units. You can take a wolf on a bear bait, so that means all the spring bear baiters are now wolf hunters.

When were wolf seasons? For those that know more about wolves and hunting them, is it even likely to kill many from late spring to early fall? I always heard that the only real time to hunt them with remote success is mid fall through winter.
-
I give IDFG a lot of credit for continuing to expand wolf hunting and trapping opportunity. It's going to be a continued battle, as wolves get hunted and trapped they are getting smarter and tougher to get. We have seen a big difference in wolf behavior!

Wolves come into bear baits, they aren't consistent, it's only randomly, but there will be wolves killed in May and June by bear hunters! :twocents:

Bob, I think they are working in that direction, the seasons are getting longer, but there is much more justification for year around on private land, but over time I expect to see year around pretty much statewide on all lands. The wolves are getting much smarter, year around will be needed.

Well it looks like 1 step away from going full circle and repeating history. Humans are to stupid to learn from history lessons. Poison!!! Pioson? How ya spell that? Death.

They howl quite a bit in the spring. Ill be over calling whenever i get a chance. Going early next month. Ill be calling bears and cats over there too, so lots of chance to maybe call in a wolf. Some units have bear open through july 31st, and some have cougar open aug 1st through june 30th (with no quota, 2nd cougar tag.) Lots of chances for a guy to maybe call in a wolf. Ive got 2 tags each for idaho bears, wolves, lions.

Man that sounds like fun ! Is it OTC or do you have to put in for a wolf tag. Any info would be great. I'm tierd of hunting in Washington but have never gone out of state. Each time I try to look into out of state hunting I get confused. Would love to go for any big game. I'll take any advice I can get on where to start with how and when to get tags.

People need to think about this
Idaho:
- year around wolf hunting
- viable trapping with foot holds and snaring
- a culture of SSS
- governor that supports SSS
- game wardens that support SSS
- 30 wolf tags per person (15 trapping, 15 hunting)
- foundation for wildlife management paying a "bounty" of $1000 for each wolf turned in
Washington:
- no trapping
- no hunting
- governor protects wolves from the wolf plan over cattle depredations
- no culture of SSS
- wolf loving game wardens
- wolf sanctuary state
- rewards for turning in wolf poachers
how is our wildlife not screwed?
how are our livestock producers not screwed?
how are pet owners not screwed?
how are we not screwed here in WA?
@jackelope where is that huge nucular bomb meme! Cause this post nails it!

We are screwed in Washington, no kiss, no nothing, just take it! The idiot that is sitting in the Governors seat is our number 1 enemy, until we change the minds of the people that keep voting him and the likes of him in office, we will continue to get screwed.

Well it is only closed during the month of july, so you still have an 11 month season to fill your 30 tags, which is a little bit better than what we have here.

Does that kind of hunting pressure push them to areas with less pressure, like WA for example?

I dont see that happening. Tons of rugged country over there where they wont be bothered much, and i doubt very many people are out there hunting wolves year round. A small number of dedicated hunters maybe, certainly not enough to run wolves out of the state, and theyre only going to be so effective. If i can fill one wolf tag this year ill be thrilled. Probably wont, but im going to try. And if i do get lucky and fill both my tags, ill buy more.
Id think if anything, the more wolves there are getting killed in idaho, the less we will have coming our way.

One disturbing thing in the article is that among idaho residents, 55% supported this, 45% opposed. A few more years of california refugees will likely swing public sentiment the wrong way. Theyre close to the tipping point.

Yep.

This is true, but of that 45% I'll bet most of them are from a few isolated areas. Hopefully that'll help keep their political pressure from growing too much. Also, the wolf huggers are more likely to send in comments than the wolf hunters.

Yeah, and thats a problem. Hunters need to weigh in more often so these public surveys dont end up with the anti crowd showing majority response.

One big issue being overlooked is the F4WM, with their reimbursements there will be hunters in the woods if season is open. Bango, if you don't already belong, you should send in $35 and join before you go on your Idaho hunt. In my mind, F4WM is making the most positive impact on wolves and that lessens the overall population and the number of wolves that need to come to WA for room to fit in.

:yeah:

We have noticed a sharp increase in wolf hunters and wolf trappers in Idaho the last three years, with more activity each year. Wolves are very smart and getting smarter all the time, I'm still not sure we are taking as many as are being born every year.

Been meaning to do so, did it this morning.

With 18+ years of no wolf control to speak of in WA, it seems like WA will be feeding Idaho with wolves. We know WDFW have lied on the wolf numbers since day one.
-
Already happening, WA wolves are often taken in Idaho, and thank you very much

and IDFG discarded every comment outta state which left I think around 5,000 comments

huntnphool: Thank you for the video of your hunt. That's super great.

Hello,
Join F4WM this month, can wait to go Wolf hunting, planning on trying in units 1, and 10a first. (I live in Spokane).
If anyone wants to go I'll be happy to share the woods with you. Right now I'm going to do a couple of three day hunts (more scouting) but as my wife's says if your going might as well be ready to shoot...

Wheres corona virus for wolves ???
-
Oh, theyre already infected with it, ask wolfbait.
-
Very common little pests, wolfbait's deal was real. More kinds than you can shake a stick at. The problem is a nasty one that did not stay home.
-
This was a great move. Thank you ID. My wife and I will continue to carry a tag at all times. Maybe one day we will get lucky.
A buddy and his partner called in an entire pack from over a mile away on video last year in September, and he killed one at 30 yards. I will do my best to replicate this experience in a few weeks (except they are dead inside of 800 if they stop). 😂

Have been instructed that a supressor helps a bunch if a pack is about, good luck!!!!

for right now, my go to wolf gun will be my .243. But as soon as my .223 suppressor gets out of jail, ill likely be using that for wolf / cougar hunts when bear is not open. 20" barrel ar with a can and 73 grain bullets i think should work well in the event i get lucky and call a pack in.
