Hi Guys.
I've got a bone-stock Remington 870 Express 12g. Blue Steel, 28" Barrel, wood furniture; you know the type, total Big5 special. I found it on sale for $175 years ago and haven't done anything with it since.
So now that I'm working from home, and have nothing but time, I thought I'd dress it up. I thought I'd start with an 18.5" barrel and swap out the stock for one those top folding SPAS12 type ones.
Does anyone have experience with a mod like this? Recommended brands? Ones to stay away from?
Thanks guys. I need a project. I'm starting to vacuum my floors more than once a day :o

I cut my own barrel, it’s easy to do just make sure you know what measurements to take.

Ive always been curious about that. Obviously you'd want the most precise cut you could make, but how straight does it have to be before it effects things?
-
An 18.5" barreled 870 isn't going to be an effective long range gun. I bought a metal blade and put that in my 10" miter saw to make the cut.
The important thing is to do the measurement right so you don't run sideways with the feds.

What do you plan to use it for mags. Hd shotgun or multi purpose. I don’t have an 870 but I do have a weatherby hd shotgun that has changeable chokes. One of my favorite turkey guns! If it’s a multi use gun I’d go with a barrel you can change chokes. If this is solely an hd gun do as stein recommends. Plenty of aftermarket support for the 870. Pick your furniture

JD @ AIP tactical gun slings is a great resource for anything 870.

I've always wanted to do an old Wingmaster police riot gun set up with wood stocks.

I bought this old junker from a guy on the board and added the Remington mag tube and sling.
I thought about refinishing the stock, but may just leave it as it’s an old Patrol from a local agency.

Yes! Exactly like that. Very nice.

I like the looks of that quite a bit. I like the old stuff. Maybe do the barrel and then do a flat grey stock and mlok front and a side saddle shell holder.

Kinda off topic but on topic. Since you guys are talking about cutting the barrel down yourself what length of barrel on a shotgun if you cut it off yourself is considered a sawed off shotgun

Always been curious... 18.5" from where? End of the chamber? Shoulder that the rim goes to? Could probably look this up on the Googlator, but, meh..... :chuckle:

It's 18" from a closed bolt. Most are 18.5" though.

Typical idea these days is to mark dowel at 18.5 and have your barrel that length or longer from the closed bolt.

Yeah, do your homework as people have gone to prison by measuring the wrong way. I have a 19" barrel for that reason and did plenty of research to make sure I was measuring the right thing. The alternative is to buy a barrel, but I'm guessing those might be hard to come by lately.
-
The difference between 18.5 and 20" is negligible so I don see why you should get too stupid. What does a new factory 18" barrel run these days anyway?
From my buckshot hunting coyotes I have to say that I wouldn't cut down a barrel.

Surprisingly you can still get them for $100-150 on Gunbroker now. The better option may be to simply buy the extended mag you want and then cut to that length. I think even 2-3 extra shells puts you well over 18" and I have never liked the look of a shotgun with a mag protruding beyond the muzzle.
I agree, the only use is defense, it's an interesting project if you want a shorty but your range is about 10 yards.

Magpul makes a pretty cool stock, more for looks than anything, but changes the look for sure. Actually now that I think about it, it could replace the wood stock and make the 870 more of a waterfowl gun if you were worried about the wood soaking in water after alot of exposure?

Ammo is hard to come by now and certain firearms are getting rare, but accessories and parts seem to be pretty well stocked.

I was going to do some very minor load port work, follower and tritium front sight and call it good.

How many rounds does it hold?
