I'm in the market for a good hunting sidearm and I don't see a recent thread discussing favorite sidearm choices. What's your go-to?
I'm currently between the Glock 23, Walther PPQ in .40, H&K VP40, and Sig P320 in .40. Opinions on which one of these would be the best are welcome.
-
For bears, my go-to is spray.
For two-leggers, Ruger .357.
-
Small frame 38+p revolver for me for around here, also have a s&w 329pd 44 for the trips to grizzly country. The little 38 saved my bacon once!
-
XDM 10mm 5.25 barrel.
-
Kimber Ultra carry .45 with buffalo bore hard cast lead, and spray.
-
I'm with dirty harry, 44 mag

My Walther PPS 9mm......I'm not worried about 4 legs as much as 2 often times. Super lightweight and I barely know it's there. But if you're worried about critters I would suggest a 10mm. BTW the Walther PPQ has an incredible trigger, I couldn't believe the groups I was getting with it.
-
For the last bunch of years it has been a S&W Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. I just bought a Ruger Backpacker Kodiak in .44 mag, but it is a beast to carry. I'm looking into a Ruger GP100 in 10mm.

I have one question, you feeling lucky? :chuckle:

Story time?

XDM 10mm 5.25 barrel.
Same here, it's probably overkill when I'm hunting in southern WA but I also hunt in the NE corner and up by Mt Baker, so there is always the possibility of grizzly.
-
Walther P99-AS in 40.
-
Ruger Single Seven in .327 Federal. Small, light, simple. I like large semi autos for other purposes but high capacity and fast reloads aren't really a priority for me in a woods gun.
-
Ruger SP101 4.2" .357 or Smith 69 4.25" 44 Mag.

Where did you find the .45 Buffalo bore? In a store or special order?

:chuckle: good one, right now yes, we have been self quarantining and have no woohoo here

Most of the time I carry a 1911 in .22, if not it's a 1911 in 45ACP. Both in a shoulder rig. If Turkey or other birds it's a LC9S or a SIG 320 compact.
-
SW 629 Mountain Gun, with a Galco custom side draw. Loaded with Garrett Cartridges.
-
Most of the time I am carrying my xdm 10mm now days. The few times I wonder around grizz country I pack the smith 44 still.
-
XDM 10mm with Underwood 200gr hardcast
-
For bears, my go-to is spray.
For two-leggers, Ruger .357.
I too carry bear spray for four legged threats. For my sidearm I just stick with my KelTec PF9 9mm with fmj. Someday I'll get to the other end of the spectrum and get a Ruger Alaskan in .454 in a chest holster.
-
M&P 9 compact, s&w model 60 .357 or a ruger single six .22mag. Mostly dependent on my mood.
-
A 375 Ruger, my primary weapon is usually a handgun. :chuckle:
If I'm hunting with a small caliber rifle (6.5 Grendel, 6mm BR) I carry a Super Redhawk in 480 Ruger. If I'm carrying a larger gun like a 338 or bigger I'll carry a GP-100 that I rechambered to 10mm Mag.
-
I bounce around depending on what I am hunting.
9mm SVE
Judge
Two Bond hand cannons in shoulder rig.
If Iam real worried KSG in pack scabbard.

FN FiveseveN

Nothing when hunting, too cumbersome. But I do pack a Taurus 444 TIT Ultralite .44 Mag with .305 GN HSM bear loads when going back to a kill in grizz country. Call me cautious :chuckle:
-
G20
-
Fusion Firearms 1911 6" Longslide in 10mm with RMR . Need to grab a Kenai Chest holster for it .
-
Gp100 in 357 mag
-
Taurus 44mag Ultralite.
-

Yep, me too.
-
Bearspray n ruger 380 lcp archery hunting
-
Man, with you gents in the woods I'm glad I am normally on my best behavior.
-
My rifle when modern hunting. Why pack another firearm? When archery hunting, I'll pack an LCP to keep the meth heads civil.

online, just googled it and found it 255 grain hard cast lead flat nose .45acp +p $32 a box

Had a 629 4" for a few years. Packed it as a side for blacktail hunting around the grizzly island here in SEAK, but felt it was just not any better than the weapon I had at the ready in my hands at the time. Couldn't justify the weight and hassle of putting down a rifle at the ready to unholster a sidearm. So for deer hunting now, I don't pack a sidearm, just my rifle.
For spring hiking on to the brown bear islands, I sling my Winchester 12 ga. Marine Defender over the shoulder.
I never feel undergunned. :dunno:

Depends how big I think the bears are where I’m going. Usually I’ll take a Glock 19, because I’m not really worried about bears. If I am, I take Glock 21 in either .45 or I swap the barrel and mags and take 10mm. Might be swapping the G19 out for the M&P 45C soon.
-
If I dont care about concealing, my glock 20 is with me. I feel it has the capacity and power to deal with anything I need to deal with in the lower 48, and I can shoot it extremely accurately and fast.
-
Ruger Alaskan revolver in 454 casull on a chest holster for my dream hunting trip to Alaska.
S&W M66 revolver is my usual woods gun. It is my most accurate sidearm. -253shotgunner
-
G20 & chest holster
For something that won't break the bank and has a good amount of firepower the G20 or maybe even it's longer brother the G40 would be as good a choice as any and that's coming from someone that really isn't even a Glock guy.
Something in 460 Rowland would be nice too.
-
During archery season I carry either a XDM 10mm or S&W 340 357 airlite.

One thing to think about with the bear spray is, one normally hunts into the wind. So when you spook that resting bear. That spray will becoming right back at you! We do hand it out to those that hunt our land but I personally would not want to depend on it without proper back up. When you do buy Bear spray always buy a extra can to practice with so you know how to use it and how it sprays out.
For those hunting up in N.C. Montana if you stop in at the Blackfoot Fish and Wildlife Office in Browning they sell it there for $5.00 a can.

Pmr 30 its lite, holds lots of rounds, and even I can hit with it.

Yeah right there with you. It's the only thing that worked for me after a number of different attempts.

And with the practice can make sure you inhale a bit of it yourself. Its nasty stuff and you need to know how bad it is and how it feels in case you do get blowback in an actual attack. You dont want to be rolling around on the ground like a baby when it gets in your eyes with mr bear coming after you. It hurts like hell but you will survive it.

Dan Wesson 944, 44 Rem Mag .... 4 inch tube, with HSM 305gr "Bear Loads" plus 2 speed loaders..... Heavy? Yes.... To heavy for you then stay in the truck. 😉
-
Can of pepper spray for humans because they will fall to the ground and cry like babies when sprayed. Hardcast bullets in a 10mm, 45acp or 44 magnum as they can kill deer/elk and provide protection against bears/cougars that are really attacking you.
Spray makes people feel good against bears because most attacks are "false charges".
Ammoland has an article on the effectiveness of handguns against bears. They looked for every verifiable attack and caliber used. 73 cases in total and a 96% success rate. Good read.
-
depends on the species being hunted
Small game/4 legged predators Ruger single six in 17/HMR 2 legged Springfield XD 45ACP
Larger game S & W 686 in 357 Mag
Bears Ruger Black hawk 45LC

If I'm rifle hunting, I don't carry a handgun. As my rifles are all more powerful than any handgun.
If I'm archery or muzzleloader hunting, I carry a S&W Performance Center Model 627 in a Diamond D chest holster with 180gr hardcast bullets in the 8 round moonclip and a backup moonclip on the chest holster holder. That gun is so much fun to shoot. Granted, I don't archery or muzzy hunt in griz country....I'd only ever rifle hunt in griz country and all my rifles are plenty powerful for griz so my choice of handgun was for lower 48 hunting. If I were to archery in griz country, I'd have at least a 44Mag for handgun.

If anyone needs help with training, look me up, I'll spray you all in the name of safety! (and youtube it for you, so you can critique your response and take notes)

Glock 36 chambered in .45
I love this pistol because it's light weight and so accurate. I shoot 180 grain Grizzly ammo rated at 1200 fps.
-
4” Ruger Redhawk .45 colt with 325gr HSM bear loads, currently use a man gear Alaska chest holster. I’d really like a diamond d belt holster for hunting, I use this mainly while hiking/fishing
-
Browning buckmark for grouse, or no sidearm while hunting. Why bother with the weight when I have a .308 or a lever gun in my hands anyway? I’m no quickdraw artist. I can get a shouldered rifle into action and on target far faster than I can get a holstered handgun out. I’d carry two glock 19’s but I haven’t practiced shooting sideways while jumping in awhile. 😆. I do carry a 10mm when hiking with the kids.
-
:yeah: I should’ve added that I bought mine for a backup while muzzy hunting, after my cousin shot a cougar in one of the areas I pack a smoke pole around in.
I don’t feel much need to pack a handgun while hunting modern, even my smallest deer rifle(a .250 savage) would pack a pretty nasty punch on an aggressive cat at close range, wouldn’t be afraid to use it on a black bear if I had to, either.

All fine choices. I like Glocks for the third party market though.
I carry a compact 40 with xtreme penetrator a lot of the time unless I am bear hunting. Even the Glock 23 size is too bulky for me with the side holster. Just not my thing, I prefer to go light.
-
Bear hunting is a 454 casull in a chest holster. While bow hunting it is most always a ruger lcr in 357 mag on my hip. Just in the woods for a hike....well it can be just about anything.
-
My current carry is an XDM 10mm with Underwood Hardcast in an Exo-Ivory Holster right on my pack belt. I've also carried a Ruger Redhawk .44 mag and an XD .45 Tactical for many years. Living in the NE corner I never go out without a handgun. Even the rare times that I'm rifle hunting I still pack a pistol. Good luck bringing your rifle to "bear" when a Grizzly barrels out of the brush and bowls you over in the dark. I made as much concession to reducing carrying weight, by replacing the .44 with the XD's, as I'm comfortable with. I also shoot them better, and much faster. Spray is a joke in many of the real life scenarios I've seen predators in. :twocents:

The .357 I carry is the LCR as well. That thing is a barking Chihuahua to shoot with hot loads, but man it's easy to carry. I have switched to carrying that in town most often as well as I can carry it on the side, appendix, pocket or ankle.

It definitely depends on where you go.
I wouldn't do the NE corner or Idaho without packing heavy.
In some areas of the west side I would prefer a high cap since you are more likely to run into a creep.
