Washington state parks and wildlife areas to close following governor's order
OLYMPIA – Today, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (Parks) and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced the temporary closure of all state-managed parks, wildlife areas, and water access areas for at least two weeks starting Wednesday, March 25. The closure is in response to Gov. Inslee's "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" order issued yesterday.
Entrance gates and facilities will be closed, and on-site public services will be suspended. Essential staff will be present to preserve and protect resources.
Camping and other overnight accommodations on state-managed recreation lands will remain closed through April 30.
The public can find the latest information about State Parks and WDFW operations at:
Parks: parks.state.wa.us/COVID19.
WDFW: wdfw.wa.gov/about/covid-19-updates
State land officials and staff appreciate the public's understanding and cooperation in this unprecedented time.
-
Government over reach at its finest!
They are gonna have one hell of a time enforcing that b.s.!
-
This is going way too far. Evil politics!
-
So No camping on State land Until April 30th or Just state parks???

All state land. That order came out last week.

No camping on state land, but can you still enter state land to recreate, as long as you are not camping?

No access at all for WDFW and State Park lands for the next two weeks.
No camping on WDFW, DNR and State Park lands until April 30.

So how and when did the government ever get the idea that they own the land and hold authority over it?
-
🤔

So how and when did the government ever get the idea that they own the land and hold authority over it?
Good luck with that argument in court. Case law at all levels says agencies can regulate access to public lands.

You mean the agencies who get every nickel from our tax dollars? The ones who are supposed to work for us?

Sad day when camping on state land is not allowed because of crowding.
And it's not even hunting season yet...

That word "allowed" is really starting to get under my skin.

Kind of feels like allot of these closures are focusing on one group of people..all costal boat launches are now closed as well. So I can't fish, hunt, camp,.....
Meanwhile Starbucks, Costco, pot shops, fast food joints ...the list goes on, remain open. :dunno:
-
This is what happens when everyone at every agency feels like they “have to” do something. Families need a place to go camping and recreate especially at times like these. This BS is going a little to far, the woods are a sanctuary and dispersed camping on state lands sounds like a good spot to social distance to me :dunno: “essential staff will be present to preserve and protect resources” WTF does that mean
-
“essential staff will be present to preserve and protect resources” WTF does that mean
It means State Parks and WDFW Officers will be out enforcing the closure

nailed it right there! Complete bs! My daughter and I WILL be hunting turkeys next weekend. I'd fight the argument that that's where I get my groceries. A lot safer then walking around wal mart next to a bunch of people!
-
Ill still be out looking for whatever public land “looks open”. I usually drive up nat forest roads anyway. If it’s gated ill find another road. Ill risk a ticket. Cant fathom why i can go to fred meyer but not thousands of acres of forest. 🙄

Ya, I understand costal town's not wanting a bunch of city folk in their safe zone, I just don't get the reasoning that outdoor recreation is now identified as worse than packing a few hundred people in every Costco across the region, most of whom have no dire reason to be shopping other than looking for TP...

That’s what I thought. Not exactly preserving or protecting any resource.

:yeah:
Govenor asked people to stay home and it didnt work so now they are taking further steps to make sure people adhere to the "shelter in place". I dont agree with it but also dont think it was done to stiff outdoorsman on purpose

Yeah that is ridiculous I can go get a cheeseburger but I can’t hit the DNR property right up from my house. I’m glad we own a piece of recreational property that borders forest service So at least I can still pull the trailer up there and still access it. there sure won’t be any Rangers on the roadless downhill side that boarders our piece

I think Andy Stumpf said it "If hospitals are taking this serious, then I am taking this serious." Look at Italy. Me I am staying home right now.
Turkeys? it is only a bird. There will be more and more opportunities. I got my 16 year old granddaughter set up on the deferred program to go hunting. (Also, had her set up for hunter safety, but it was cancelled.) It is possible to inadvertently get this virus. Now that I have made it by retiring from two jobs I do not want to risk my health. Besides I have 24 pts for Big Horn and over 21 for moose. I didn't get this far just to take the big dirt nap. We will wait and see on the hunting.

I think most get the seriousness. But isn't it kind of counter-intuitive when several hundred people are packed into every Costco in the state in the name of "essential"?

So glad I have less then a month left in this state that I once loved, but Comrad Insley has destroyed.
I also have two of some of the last lake front lots inside of Moses Lake. We are seriously considering selling those so we never have to come back to this state.
-
No one seems to get the stay home part
Everybody wants to do their own thing
For cripes sake
You could infect and kill someone or yourself
Stay home means stay home

Yep, you are right, but I won't do it. I do not have a problem with others going, but I won't, not yet. I will not stand in a line to get into Costco (not yet), but even before this virus I would not stand in a line outside The Outback, Olive Garden or Red Lobster. Good Hunting.
-
If the list of essentials was 3 things like food, injured, or health care or emergency worker then the other limitations for outside activities might be an easier sell.

As of right now DNR land is open for use, other than camping.

The trails up the Mountain Loop Hwy were horrendously packed this past weekend. Hundreds of cars at the Lake 22 and Heather Lake trail heads lining the hwy shoulder. I imagine it will be the same or worse this weekend if it is nice out since most the trails up there are on NF land. The folks up there are none to happy about it either. Unless NF is also closed down but haven't seen anything on that.

A side note, some folks that wanted hunting season shut down in this state to "help" the herds may be getting there wish. Not me, I liked the wild ID/every other year scenario.....Yep, stay home folks, the more people that follow the rules and stay vigilant the faster we can get through this, on the other hand, the more so called "bulletproof" people we have wandering around with the "won't happen to me" attitudes, well then, this may go on for a whole lot longer unfortunately... :twocents:
-
I had plans also
Ready for fishing
Shed horns
Turkeys
My pard has cancer and compromised immune system
My grand kids are young
My mom is in her late 80s
Do I want to risk giving it to them inadvertently?
No frickin way
-
If I get to work through every minute of this crap as "essential", then I sure as hell should be able to get in MY truck, tow MY boat to a damn near empty lake and fish alone all day 150+ yards from anyone! Stay at home is for the cities stacked on top of each other that can't go five minutes without bumping into someone. I don't have a neighbor within an acre of me. Enforce the 'lack of common sense order' on the citiots that need it!
-
Hence the problem
Hurray for me and go screw yourself to the rest

ALL WDFW WATER ACCESS SITE AS WELL!!
That means EVERY public boat launch in this stupid State!
Are Idaho lands still open?? I'll go there for two weeks! *censored*s!
No it does not. There are launches owned by cities, counties, private entities, etc.
-
That's why I said public.
Privately owned launches are the only ones not affected by 'Inslee' closure order.
WDFW is getting shredded on Facebook! Great entertainment right now :chuckle:
-

And that's why I said city, county, etc. Those are public as well.

I bet fewer than 10% of access is WDFW or state, maybe less than 5%. For me, I launch at probably 10 different sites a year and I can only think of one that is state owned.
-
Do share..
-
Do share..
Seriously buddy?
Many of the most popular boat launches on Puget Sound are not state owned, such as Armeni in West Seattle owned by the City of Seattle, Everett owned by the Port of Everett. On Lake WA only one of the boat launches is WDFW (Kenmore), Gene Coulon is City of Renton, Atlantic City is City of Seattle.
If you actually pay to launch at the launch via a fee envelope or a pay machine it's not WDFW.
-
Does this mean the wdfw lake access is also closed to even those stocking fish? Will fish stocking continue if the ramps are closed?

I don't fish salt buddy...
If it's a city or county park, according to the governor, it's closed as they are deemed public gathering areas.

I think it's far more than that but probably less than 50%, just depends on where you are in the state.
I think most people quite simply just don't know the difference between a WDFW launch and a non-WDFW launch. Good example is pull up to a non-state owned launch and see how many WDFW/Discover Pass passes are being displayed even though they are not applicable off state lands. :twocents:

Lake WA isn't salt.
It's up to each city or county to close their lands. Some are, some aren't. He banned "gatherings" not "gathering areas."
-
Of all the hardships mankind has faced in history, I think spending off days on the couch instead of fishing for a few weeks ranks pretty low.

City of Everett, City of Mukilteo, Kayak Point, Lake Goodwin, Wyatt Park, Flowing Lake, Fish Lake, Lake Chelan, Lake Cavanaugh, Ilwaco, Chinook, Hammond, Warrenton, Skipanon, Edmonds, Longview, Kalama, I could probably list another dozen I use depending on the year. Then there are the foot or car access sites which are literally countless.
The one state launch I use is Ft. Casey.
If I want to fish, there are plenty of options.

Nowhere in the Governor's order did he direct local parks or gathering areas to be closed. It is up to each land managing agency to determine to stay open or close.
In fact here is the Governor's order:

Every single alternate launch or park I have looked up is falling in line. I couldn't contact Mardon but all the locations around me are shutting down public access and it just keeps growing...
It's posted on their individual websites. I plan on calling directly tomorrow but there probably won't be anyone around to answer phones.

Why the complexity?
Either the public owns it or not, whoever controls it, WDFW, City State, corp of engineers,BLM, national forest sevice....Jesus, its our land!
Why do we have to play this agency bullcrap?

For Lake WA, you could choose one of these:

Not how it works. Should your city tax dollars go to pay for a boat launch in Maine? Should your county tax dollars go to fund a park in Florida?

In consultation with other Snohomish County leaders, Executive Dave Somers today announced the restriction of public access to select county facilities, primarily those in the Administration Buildings on the county campus, starting Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 8:00 a.m.These county facilities will be closed to the public until further notice, with limited exceptions.
Unless there is a new press release I don't see how any county boat launches are impacted.

Very true. Now tell that to the hundreds of people packing out every Costco, those lining up for the weed store, hitting the liquor store, bombing through the door at the convenience store for smokes, or engaging in other "safe" state sanctioned activities.

There's been a couple National Parks closing due to high visitation, including Mount Rainier. The Secretary of the Interior has given his regional directors the authority to close areas across the country. Some wildlife refuges have closed to public use, but for the most of the country they are open outside of visitor centers, offices, etc. Same goes for the Forest Service, expect to remain open.

No doubt its insane that liquor and weed have been deemed essential.

Fixed it for you! The funny part is that the lack of fishing around here had nothing to do with Coronavirus, we are about to get the great news from the salmon setting meetings that are probably now closed to the public. That should make the job much easier.

And MT charged me 18.00 extra (non res) to fight evasive species even though I did not fish. Just to tell the whole story.
What, say it ain't so! I haven't fished in November out there, but it was always a pipedream.

So every single one of us upright talking monkeys is carrying this disease now and spreading in to every other living creature? You would see people's pets dropping like flies!!
A grand total of zero pets have contracted Covid 19. The dog that tested possible was said that it most likely just had some of the virus "on" it from it's infected owner.

:dunno: animals don't always react in the same way we humans do.there is no proof either way at this time just like the drug they think might work on this might cause the virus to do something else maybe mutate who knows that's why they have to test and wait.
if the curve does not flatten out because people are not heading this then other measures will be taken,we will blame them and maybe even cause trouble and place blame on them for it.if we do the 2 weeks and the curve flattens out then things get better we will have a season,if not because people wont listen then this could extend out and continue to extend out.
2 WEEKS IS MUCH BETTER THAN A FEW MONTHS IN MY OPINION,HOW ABOUT ALL OF YOU?We need our country back to work,If our country can't get back to work in a timely fashion it will be the fault of all the people of this country everywhere that just couldn't take a 2 week break from everything 1 time in their life.
SELFISH :twocents:

Exactly! One 17yo pomeranian in Wuhan! I highly doubt it's transmittable to the frigging wildlife...especially fish.

I'm not sure why you folks care about boat ramps being open or not, it doesn't matter because according to the order these are the only 4 reasons you can leave your house...
Under Inslee’s order issued Monday evening, Washingtonians can leave their homes for only four “essential services”:
To obtain necessary supplies like food and medication
To exercise. You can go outside for activity but be conscientious by staying six feet apart from others.
To care for a loved one or take them to get medication, medical help or groceries.
To seek medical and behavioral help for you, family members or animals.
Fishing, shed hunting, spring bear hunting, camping, bird watching, boating, etc are not on that list...

"To obtain necessary supplies like food". I own a boat. Own all my fishing supplies. I can travel, launch and fish using 4 gallons of gas. Fishing twice a week I can go a month without even refueling. One trip with my wife provides 20 kokanee for $12. I would come into contact with zero people. Safest, cheapest way I can feed my family right now.
-
Good point. Fishing is "obtaining food." 👍
I don't see what could possibly be considered unsafe by doing so, since you're not coming into contact with any other people. Common sense!
But it's fine to go to Walmart. 🙄
-
When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
I will defend the governor to a certain degree, he's got his hands full and I don't blame him for spending less than 1 second thinking about fishing.
WDFW on the other hand should have ample time to think through some solid regulations and guidance.

Another thing Andy Stumpf said "It should be about WE, not about ME". Again, "if hospitals are taking it seriously, so am I".
-
I tried to explain to my 11 year old tonight at the dinner table that if 1000 people decide to go fishing or hunting the odds are someone is going to get into a wreck. Someone may end up having to go to the hospital. If that person puts additional burden on the ER right now or worse yet, if that person is coronavirus + then you've added to the problem thinking that "I was only going to go fishing, how could this be a problem".
Or, you decide to get your youth turkey and by luck you happen to get one in the first 30 minutes. The next thing you're going to want to do is go get another tag at Walmart. And while you're there you probably stop at the minimart get pick up a diet coke. There are reasonable odds that someone "just going fishing" or hiking, or shed hunting is going to result in contact with others.
Should the pot shops be shut down? Hell yea. I didn't want them in the first place.

Inslee specifically states people can recreate and specifically states 'walking' and "going for bike rides" correct?! What in the heck do you think places like the Centennial Trail, Sammamish River Trail and Burk Gilman Trail are going to look like the next 14 days??!
Why keep those recreational options open but close access to launch areas where there would be arguably FAR fewer people and the people there would be much farther spaced out? That's my issue. I don't want to go walk or bike on a trail with potentially hundreds if not thousands of people whizzing by breathing heavily. It just doesn't make sense.
I am in 'walking' distance of two lakes but once I get there the access is now closed, why? I would rather go to a lake with fewer people around and CATCH food vs. a grocery store full of people and buy food and run a massively higher risk of potentially catching C19! Makes zero frigging sense to me.
Just be specific, be consistent, apply common sense, shut absolutely EVERYTHING down for two weeks and roll in the National Guard to help enforce it or what are we doing? Picking and choosing what recreational opportunities will be 'allowed' knowing full well biking, hiking and walking will congregate massive crowds is just pissing in the wind. :twocents:

We live 1.5 blocks from the Centennial Trail in a section that isn't very used. I had to stop going for rucks there, I couldn't keep away from people. On a normal day, I would never run across a soul except the summer months. I used to ruck daily and could go a month or two without seeing a person.
There are other places to exercise, I agree it's important, particularly for a longer period of time that this will end up lasting. I can still get out by myself and worst case I can do burpees in my basement.
I do wish they would focus on the goal, not a list of random stuff that is allowed and not allowed that may or may not help. If you listen to the gov't, grocery stores are safe, walking your dog is safe, exercise is safe. If you are running into people, it isn't safe no matter what you are doing.

Thank you for answering but your answer only goes to show the utter bull crap this is. Why oh why do we the public have to keep track of 4 different agencies? Its all public land.
DOES THE VIRUS CARE IF I'M ON CORP OF ENGINEERS LAND OR WDFW LAND?
And for those who say that I should be in my house anyways....please, give me a break. I sincerely doubt I or anyone else is being put in grave danger of death out in the open air at a boat launch. Just use common sense for gosh sake.

Leave the *censored* parks and access points open! All these wet brains are doing is concentrating more people in fewer areas! Everybody is spending more time out walking, shooting, hiking, bike riding, fishing etc than normal right now and these dip *censored*s are only pissing off the masses and congregating bigger crowds at “open” public access points. Get out of the way! Less is more sometimes. When is the last time one of you was within 6’ of someone in another party at a crowded boat launch? When does camping in the woods put you in close contact with other people besides your group? IMHO this is just some agencies that feel like they should do something, doing something :puke:

It's all public land but each of those agencies has a different purpose. Army Corps of course is for the dams, BOR is for irrigation, USFWS is for the protection of wildlife on a national level, and we all know what WDFW is.
We can't just have one public land agency whose rules apply for all lands everywhere, if that were to happen would the same rules that apply in the former Colockum Wildlife Area apply at the former Mt. Rainier National Park? Could you hunt in the former park, could you hunt in the former wildlife area? That's why nobody wants WDFW, DNR, and Parks to merge.
We live in the 21st century, if you don't know if an area is open, google it, it takes five seconds to get the answer.

I think if you are in walking distance then you are good to go. Float tube walk in solo and it’s completely within the both the spirit of reducing exposure as well as any actual official restrictions. I think.

Governor Inslee tried to keep areas open and asked people to limit exposure. Instead people flocked to beaches like Alki, golden gardens and ocean shores, trail heads like poo poo point and rattle snake ridge, golf courses and basket ball courts. I was driving by a lake the other day and people were shoulder to shoulder fishing all along the dock. This isn’t time for recreation and vacations, it was intended to be a time of isolation and limited exposure. People didn’t heed the warning and we got a mandatory “stay at home” order instead.
Are people really that selfish that they can’t give up their “normal” for a few weeks for the better good of all? America is really in sad shape, people are dying at an alarming rate of a very contagious virus and all some are worried about is me me me.

Hah, No struggle at all. I made a decision. Just a simple vulnerability risk assessment based on current physical events. Your assessment may be different than my based on what you are willing to risk. This is just a difference of opinion. I made my choice and you made yours.
What MOPP(mission oriented protective posture) level are those health care workers operating at?
Far be it for me to tell anyone what to do or how to do it, assess and please by all means make your own decision.
I have the freedom to choose to do whatever I want, I do not have to obey any laws or recommendations, I know the risks. If it was a temporary trapping, hunting or fishing law would I blow it off? What if “they” called it trespassing? I could just pay the fine and carry on and not sweat it, some people operate like that and don’t bat an eye. But, would I risk it? How would I explain it to my Son, to my Grandson?

I dont think you will catch it a boat launch but that is not the point. The point is people didnt stay at home on their own so now the government is closing down everything they have control over to force people to stay home.

Like some have said and I 100% agree, we are all in this together, young or old, it doesn't matter, more young people are getting it(my wifes friend has a 19 year old hockey playing son in otherwise excellent health that is in ICU in Michigan with this crap)and the faster the younger generation figures out they arnt bulletproof or if they don't show symptoms they can still "crop dust" the dang virus all over, the faster we can get through this and get back to some sort of normalcy. The more that people continue to buck the system, the rules or precautions put forth the longer this crap is going to linger and flare up. As far as those of us that hunt, fish and recreate outdoors, well they are going to shut us down also, we need everyone to follow the guidelines or we won't be doing any hunting this year either. As a human being I am doing everything asked and everything I can to help the population and my community get through this as fast as possible so in the bigger picture, me as a sportsman can also get back to doing what I enjoy. Like I said, the more people that take this seriously, contribute to its demise and not to the possibility of spreading it, the faster we ALL get back to doing what we enjoy..... :twocents:
