Just wanted to know what people thought about this unit, i hunt their and maybe can swap info
-
Have heard that its packed with guys, especially by the crest, especially muzzleloader season.

I shot a nice 5x4 there second day of general rifle 2005, 50 feet off the highway. There are lots of hunters, but there are also quite a few elk. Best way to do it is find well used game trails that lead from the fields, and just sit it out. I'll try to load a pic of my bull if i can figure it out

nice lookin bull!

Nice shot placement. I've hunted there, but my buddy did all the hard work scouting, so that's all I'm saying.

I've hunted the South Rainer unit for more than 20 years, off and on with rifle. The number of elk has gone down drastically! Too much poaching in the hard winter years. If you don't believe me check out the harvest reports for the last 3 years. 2005-43 bulls.2006-16 bulls,2007-10 bulls. I did not hunt it last year 08. But from my group of 10 or more guys 0 in the last 3 years. I'm scouting somewhere Else to hunt. It's sad.

I got him the east side of Packwood between the river and hwy 12. had him loaded and was back to yakima before the seahawks game started

Yah I hunted the crest area this with muzzleloader and it was a zoo. It seemed like most people just stuck to the trail though...
-
