How about ONE Goat permit for Naches Pass!?!?!? BS  :bash:

2009 Mountain Goat Season Changes:
The Department recently completed a mountain goat research project throughout the Cascade Mountain range. We now have a better understanding about the
size and location of mountain goat populations, intermixing between sub-populations, and sustainable harvest levels for each. We are now applying that new
information to our mountain goat harvest strategies by managing hunted mountain goat populations as a collection of smaller sub-populations, where nanny groups
may be fairly distinct, but billies have a greater potential to intermix. Ideally, harvest will be well distributed throughout a population, so no sub-populations are over
harvested. As a precautionary step, the Director may open or close specific sub-populations, or reduce permit levels slightly, to protect from over harvest. Also,
selected hunters will now receive a map of their hunt area boundary with their permit.

I believe that the deal was that they would be released online early, but you would have to wait another month or so before they put them out in stores.

Title: Re: 2009 Hunting Season Regulations
Post by: billythekidrock on April 10, 2009, 04:23:59 PM
i thought this was pretty cool....

If the number of permits available in a hunt
category is less than the maximum group size, then
the maximum group size is equal to the number of
permits.
The maximum group sizes for each species
category are as follows:
Last year it was 4....
i guess i gotta get 4 more buddies to go in on a group.

8 Deer
8 Elk

Read again. Last year deer and elk max was 12. They went down 4.

WOW it could have already been mentioned but has anyone seen the NEW rifle tag for Nov. 1-20 in the Sinlahekin C GMU 215, any deer!!! That tag is gold, there are some HUGE mule deer in that area, they are only giving out 5 I think it said. I would say the chances of getting it are about as good as winning the lottery  :chuckle:

did anyone else notice they raised the grouse limit by one and they are gonna start limiting shot size for turkeys starting in the fall? just thought that was kinda odd.

Figures, I saw less grouse last year than I have in the last 15 years. I understand the turkey shot size. I ran into a guy around Northport Using buckshot and taking 80 yard shots.

Bone's how did you submit those pics to be picked?

Figures, I saw less grouse last year than I have in the last 15 years.

It was different for me. The last couple years I have seen more grouse then I have in many years. Mostly on the coast, but also the South I5 corridor.

I overheard a F&W employee state to a commission member that raising the limit to 4 would not hurt the population. :dunno:

Don't take me wrong, I don't think it will hurt the population. I don't think the population is on the lower end in the Republic area because of hunting. We have had some really wet springs and some extreme cold spells in the last five years. We didn't go above freezing this winter I would say from the end of December to the beginning of March. I just thought it was kind of funny because in the past I use to limit quickly, last year I didn't limit once. But I'm 100% talking about hunting in the NE corner. My buddy hunted around St. Helens this last year and said they where everywhere  :dunno:

Does anyone understand specifically what the new mountain goat regulations are saying?

"As a precautionary step, the Director may open or close specific sub-populations, or reduce permit levels slightly, to protect from over harvest. Also, selected hunters will now receive a map of their hunt area boundary with their permit."

I guess I'm confused on what areas hunters that are drawn will be allowed to hunt.  Are they planning on just assigning sub-populations to selected hunters, or will they be able to hunt the whole area they get drawn for.  I also wish they would give us the maps of the huntable areas so that we know specifically what we are applying for.

I still don't get the whole cut the modern season down a week on the west -side mentality, who gives a crap if the season open's, or closes on a weekend, make it three weeks every year and leave it at that. Not a big deal to me as far as hunting time, I usually tag out in the first week, or not at all, so an extra week doesn't mean a lot to me, I just see no logic in the season setting and if people want to hunt more days, they should have the option, based on logic, not a calendar.

just another way to look at it, cutting the season shorter might increase the number of hunters in the woods during the season because they cant wait until the last weekend and instead have to go on opening weekend.

also, people might not be able to get work off for opening weekend and have to wait until later and now they wont get to go hunting.

just 2 different effects that could have on the westside this year.
