Title: AR lowers, school me.
Post by: bassquatch on April 08, 2020, 08:09:42 PM
What's a good brand, kit, etc? Contemplating a build but I've always just bought, shot and sold Colts. Except for one Olympic Arms that was a colossal pos!

There are a lot of good brands,
Locally Rainier Arms and Aero are pretty much the leaders in the industry..

I have bought and sold and built lots. 2 things that are very nice to have is a closed trigger guard and a screw in bolt catch. Takes 2 of the bigger issues that a lot of the first time builders I sell to have. 1 breaking ears on the guard hammering the roll pin in. 2 scratching and marring the receiver trying to press in or pound in the both catch roll pin.

Just about finished up with my first build, ill be shooting tomorrow.  Getting that damn pin in the gas block was the biggest pain for me.

Sweet!!!

Oh yeah on the upper that is the biggest pain for sure. Lots of companies have so many variables. I bought a drill set just for them and run the bit through the hole and true up every one I build. Also a roll pin punch that has a inlet on one side for starting and a dimple on the other to finish seating it really makes life easier if a guy is doing a bunch of them.

Good looking AR.  What barrel did you go with?

20" faxon flame fluted match, 8 twist.  Put a 2 stage geiselle trigger in it too.  Hopin it shoots good.

This is my AR 10 with a Aero lower.  I have a .223 in a rifle and pistol plus a 300 black out all with Anderson Arms lowers.  The only problem I had with the Anderson lowers is a bad trigger on my first one. They replaced it for free.  Haven't shot the 10 yet.  Waiting.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200409/5118cbdb4119e28f4924540bcfff22ac.jpg)

Nice ARs.  I just finished another lower, yesterday, my first with Aero.  I was impressed with fit and finish and couldn't really note any negatives over other forged lower "brands."

Aero stripped lower, complete upper w/20" stainless fluted barrel.  Need some glass, then it's time for coyotes. :IBCOOL:

Well, my first build went well insofar as everything is operating smoothly.  Need to mount a scope now and see how well it shoots.  First i had the heavier duty buffer spring that came with my .450bm upper in there, but the best i could get out of adjusting the gas block was for it to eject brass but not chamber the next round.  Put my standard buffer spring in and everythings operating slick as snot.  So the upper, lower, handguard and bcg are all aero precision.  I think the buffer and spring are also, i dont recall for certain.  The handguard is real nice and lightweight, but just barely clears the lowpro gas block.

I know i bought the handguard straight from aero.  And i think also the gas tube and lower parts kit.  But the stripped lower i believe i ordered from brownells, and the stripped upper i dont recall who i ordered from.  I was out on the boat for 5 weeks and just started ordering all kinds of crap from a bunch of different places, reading how-to stuff the whole time to figure out what all parts and tools i would need.  This was really just a major impulse project.

Let me know next time I have a few places that you can get aero stuff for cheaper than buying from aero . Some company buy so much aero stuff they get discounts and pass it on to the customers. But again sweet look in build .There is something about building yourself that just feels good.

I will only use Aero M4E1 Enhanced ( Upper / Lowers ) from now on . The built in trigger guard and set screws instead of roll pins is worth it

Is that like a 35" barrel?  :chuckle:

Same here!  All lowers are not created equal.

20"   funny how thats middle of the road at best on a bolt gun, but suddenly outrageous for an ar.  Just wait until i get my can, itll look really long then.
