So flippin tired of all the Covid threads so I figured I'd try and get people to shut up and do a bit of reading and remember why we are all on this site instead of just talking at each other :chuckle: there have been so many incredible hunts but also some incredible threads showing the best that humanity has to offer. The rally around Aaron's family. Keegans cancer battle, and the list just keeps going.
Few of my favorites are of course Coach's hunt for Big Nasty. The symbolism of that hunt was never really portrayed into words but anyone who was on huntwa at the time knew and fully felt the power of it all. The loss of Colockumelk was so fresh for all of us. That was TRULY huntwa's hunt!
https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,133151.0.html
Another favorite of mine was Jackalopes mountain goat hunt. I think we all love when deserving people draw dream tags. Josh has given all of us so much of his time and energy and has been spat on for his efforts so many times. Josh will be the first to tell you that he isn't some crazy hardcore backpacker but he approached his hunt with purpose and reverence. He worked hard and in turn took a fantastic goat!
https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,214563.0.html
Another that comes to mind is Gringo's sheep hunt and Shawn Ryan's elk hunt but I'm having issues finding links.
Please share some links to your favorites so all these non essentials can do some reading and we can all take a stroll down memory lane.
Make Huntwa Great again!
-
I might need some help with a link....
@Buckmark . ....the bee/wasp/hornet removal thread....
-
D-Mans Bobcat thread was pretty good. Not much of a story but entertaining.
-
I’m not sure how to respond to that nonsense, Karl. I’m a super hardcore backpack hunter. Not sure where you got your info from.
Thanks by the way. Super nice of you to say all those things. I love the community here and am happy and proud of the things we have done together. The Aaron thing was a no brainer. I think that above anything else stands out for me. Next would be the Josh FROG stuff we did early on with Robodad. There were a lot of hunt threads too, but damn we can come together as a community when the chips are down. Maybe we should do some auctions to raise money to fight the ‘rona next. I bet Hunt WA could kick the ‘rona’s ass directly.
-
Great idea, the threads you have mentioned were some great ones!
:yeah:
Think there was a bobcat thread somewhere... I never saw it but was mentioned often
-
How about Hershey and her moose thread. Excellent read.

First one I thought of.
Second one that comes to mind...bigfoot. 8)
>:(
-
Plat had some good ones, he could sure drag them out.
-
Think this could be a few categories,
There were great threads based on content and story telling, and then there are train wreck threads, mostly just amusing in a weird way.
-
I won't call it a good one but the "Bullwinkle" thread bears mentioning.
-

mentioning train wreck threads would miss the mark and intent of this thread :twocents:
-
I thought Hirshey’s Moose story was excellent. Actually any story she writes is easy to read and entertaining.
-
some excellent mentions, some I would mention in addition would be DBHAWTHORNE's quests, really enjoyed riding along with him from trail camera to success.

Post links if you can.

Anything by Cryder :chuckle: :chuckle:
What happened to him? Radio silence for a while.
-
Cryder needs his own forum section where he can post so they can be found easier. He is a true huntwa treasure!
-
Dive down the search hole and come up with some links. I'd very much like to see some of these old gems found and archived in a spot where people can find them easier. There is getting to be so much content on here it is hard to find things.
-
Heres a good one https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,233479.0.html (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,233479.0.html)
Also the blacktail hunt skagitsteel posted with the pack goats is a good one too

The flashlight taped to the bow story/pics and
The dude on camera with the chain naked on a river somewhere I think
-
Both trainwrecks and yes good ones. I still have the pic and yes I do send it to friends to remind them that I'm a bit off in my humor.

Long ways down 'cougar creek' since this story, but I still remember it like yesterday...
Surprising how many of those commented on it who aren't around much (or at all) anymore.

Lots of great threads being brought up, agree that anything Hershey writes up is always good! The thread and auction we had for Aaron’s family and the lady that had no toys for her kids a couple Christmas's ago are my favorites. And anything by Shanevg

After showing us pics of that massive bruin, then he left us hanging on Day three to celebrate with the wife and said
"Sorry fellas I've been away from the family for almost two weeks so out having a celebratory beer with the wife. I promise to cap this story off in the morning. Trust me it has a happy ending."

He should have has his man card stripped right then and there! :bash:

Before the server took a dump, there was a thread that had a bunch of amazing stories about hunting and living in the Methow back in the 40s and 50s form some of our elder statesmen, Idabooner and others that lived life like most of us only dream about.
I wish we could get those stories back.

good one! I like these old ones. While I joined in 2008, I didn't really spend much time at all on here until after Aaron was killed so all this pre 2013 stuff is all new
-
Oh yeah I loved putting that bear story together. Was just thinking about that hunt a couple of days ago. Almost 3 years ago.
Dan-O when we make it to the other side of this mess we’re in you’ll have to come over and check out the mount.
Karl if you ever make it over this way get in touch. Would be great to meet you and talk all things reloading, shooting and hunting.
-
Found another killer one! I met Scott in 2016 at the NW Mountain Challenge. We randomly rode the lift up and ended up shooting some targets together. Super good dude who really loves hunting and the whole process of prep. He lives it 24/7 365. He was training hard for that hunt and when we got to the end of the course there was a big hill you had to climb back up to get to the lift. I was also training pretty hard so when we got to the base of the hill he looked over at me and said "let's run it in dude" so like a couple kids we took off sprinting up the hill :chuckle: scott did his tag justice with a cranker bull and then turned right around and helped his uncle kill an even cooler bull!

sounds like a good time! Dan-o is on my short list of guys from huntwa that I HAVE to meet so maybe make it a trio
-
A couple that I have always appreciated and read in their entirety.
The youth turkey contest with success pics....doesn't get any better in my opinion.
Any other successful youth hunts with pictures.
Hirshey's stories....all of them.
Aaron's raffle....though a very somber moment, it showed how can always come together as a community.
-
There are some amazing threads. Storybook hunts that meet their expectations are the best. Plenty that fizzle too :chuckle: but they're still fun to follow.
Plat has earned a lifetime ban for the way he drags the site along.

I won't call it a good one but the "Bullwinkle" thread bears mentioning.
That one had me googling JD's replies. I can't remember them all but one of them was "give him a hickory shampoo" which apparently means to ruff you up with a police baton to the head. That thread was giving the bigfoot thread a run for awhile. >:(

I put it in the deer section because virtual campfire is an "opt in" section and gets missed by many. If mods have a better spot for this I'm fine with it being moved
I don't remember the Montana ram story but I hope you can find it because I'd love to see it!

This story is about a buck of my lifetime. The late Archery Season was well underway in Washington on December 1, 1993. The weather this day, was as bad as it gets here. It was raining, snowing and blowing, and made it awfully hard to leave the warm trailer and get the 4x4 started and deiced. Pure dedication to hunting for the ghostly Blacktail got me moving though. I had already decided to make my rounds to several “honey holes” that I frequented, and I was to make sure that I arrived at a certain one by 0830. In many previous trips to this particular hole, I had always seen some type of game, Cow elk, doe deer, coyote, standing next to a huge cedar stump in the middle of a swamp at 0830.The stump seemed to have an affect on the animals, and they used it as some sort of haven or rest stop on the way across the swamp. The stump is 35 yards down a 20-30 foot drop off an old quarry that sits above it. I had measured the distance many times with my range finder, just in case I ever saw something I wanted to shoot. After driving about 5 miles in this blinding storm, I reached the road to the swamp. I slowly made my way up the nastiest road that you can imagine. My big old F250 4x4 was sideways most of the time, but I was determined to be there by the appointed time of 0830. I arrived at the Quarry, and as I turned the 250 around, I noticed something out of the ordinary at the stump. I thought to myself, “I have never noticed that big old rock laying by that stump.” The snow and rain had by now turned to mostly hard rain, and the wind was blowing up from the swamp. I got out my trusty bino’s and glassed the “rock” a little closer, and lo and behold the rock had “antlers” all over it. Lying beside the stump in a cedar bed, was this big old buck, sound asleep, or he appeared to be. With the wind and rain blowing up from him, he could not have smelled me, and I doubt that he even heard the 250 come up the road. If he did, he did not care. Now, what do I do? I am not the world’s greatest shot with a bow, but I can hit most anything I shoot at up to 40 yards. After my heart settled down a little, I decided it was a now or never opportunity to finally harvest the buck of a lifetime. I got out of the truck, and nearly drown from the rain. The buck was presenting a large target, about 3 feet across with his tail toward me and his head laid back over his left shoulder. I figured I could punch him in the spine and keep him in place at least. So, with all my effort, I drew back the bow, held my 50 yard pin just above him, and let it fly. Well, about that time the buck lifted his head, exposing his neck, the wind got my arrow, and I lost sight of it. The buck jumped up, stood there for a second and then stepped behind the stump, and all I could see was him shaking his head back and forth. Then he disappeared into the “dog hair” on the other side of the swamp. I thought how strange that was. Then, I thought “I have to see if I hit that deer”. I am so wet and shaking so bad by this time, that I must have lost a little of my senses. I completely forgot about an accessible road about 200 yards on the other side of the swamp. In my excitement, I bailed off that bank down into the swamp. Little did I know that the swamp was chest deep in water, and mud. Panic then gets me, but the thought of the buck getting away overcame the panic and I made it across the swamp to the stump. There was no sign of the deer or my arrow. The rain had wiped out most of the snow except for along and under the dog hair. I spotted a few drops of blood in the snow. Aha, a blood trail. I followed it, and lying about 15 yards in the dog hair was this big old beautiful buck, dead as a doornail. The arrow had sliced right through his jugular vein. At this time, I was really shaking and could not get any wetter. I reached for my fanny pack where I carry my knives and other things I need, and you guessed it, the fanny pack was still in the pickup. Oh woe is me. So, back up to the pickup I tried to go. I found a better path out of the swamp, but still had to get up that 20-30 foot sheer bank. After much struggling, slipping and sliding and cussin for leaving my equipment in the truck, I made it. Then, of course back down the bank I had to go again and across the swamp back to the buck. He was no easy thing to field dress. He weighed over 200 pounds and was very difficult to turn over. Finally, I had him prepared for movement. You guessed it, back up the bank I had to go again. I made it and got on my CB and called my hunting partner. He came over, and he remembered the road on the other side of the swamp. We went there, and after much searching through the dog hair, was able to locate the buck by the swamp. We moved the buck over 200 yards to the road and the pickup. The buck is a 7x5 and measured 116 5/8 Pope and Young. Thanks for reading my story. Keep em coming, these stories are exciting. Chuck T

So Coach's hunt for big Nasty went 29 pages and almost 96,000 views! That even beats out Hirshey's moose hunt. Gotta be a huntwa record of a non drama filled hunt story :dunno:

Found another good one! jj's big CO buck!

Answer to question about where I ended up hitting my Big Buck. It hit him right in the chin and neck fold. The arrow kept going. Still out there somewhere. Muskrat

Big nasty was epic .. so much more than a hunt ... it was about healing and making new friends. Bringing members together for cause more powerful than a hunt. It's really changed my life and I came out the back end with a new group of friends that I'd lay my life down for.... Off of that came Karl's hunt for Arron that was epic as they come ... dedication and preparation ... absolute will failing was not a option .....ended in g asssrown ass men bawling like babies......that's what it's all about.

Another set of threads I love are the auction and donation threads for members and friends ...... I had so many people steep up and help my neighbor when he lost his wife . Keegan's thread was another that touched my heart ....thanks for always being there guys and gals.

On a lighter note I always got a kick out of Biggerhammers posts seems like he got the ban button pretty often lol.

:yeah:
What a gutwrencher Keegan’s thread was! Such an awesome outcome for that young man!

.....oh and C post 😳

Phool's Moose Hunt where the antlers popped off the night before he shot it was one of my favorites. Anything Hirshey posts. The hunt where Phool helped the guy that drew the incentive tag get that big mulie. Anything where Boneaddict takes a photo. CoryTDF's archery elk hunt that was reprinted in Eastman's BHJ. I think all of these have already been mentioned and linked.

Bobcat thread is the funniest thing I have ever read on here.. :chuckle:
