So I am a hunter education instructor and absolutely love it. It is a great way to give back. I also love to talk and it gives me a captive audience for 4 hours a night. :chuckle:
One of the perks of being an instructor other than the free shirt and hat is special permits. I signed up because I love to hear myself talk and then found out about the permits. If you teach at least one class a year you are eligible to put in for some permits, multiseason elk, multiseason deer and a general pool for different elk and deer tags. If you teach two online certification classes you get to put your name in another drawing.
I was lucky enough to draw a hunter ed multiseason elk tag in the past and this year a multiseason deer tag.
I also had my name in the pool for teaching the online certification class. I was drawn for that tag third on the list. There are six tags, any deer 100 series GMU's except 157, any deer GMU 245&247, any deer 335-368, any bull 336-368, any elk 382, 388, and all 500 series GMUs except GMU 522 or any deer 600 series GMU's.
The tag you get is an extra tag meaning you can take one additional deer or elk to your general license. You can hunt any season, general or permit that the GMU is open with the method permitted during that season.
The first winner took the Klickitat and 500 series elk tag, the second winner took the Yakima bull tag and I took the 245&247 mule deer tag. I thought about taking the whitetail tag as I never get to hunt those. I hunt mule deer every year at Swakane with my family. Mule deer just seemed like the right choice.
I am crazy excited for this hunt. I hunted in 245 once my very first year hunting. I shot a 130" 4x4 during the general rifle deer season. I hunted GMU 247 once with a bow back in 2000 or 2001 when it was still an OTC hunt in late November and got my biggest buck to date, 160".
With this permit I can hunt the rifle permit season in both units, 11/1-11/20, I can then hunt the archery permit season in 247 11/21-11/30 and if I still have a tag I can hunt 12/1-12/8 archery permit season in 245.
My plan is to hunt the last week of the rifle permit season with my bow. If I can't get close enough and I really want a particular deer I will have a rifle nearby. Then I will switch to the bow season and hunt entiat and if I am still not done I can hit Chiwawa for the late late bow season.
I plan to hunt with family and friends and more than anything just want to look at a ton of deer. I would love to shoot something bigger than 160" to beat my personal best but this isn't going to be so much about inches of antler as just having a blast looking at a ton of nice deer.
I will try to share as much of this hunt as I can and if anyone wants to chime in on this thread until then about their experience in these units in the past feel free. If you have any questions about the hunter education program and permits also feel free to ask.
This thread is open to just about anything except the Corona Virus! I don't even want to think about it when I look at this thread. There are plenty of threads to discuss that if you want to.

Congrats
-
Awesome! That's a great draw. Lookin forward to tagging along.
-
So excited for you! Well deserved and I wish you the best of luck! Officially tagging along

I haven't been in Entiat in 20 years. Is it safe to assume the roads are not any better? I know hunting swakane for the past 20 years the roads have gotten way worse and I assume that is because they are spending tons of money on the roads in Entiat. :chuckle:
To save on gas I was going to take my kids toyota and get some cable chains for the front. That should be good right? :chuckle:
-
Youll have a blast, I had a quality archery tag a couple years ago there and it was worth the (short 7 year) wait.
best of luck!

Getting closer and I can't help but believe this early snow is going to make for an epic hunt.
First trip over is going to November 7th, might stay the night and hunt again on the 8th if it is looking good.
Making another day trip on the 11th. Then I plan to be there the 14th to the 20th.
Hoping the snow keeps coming.
My plan is to hunt with my bow. My buddy will be carrying my rifle just in case. Another buddy will hold the bullets and shooting sticks. All three of us have to agree that it is a good buck.
Like I said in my first post 160" is my goal. That being said, non typical stickers and kickers trump inches and net score.
I am really looking forward to seeing a bunch of deer and spending time with my friends and family in the woods.
-
Best of luck, Rainier.
-
Have a fantastic time
Hope you get a BIG snow

Brand new toyo mud terrains are going on this week in preparation for that BIG snow I am hoping for.

Are those the Open Country M/Ts? Nice tire, especially if you got the buy 3, 1 free deal.

Yes open country, no buy one get one free but they are a great tire.

So the closer I get to this thing the more I am second guessing my thought to try with a bow first. This is a second deer tag so I can still use my archery tag in the late archery season at my regular spot.
I am starting to lean towards just getting within 200 yards and shooting with the rifle. There is so much that can go wrong with a bow, I would hate to screw this hunt up.

I get the anxiety butterflies in situations like this.
It's totally why I didn't bring my muzzleloader on my mountain goat hunt, then I killed a goat at 99 yards.
-
I say it a lot but if you want to hunt a big deer grab your bow but if you want to kill big deer then pick up a gun. Even a muzzleloader is a completely superior weapon to a bow. Archery not only severely shortens your effective range but eliminates a lot of angles and also eliminates shooting a moving animal.
I totally get the enjoyment of archery hunting (I do lots of it) but there is lots of opportunities to bow hunt and not very many opportunities at special hunt opportunities like this. Not to mention the vast majority of guys lower their standards if they are bow hunting. Id say take your gun, sift through as many deer as it takes to find the one you actually want and not the one thats good enough just because he's in a good spot for a stalk :twocents:

And do you regret not using your muzzle loader ? Do you think it changed the experience?

Thanks Karl, you are spot on. I am really starting to lean towards just doing it with a gun and then hit swakane with a bow for the late archery season. So many more options for shots and follow up shots with a gun if things go wrong. I really want to hedge my bets for everything going right.
-
I have targets at 100, 200 and 400 yards at my cabin that I have been practicing on. Going to send a few more down the barrel this weekend and should be dialed in for next weekend.

No regrets at all. I just thought it would be cool to kill one with the muzz. Doesn't change a thing for me. Still the coolest hunting experience I may ever have.
Rainier10 is much more of a die hard bowhunter than I am a muzzleloader hunter.

Agree with the other comments. Scrap the bow take the rifle. Then you can discard the idea of coordinating a potential stalk/shot with the bow and just focus on getting in rifle range. If this is a "quality" hunt in fact, or is a quality type hunt based on the circumstances of your hunter ed incentive, maximize the chances of getting the one you want with a gun.

This is a quality hunt. November 1-20. Peak rut. Just need more snow. It is at the same time as 15 other rifle permits in the entiat or 21 permits in chiwawa, I can hunt both units. If I don't shoot one during that timeframe I can still hunt 21-30 with a bow in entiat and then December 1-8 with a bow in chiwawa. The archery hunts have 30 entiat permits and 8 chiwawa permits. Should be low pressure whatever season I am hunting. I have to use whatever weapon is allowed during the general permit hunt so I can use a bow during rifle if I want but I can't use a rifle during the archery permit season.
-
Hey if the snow doesn't come in, we can always backpack in to the deer :chuckle:
I know a guy with a loaner Tenzing pack. It's gonna be awesome.

No it won't! I should have screwed with those straps more and tried to get it to fit me. That was miserable.
I just ordered an Orange Aglow vest in camouflage. I have the standard all orange ones but decided to get stealthy and go with the camouflaged model.

Great first day shot a grouse with my bow.
20 degrees with snow in the afternoon.
Saw 30 something does, 5 or 6 bucks, two of those were decent, this one and one that was a little bigger.
-
Day two was another great day in the field with friends and family. Not a ton of snow the night before but some. Not as cold today. Cloud cover all night kept the deer from using the moonlight.
Still not seeing the big migration. Lots of deer. 85 today, maybe 15-20 bucks. Mostly little guys. Saw two decent bucks and got a photo of this one at 40 yards.
-
Also bumped into this guy in Chiwawa. Thought it was a really big bear, then thought grizzly and finally got glsss on him and realized it was a moose. Walked up to him and took this photo at less than 20 yards.
-
Another through spotting scope when we first saw him
-
Awesome! For sure tagging along on this one.
-
Good luck! I know this will be epic.
-
Got some new shoe laces this weekend. I'm ready to go. 180 or bust!!
-
good luck guys, hopefully your help is decent :chuckle:
-
So glad to hear from someone who drew this tag. Good luck!
-
Shoot one so big you don't have to lie about it.
-
180 or bust. :chuckle:
I feel like my best chance of closing the deal on a giant is the last two days of the rifle season.
I feel like my best chance of seeing a giant is during the archery season the next week after rifle.
I did shoot the head off of a grouse at 25 yards this weekend so I am dialed in with the bow if I can just get close enough.
-
4" of new snow and snowing hard in Chiwawa. 2" of snow in the town of Entiat. Heading back tonight. It's about to get real good I think.
160" or best. Hoping to not even have to think about it and just know it is big when I see it.
-
This could be really good... 8)
-
Good luck! The snow will definitely have them moving, hopefully it wasn't a little too late for the rifle season.
-
Good luck fellas. Can't wait to see what shows up.

Good luck

Just got back over here. Hoping to see a bunch of deer tomorrow. Wife is holding the bullets.
-
Is she teasing you with them when you see a buck.!
Here you go. Nope never mind.
-
56 does and 10 bucks so far. Mostly 2points and spikes, one small 4x4. 4” of snow. Hunting entiat today. Clear sunny day 25degrees.
-
This weather pattern should have things on the move. Good luck!
-
There are tracks everywhere. Deer were still moving at 10am in small groups, 3-6, biggest group had 10.
-
Good Luck!
-
This is a great thread! Good luck!
-
Bluebird sky’s all day. Right before the end of day clouds moved in and snow started. Hopefully it snows all night and clears again tomorrow. Should be another epic day.
-
Good luck! Enjoy your hunt!
-
Awesome morning hunt, 75 does and 15 bucks before 10am. A couple of pretty nice bucks that were tough to drive away from. 100 yard shot flat ground, would have been easy but just not the deer I am hoping for.
Spent the afternoon setting up camp for my late archery hunt.
Back at it again tomorrow. Hoping to find mister big.
-
How is the snow?
-
Snow is good. Probably 6-8” up high. Sunny spots melt off shaded areas are holding snow. Not going to get any tonight but more tomorrow mid morning.
I have just been hunting Entiat this weekend. Haven’t been to chiwawa since last weekend.
I was in swakane canyon today setting up wall tent, 3” in places but light dusting to none in areas that get sun.
Late archery guys better have good tires and chains.
-
Sweet
Thank you for the update
I am setting up the wall tent Friday
Good luck
Sounds like your having a great time!! It’s fun fallowing along

This tag has been a blast. I have never passed on deer like I’m passing on with this tag. It turns my stomach to do it but it’s what you have to do if you really want a big one.
The other thing that has been great about this tag is sharing info with other members. I have different text chains going with other Huntwa members plus this thread.
OPdinkslayer, Wilsoka, FishBio31, Ridgerunner, teanawayslayer, mburrows and Jackelope have all been super helpful and awesome to talk to. Thank you all and thanks to everyone following along here with words of support.
This is an amazing opportunity that I have been blessed with.
I think Wednesday is going to be the day but maybe I get lucky tomorrow or Tuesday.

Foggy this morning and then dumping snow. Took a hike and saw at least 80 deer in a one mile hike. No shooter bucks for this tag. Any general tag and I would have smoked one for sure.
Supposed to snow all day. Heading back out after lunch just to drive roads so they are passable tomorrow. It’s about to get really good and it is already pretty darn good. Just need to find Mr. Big.
-
Good luck.
-
Good to hear.
Shoot straight.
-
Love these updates! Good luck.
-
Wow thanks for all the updates. It makes me realize I'm unfit for a quality tag. I wouldn't be able to hold out! You got this man!

Inaccurate info. You just gotta want it :chuckle:
That or get someone to come with you to hold your ammunition. Don't let them give you the ammo until you've reached your pre-set goal for your hunt.

Can’t wait to see the outcome! You’ll find the one your looking for!!

Tonight was awesome again, 60 does, 20 bucks. Lots more bigger deer but not big enough. I just heard a rumor of one that beats my goal. Tomorrow may be the day. Tons of new snow and tomorrow is gonna be sunny.

Awesome good luck

Beginning to think you are setting at home in your PJs downloading random pictures and just leading us along :chuckle:
I would have pulled the trigger already 8)
Send some pics of shooters with GPS coordinates and time/date stamp to prove you are boots on the ground :bdid:
Will you notch the tag already?
-
Tagging along!!! Pull the trigger on a big one. Good luck.

So we heard rumors of a 165” deer that Opdinkslayer had passed yesterday. He had video and I said I would like to see that deer in person. He told us to meet him at the intersection in the morning and we would take a look.
We got to the spot and sure enough the deer was there. We started to hike up and a couple of other guys needed to get by real bad. We told them ewe had a shooter in the bowl but they had to get by now. We moved and they drove through real slow in their drivel truck, stopping and looking at all the deer in the bowl. Needless to say target buck moved on and we didn’t get a good look at him.
We went opposite directions and saw a ton of deer today.
-
We passed this guy up. Nice deer but forks were too small.
-
OPdinkslayer called and said they spotted the buck again. We headed to their location and saw too really nice deer on the way to them. They were tough to pass not knowing if the buck we were trying to get eyes on was a shooter or if he would even be there when we got there.
We pull up and he is on his feet. They have the spotter on the buck and his custom long rifle set up with his coat on the ground to lay on.
We check the buck out and he is right at 160-165.
He is broadside quartering slightly. They have been sitting on him for an hour and a half in the cold snow. Definitely the biggest buck we’ve seen and right at my 160” mark.
We are seeing more deer and bigger deer every day.
3 days left to hunt
What to do?
-
You should be able to get a better one that thing. Good luck
-
This is one of the deer I passed on the way to look at the deer Op had spotted for me.

Snow melts a little as it comes but gets just a little deeper everyday.
Archery guys are going to love it.
Opening day is going to be epic.

Luckily this incentive tag was a second deer tag so I can still hunt the late archery season in my regular spot.

Spoiler alert, I’m gonna need that second tag.

I really wanted my wife to be there but she stayed home with the kid this week. I was solo Monday but today both of my buddies were there and Opdinkslayer was really hoping I would shoot this buck that he had passed twice.
It just seemed like the perfect time and perfect buck.
Thanks Op for all of your help and for letting me use your super sweet rifle.
Thanks again to all of the members that helped on this hunt.

He dropped right where I shot him.

When I first put my hands on him.

Nice buck! Straight on pic?

Great buck and thanks for sharing. Congrats!!

Nice buck congrats

Heading back out in a few to look for a buck that Opdinkslayer won’t pass. That guys has some crazy will power. I just couldn’t drive away from this deer and he did twice. Hoping he can find the buck he wants. Kind of jealous that he still has a tag. It was so much fun looking at all of these and seeing so much new country. This truly was an amazing experience.
-
That's an awesome deer! Thanks for sharing your experience with us! What a cool tag to have
-
Here is a shot showing the amazing scenery and a little more of a straight on look. You can also tell how big the bases are. I can’t get my hand around them.

Great buck!
Love the mass

Congrats sir! Them 215 bergers are nasty medicine on muley bucks :IBCOOL:
I shot my first deer 25 years ago with a gun. Went to archery the next year. I’m not a “gun guy”. I was out there with my bow hoping for a close shot and had an of the shelf cabelas package rifle and scope. I was confident out to 200 yards and iffy on anything beyond that. @opdinkslayer can give you guys the specifics on his rifle. I think you are pretty familiar with the rifle too Karl. What I know about the rifle and bullets was they did their job. When I got on the ground that stock fit great to my shoulder and eye. It was rock steady on target. This sight picture was crystal clear. It was dialed to the correct yardage to just put the cross hairs where I wanted to hit. The trigger was so smooth and easy to pull. There was hardly any recoil and I watched the buck in the scope just nose dive as the bullet entered just behind his left shoulder right where I was aiming low in the chest and completely KO’d the opposite leg. It literally took him to the ground right where he was. He was dead in 2 seconds. No thrashing, no death kick while on the ground.
That gun was a stone cold killer and I was just any other idiot that could have pulled the trigger. I’m sold 100% on custom setups.
-
Nice work!
Congratulations on a great Buck.
-
Couple more photos
-
That’s a really cool buck. Congrats!
-
I know score is gonna come up. My mark was 160 or better all along. Trash, stickers or droppers would trump all of that. The right experience would play a toll as well.
This buck looked right at 160 or bigger. I had both of my buddies there, they had been gone the past three days of the hunt. OPdinkslayer and his son had sat on this deer for over an hour in the cold snow waiting for us to get there. I loved the mass of this buck. I loved that so many people had been and were involved in this hunt. I didn’t want it to end but everything seemed right and I pulled the trigger.
I will get it officially scored. We aren’t pros but our unofficial attempt came up with 158-162 gross. The 158 was using a string to measure with and you loose an inch at the bases with the string getting in between burrs. When we used a flexible tape and got more precise with all measurements rather than quick numbers we came with 162.
I will come back with an official score in January but I think it is fair to call it the 160” buck I was looking for without any arguments.
-
Good Job Rainier!! I like the bases on that old boy..
-
What a deer, congrats man!! I shoot 190 bergers out of my .300, it destroys animals. Great job!
-
I’ll get a better pic of the bases later today.
They were painful to hold onto for pictures. Just gnarly bases.
-
Congrats sir! Them 215 bergers are nasty medicine on muley bucks :IBCOOL:
215 bergers? He clearly beat it to death with a log. :chuckle:
Awesome buck man. Congrats.

Hell yeah! No way I’m passing that buck!
-
Really cool how everything and everyone came together with you on this. That buck is awesome and I like that he has eye guards as well. Some don't care for guards on mule deer but I think they're great. Thanks for making this thread!

Pretty deer. Congrats.
-
cool thread, great pics and nice buck Rainier!!! This even got Carl out to comment... :IBCOOL:
-
That’s a stud buck! Congrats

Great hunt!

I showed this pic to my daughter last night. First thing she said was how pretty it was there. Next thing she asked was when we could go over there and look for deer.
Congrats buddy. I'm super happy for you. You did the tag justice, found the path and killed a great old buck.

Great Buck!! Fun thread to follow. Thanks for all of the updates.

Sitting up here waiting for the snow to let up & fog to clear reading Ranier’s story. I must be uglier than I thought because he didn’t include a pic of us both with his buck! :chuckle:
I’ll just add what an enjoyable day that was teaming up yesterday & watching an archery guy absolutely flatten a big ol mule deer buck in his tracks from 300 yards. My way of repaying Rick for all the help getting familiar with the area & what to expect. Trust me members we had to ask Regis to use a phone a friend to walk away from this buck the first time. Good times with good dudes!
Now if the weather gods will cooperate we can continue the search for my buck! Got brief eyes on a deep forked buck yesterday while trying to get on Rick’s in the morning from 1000 yds away so we are in that neighborhood trying to dig him up when we can see. :bash:

Can't wait to see yours good luck man!

Nice buck!

First off, congrats on a great buck. Second, congrats on your ability to hold out until you found the buck you wanted. Third, it was great to see a Hunter Ed instructor pull this tag and follow your hunt all the way through day by day. I am also a HE Instructor and put in for these tags every year.
A word about the "score". I think anyone who pays attention knows that score never tells the whole story of the rack. It's a good benchmark, but it isn't the be-all/end-all. That buck is probably one of the most impressive 160"-ish bucks I've seen. It just looks a lot bigger than it scores. I am predicting that most people walking into your living room and looking at that buck on the wall will guess him at over 170".
Congrats again on a FANTASTIC buck. And thanks again for taking us all along for the ride.

Congrats on a beautiful buck and thanks for taking us along for the ride...
-
Awesome!! Congrats on a beauty!
-
great buck and narrative. Thanks for taking us all along on the journey. Those custom setups are pretty sirens.... next thing you know you're talking to Karl Blanchard for an hour arguing the benefits of this or that.... but Karl's worth it.
Congrats again. Always nice to see good guys find success.

Great thread. Thanks for sharing!

So I know Vernon struggled not shooting this deer. Dude has willpower.
We could have been to the deer in 30 minutes but we sat above Vern and his son for an extra hour just to see how strong his will was pass this deer. :chuckle: Not really but it would have been fun to do.
Vern and his son were great guys. Another internet buddy for life. I was the first person to kill a deer with his new gun. I really hope he gets to kill one today with it.
If he doesn’t tag out I’ll let him share time with the mount. Joint visitation or something.
-
Here is a photo with Vern finally getting his hands on this deer.
-
I agree on the score.
Jackelope has the best signature line about it not being about inches of antler but about time spent with family and friends.
I had set the number of 160 to have a bar. The way it went down and having so many good people involved added more to the experience than any number of inches could have improved it.
-
Back home tonight processing meat.
-
How far was your shot with the custom?
-
Just over 300 I think.
It was so easy with that gun.
I totally need to get one.
-
Happy for you Rick! It was a pleasure reading this and I enjoyed it! Glad we crossed paths weeks before the hunt started. Thanks for keeping in touch and the great communication while I was up there. Glad we both got and found what we were looking for. Hope Vern finds his 180” giant! Take care bud and keep in touch!
-
Great thread and congratulations on your buck! What a specimen. Hoping OP hunting karma comes back around for him too :)
-
I just can’t express my gratitude enough for the amazing people on this site that followed this thread, that helped with private messages, offered optics if needed, came over just to check areas that I just couldn’t get to in one day. The amount of support adds more to this hunt and experience than any amount of inches of antler every could have. I will always look at this buck and think back to how awesome this experience was.

Got the deer all butchered, cut, ground, wrapped and in the freezer.
Heading out for late archery deer camp in the morning.
Hoping to connect on a mature buck.
Good luck to all of the late archery guys with Entiat permits.
-
Good deal.
Great buck.
I bet that Bull pac made easy work of him.
-
Congrats nice buck. My dad had the Entiat tag, unfortunately we had to go home two days early cuz of a family emergency. Lots of bucks coming down by the day. Passed on some dandy’s thinking we had time left. Super bummed
-
Wow, a couple of big bucks right there!
-
:yeah:

Beautiful!!
