Title: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: jackelope on April 10, 2009, 11:46:02 AM
you guys who are posting new ads in this classifieds board are hopefully aware that this board is going bye bye...

everyone got a pm and we at hunt-wa would encourage you to start to use the new classifieds boards we have started.
here's the details as far as what is happening in brief.

Quote
By rolling out this new system I believe that it also makes sense to retire the current classifieds board inside of the forums. I am establishing an end date of April 23rd 2009 for that. On that morning anything inside the classifieds board at http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/board,13.0.html will be deleted. There will be NO migration of existing advertisements into the new system. This is your official notice.

Please consider utilizing the new classifieds system at http://hunting-washington.com/classifieds/index.php starting now. There might be a few issues to work out in the next few weeks but overall it has been tested to some extent and some members have reported positive feedback in regards to this new change.

the new board can be found here:
http://hunting-washington.com/classifieds/index.php

this is your other official notice  :chuckle:

thanks.

you guys need to thank Ray for the hard work getting it set up.
the key will be using it to it's full advantage. it's really neat if you mess with it and figure out some of the new bells and whistles there are to work with.

Very nice!!! I like that you seperated the catagories and added the distance calculator.

see attached image. That is how you should be editing your ads. Using "Product Options" in the upper right corner.
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: catwithboost on April 10, 2009, 04:18:44 PM
I just figured that out.
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: Ray on April 10, 2009, 04:30:44 PM
If you decide to delete your add it does not open or reload a new page. It will give you a check box to delete it after selecting delete from the "Product Options" drop down. Sometimes you will have to scroll down to see it. This might also catch people off guard.

Post by: Ray on April 10, 2009, 04:31:51 PM
Users can also select "Edit Ad" and then scroll down and select a check box to delete ad. Basically there is more than one way to do it.

But I do not see away to edit or delete a post you do not start. Like if you post a comment is there a way to delete or edit it?

Yep. No option for that.

Or  no spell check :dunno: Sorry just trying to help and pick it apart.

You're not going to get forum features. It is a classifieds system not a bulletin board system. Learn how to spell I guess. There are lots of browsers which offer spell check add ons if it is that important to someone. In addition to that there are lots of bulletin board systems which do not have spell check.

you can edit your post at the bottom right under your post. say the post you made about the thumbhole stock on your encore ad...look under it to the right, there's a little edit box.

Jackelope users cannot currently edit their comments. Only moderators and admins. You see those buttons because you are an administrator.

So it turns out I can tweak the settings which permits normal users to edit their own comments. I'll go push those buttons in a moment.

I think the new classifieds section is pretty cool. Over time you moderators can improve it to the members liking/suggestions hopefully but for the most part it should be a good addition to the site.  Nice work! :rockin:

Is it possible to "see" if there are new comments with opening a particular add? For instance if you open the rifle window there is a list of rifles and when they were posted, and how many views, but I don't see if there are new comments, or how many comments there are.

yeah i would like to know how to find out if anyone has posted a comment on my ads.

you have to open the ad and look.
thats it.
you could click on "my ads" up near the top and it should be easier that way maybe?

ok thats easy enough  :P
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM

Actually you can do this. You have to receive notifications. For some reason the email system is broken but it will give you a private message every time someone replies to an ad you subscribe to. I have followed up with the people that make the software but they are very difficult to work with. You have to be a cop and prove that their stuff doesn't work before they even give you the time of day. So much for paid products.
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: Ray on April 13, 2009, 07:30:11 PM
Ok I fixed the email notifications. If you elect to receive notifications then you can get an email every time someone replies to a particular ad. I believe this also works for ad categories as well.

Here's another tip - if you want to know how far away someone is then either fill in the zip code info or use the advanced search mode to find the ads which are closest to you http://hunting-washington.com/classifieds/search.php

The whole distance thing is nice. But how about a spot for the actual location of the item. Right next to the place where it says "Price"

Overall, it is a nice feature.
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: Ray on April 16, 2009, 01:04:43 PM
Because it seems pointless. The seller has control over this. The products a user sells is not attached to their profile. It is attached to the information they fill in when uploading an ad.

If I sell shoes there I can fill in any zip code I want for that product.

If I sell a shirt then I can fill in a different zip code for that product.

At any rate - this is as good as it is going to get. There will be no new features. They either do not exist in the product\system or there is nobody willing to create them.

Ok - It was raised to me that the paypal option is a bad idea on the guns because someone will inadvertently buy or sell a gun and get their account closed.  Therefore I removed that option.

However in order to do that I had to edit a number of ads in these categories. If they are incorrect my apologies (although they seem to be ok at a cursory glance).

Also the change means that if you want to sell guns or ammo there is a different template for that as opposed to selling other items (because I removed the paypal feature). You'll notice this when uploading something new in the classifieds.

******For sale (No guns no ammo)
******For sale guns and ammo

I believe this change makes sense.

Thanks

Ray, I have a little feedback...

Positives: I like the fact that the new classifieds are much more organized than the old system.

Negatives: Whenever I click on an image to "supersize" it, the image pops up but is still the same old size as before. Not any larger. When I uploaded the images in my ad, they were 640x480, but when I supersize them, they don't get any larger than the thumbnail size. This may just be an issue that I am experiencing, I am not sure... Just for your info, I am using Firefox 3.0.8 on a Mac running OSX 10.4.11.

Thanks again for the new classifieds section.
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: Ray on April 18, 2009, 03:41:09 PM
The classifieds doesn't make your images larger. Otherwise to look at the full size image you click on the supersize link. NOT the image itself. I verfied one of your images is full size. I suspect you clicked on the image and not the supersize link because that is what you said you did. Verified on my mac and my windows pc as well as with firefox, safari and internet explorer.

Ray, you are correct... i now feel like an idiot.  :chuckle: I was clicking on the image, assuming that would supersize it. but you are correct, if I click on the actual word "supersize" under the image, then it does show it larger. thanks for clarifying that.

You probably would need to log in at that point.  When it happens next time, look up at the bar and see if it shows Log In or Log Out....

That or you've been deemed unworthy.  :dunno:

If you give me your password and I can log in from here I'll chalk it up to the problem is on your end. I've done this once with Michelle I believe. But you have yet to express anything further than "I can't get in". While that may seem explanatory for your experience it does nothing for someone else as a starting point to even get an idea what is going wrong. Your username is not expressly forbidden in any sense and I don't understand how you can conclude that you are being specifically denied the features in the classifieds area. There are hundreds of people using it weekly who seem to get in and do their business without issue. So there is some degree of stability in the system. If there's a problem, details are the most important pieces to understanding them.

Ray, will send you and jack my password.

When I go to it says log in, I klik on that it then says username and password, I then do that it sends me to another screen and it says I am timed out please go back and try again. It has done this every time for me? I was joking about being banned from the classifieds, did not mean it to come across the way it was interpreted.

I am able to login successfully but get this when I try to look at the bow section: "You do not have permission to view this category. "  I do not seem to have an issue with the riffles or handguns.  Have not check each category.
Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM

If you're timing out trying to log in - then there is a slow connection between you and the server. It's not a bug or denial of permission.

Title: Re: NEW CLASSIFIEDS FORUM
Post by: Ray on August 25, 2010, 01:12:01 PM
Ok we've narrowed the probelm for the login to a specific set of characters in the password which do not permit a login. My recommendation is to try setting a new password without the potentially problematic character(s).

As far as no permission - will look later.

There are several issues with the classifieds, I can't seem to figure it out, I have investigated a new system, if we can't get it working properly soon we may change classified programs.

I posted a classified ad yesterday and it wouldn't let me edit any details, I had to delete the original ad and post a new ad to make changes.
