Title: Morel report?
Post by: wt on April 29, 2020, 05:18:39 PM
I'm going out this weekend or  looking for the elusive Morel. I'll be out on the eastern slope off I-90 or hwy2. Is anyone seeing any shrooms between Easton and E-burg or between Lake Wenatchee and Leavenworth?

Went out today. SLOW.

We need a bit more moisture and some warmer evenings. Hiked for 3 hours to find a dozen or so. Beautiful day to be out tho!

What I really want to know....where are the damn sheds? Spent years learning mushrooms and close to the same amount of time looking for elk sheds and never found a damn thing!

Good luck and be 100% on your ID, Gyromitra are out in abundance.

If you know the nile very well, send me a message.

Also check the  burn scar up back up clear lake from 2018 and the burn scar that's north of 410 from 17. Lower elevations in both those areas should start seeing morels pop up between now and mothers days and continue into the higher elevations through second week of June.

Key word is disturbance.... windthrow, logging, last falls prescribed fires....

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like another week is well advised. Ditto jdb, I hammer the Chanterelle's most years, but I have about three Morels to show for two or three years of (passive) looking.

Was out yesterday up 410 and 12 and we found about thirty small ones. Only about 10 were fully out of the ground. My eagle eyed friend was finding them by looking for where they just emerge out of the ground with the blonde cap just sticking out. I think we were at about 3000 feet but we were definitely at least five miles from the snow line. I really want to find a big one. I've been morel hunting going on five year now and usually only find a few dozen per season and never one of the big ones.

Go up 410 past whislin jack lodge and start looking. They are coming out. If you have never found one it will take some time because the eye gets trained to see them and without that first one it could take a bit. I know after I found a few they started sticking out to me. Saw one the other day from about 8 feet away, something I never would have saw before I started doing it and finding them.

North Idaho-  went out yesterday with the lady for a good long hike.  We found them just starting to make an appearance, around 3000' elevation, both in the open and in dense timber under redcedar.  We only found 12, but it is still early, I think.

I was out above  lake Cle Elum  the last two weekends, and over on south Cle Elum ridge. I know what you mean by the lbm..., thousands. Two morels. I'm going south a little with the family tomorrow. We'll see if we get into them.

We went over to North Idaho yesterday and hiked around some of our morel spots- and they did not disappoint!  They are popping up everywhere.  We got a few black morels (I think Morchella conica), but mostly tan morels(M. esculenta)  Also picked a nice Ramaria formosa coral fungus, good for Asian stir fry recipes.  Got some arnica and yerbabuena for medicinal use, too.

Saw a cow elk on the drive in- there's a spot where several cows calve every year- fortunately not close to where we were hiking, so as not to disturb them this time of year.

I hope you all are having a good spring season.

Anyone have a gauge on the decline in morel production on the second year after a burn? I have only really had success the first year after a burn. The next year I either blank or get a couple.

Last year I filled a 5 gallon bucket with 6 to 10 inch morels in the Mcleod fire north of Mazama. This year went to the same area and came away with two dozen shrimps (size could be timing).

There are morels in Mazama? I haven't looked a lot but never found them up there but I was in 231 and not 218 (sounds like you were in 218 unit)

As to your question, the burn areas confuse me. This past weekend my friend and I realized we were in an old burn area. But judging by the heavily fading evidence of the burn, we determined the burn was probably at least three years ago but need to investigate further. If it was at least that old, it did not effect production too much far as I can tell. Found about a pound in 20 minutes.

They'll usually pop well for 2-3 years and then decline. I know pickers who go to the same spots for years after the burn.

I have had the same experience with burn areas. 1st year is awesome, but following years those same areas are no better producing than unburned ground.

As far as size, I will never figure that out. Marked 2 different ones this year, 1 week later #1 doubled in size, #2 no change. Another area that produces average sized yearly....this year they were the size of pop cans.....opposite of what you'd think with a dry spring.  :dunno:

I'm finding quite a few dried up ones. My areas are about 1-2 weeks ahead of normal. Never seen it so dry that the twigs crackle as you walk in shady areas that are usually wet or have remnants of snow. Not a good sign for the upcoming fire season.  :'(

I see one comment saying they will be OK and I don't disagree.  I will say though, the father-in-law was pretty specific about his storage for these wonderful fungi delights.  He ALWAYS kept them in Brown Paper Bags, loosely together at the top and always in a dark area, never in any direct light of any kind. I can't argue the point, he made some pretty damn tasty fried mushrooms with fresh steelhead.

Not likely as they will decay with that much trapped moisture.I learned a trick along time ago.I picked alot and even with ice and letting them breath the bugs continued to eat and after a few days you would lose many of them.I put a layer of cardboard on the bottom and top of the coolers and then put dry ice over the top.The co2 will displace the air and kill all the worms and it keeps the mushrooms cold without freezing them.I hope you can get to some place that sells dry ice.Walmart & Smart Foodservice sells it.

The wife had pics from the day she went out hunting with us, this wasnt the entirety of the weekend, just one day, or maybe a day and a couple hours from the day before that a few people went out.
We probably pulled 10-12 as big or bigger then the one in my wifes hand.

I'm not usually a trophy hunter, but it's sure fun to find a big one! This is the largest I've found to date  8) My little brother found his first ones also, ending a 2 year losing streak.

I think we got another week or so of the season may be much longer in other parts. I might head up Sunday. Last weekend was at about 4700 feet and they were more sparse and some very old and not worth keeping. Let at least 50 stand.

Just hitting fire shroom season where I'm at. Too bad the wholesalers at only paying $5 a pound right now or I'd be picking my butt off. Picked 18 pounds yesterday afternoon.

I'm not real big on eating mushrooms but have been told that the light colored ones are "better"?

Probably our last haul for this year. Found a lot at 6000'.  6 pounds today puts us at about 30# for this year. The dehydrator is getting a workout.  :)

I’m confused, do the different areas have different seasons? We found our first ones of the year just 2 weeks ago. Last year my mom was picking like mad in mid June? Also we’re staying unusually cold and rainy right now, gonna be looking for some this weekend

really depends on the area/weather/elevation.

Well thought we were done for the year, but.....they are still going strong in our main area.  :IBCOOL:

Pretty sure this mild/cold spring is letting the morels have a second go round. Found several that were grouped at the base with one of them dried/shriveled up, and the other in perfect condition.

Didn’t turn up any morels but we got a big bag full of shaggy manes, only have found those in the fall before.

That’s interesting on the shaggy manes I have never seen except fall? Also never found morels this late either. Weird year I guess

They are still around but gotta be at the elevation she was at or higher. The problem in my area is there is a lot less habit for them at that elevation so I am pretty much done for the year. IN any event, I may have warned of this already but don't eat a bunch of morels when you have been drinking (excessively). Got nasty sick, looked it up, and others seemed to have the same problem but not everyone. I'll be waiting a while before I bust out the frozen ones.

That's amazing! I've moved on to picking berries and thought morels were long done!
