I just put in for some Nevada draws. Anyone else trying to hunt the Silver State this year or hunt the state consistently in years past? Or did I just break the number one rule in Vegas...
-
Submitted my apps last night. Now we wait.
-
I'm in, long shot odds for me this year
-
I am in. Always long odds though. Good luck to all.
-
In as always, waiting period for elk sucks. Changed up my antelope choices quite a bit this year.
-
Between deer, elk, antelope...if you add up all my odds I'm probably hovering around a 5% chance at drawing in Nevada
-

I’m about .05% :chuckle:

 there is still a chance !!!
Honestly I think if you add up the 8 states I put in for might not even be 10% 😂
Still fun tho...I get my money's worth just in anticipation

I thought your odds were 100%? 😁
-
I'm in. I have a good feeling about desert sheep this year.
-
I’m in! I beat some LONG odds for elk last year, so not holding my breath.

Oh I forgot about that one. Yeah, good odds for one tag :)
-
In for sheep, points for deer and elk.
-
In for Sheep, Deer and Elk, poor odds on all!
-
Definitely poor odds but it can be done, in 7 years I’ve pulled a deer and an elk tag. Not the best strategy as a stand alone state but when you combine it with everything else, it can be that huge bonus tag you are hoping for.
-
ive drawn an elk tag with four points. You just never know!
-
I’m in for everything. Points only for lopes.

Nevada has the same point system as WA, correct?

I'm in for Archery deer again. Don't expect to get drawn unfortunately.
-
I drew a 241-245 tag in 2016 and a 221-223 tag in 2017...I’ll most likely be purchasing a tag if I want to hunt NV again.

I'm in. Drew a rifle deer tag my first year applying. There is always a chance.

I'm in for Sheep, Mule Deer, Elk and Loper. Slim odds on all with only a few points.
-
What's the upfront cost to apply?
-
I didn't even look at odds for elk and lope, just put in for points. But actually did some research for dear. There were 20 tags last year (muzzle loader/ALW) that had 33% or better chance for drawing and 8 tags with 50% or better..... didn't look at archery. Are the deer odds worse than the appear or are some folks going for some really good tags here?
So yup, I'm in for deer and points for elk and lope this year. First year in the draw.
Good to know we have some folk that try for the Silver State. Seen past threads but hadn't noticed any for this year. I was trying to do spring Turkey down there which was (personally) kaboshed due to COVID. Figures since I had the license this year and know that I'm going to get a license next year for Nevada Spring Turkey I should get my name in the hat for some big game.
If drawn, I'll be scouting for turkey on the way out....
Good luck everyone.
-
What's the upfront cost to apply?
Could be wrong but you need a non-resident license to apply I believe which was $156, then it's $10/app + misc wildlife fees (predator management fee etc.) You can opt to buy the tag once selected and not up front.
-
License is $156 then its $10 an app but there are "fees" so it ends up being $14 for deer and antelope and $19 for elk.
Just like most states, if you have a pile of points and zero odds of drawing it's by ones own choosing. Theres a good number of deer units that can be had with very few points. Elk is just tough as there is a ton demand for a limited number of tags. The wait will be rewarded though when you draw. There are gggggiant bulls in NV.
-
Never thought much about Nevada even though I’d always heard of the great hunting. The poor draw odds steered me away I guess. One year my in-laws and I were driving home from Phoenix and decided to drive up through Eastern Nevada on highway 93. That was all it took to get me to start applying. The drive up through Ely was awesome, but the highlight of the trip was going by the Ruby Mountains- stunning beauty. I always thought of NV as one big desert, but it’s so much more than that. I’m still waiting to draw- but I know it will be worth it when I do.

Yes, I had a similar moment. I bought a car in Las Vegas, flew down and drove the car back to WA. That drive up through the middle of Nevada was awesome. I finally got to hunt there last fall, and it did not disappoint. Can't wait to go back.
-
I can’t wait to hunt there as well, I think there is talk about limiting the choices from 5 to 3 which should help with the draw odds, I hope that goes through.

It kills me but I am going to let my two points in Nevada go. I am mostly interested in elk and it is one of the worst states for odds. I got started in the points game later in life than some folks, I'm in my early 40's so I wouldn't even reach 10% odds until close to 60, assuming no point creep. If I were 25 with two points I'd keep at it but I think I aged out of this state. I wish I had studied the odds closer before even trying in Nevada.
Good luck to you all, I'll come help you pack one out!
-
Nevada is a great state to hunt!!
Draw odds are no good, BUT allot better than WA.
I drew and hunted elk there in a good unit last year. Took 15 years.
Still better than my home state, WA. Took 19 years to draw a good elk tag here.
I've drawn two antelope, two deer and one elk over the 15 year period. All great D.Y.I. hunts.
Have not been able to do that in WA.
In the long run I've spent more money applying in WA. than Nev. Too not be drawn.
Tag cost are way higher when you do draw. But way better hunts.
Just my 2 cents.
I'm all in.

NV has of all the western states the best system out there. Any year you have a shot at drawing
-
In for Deer,Elk and sheep.
-
I am over 10 pts for everything but antelope in NV, still putting in for the upper end units but not the top ones. Odds still terrible but I will probably start looking at easier units to draw deer/elk. Sheep tags, well that's just horse shoe up the .....ss chance but you have to try.
-

I’m assuming that has more to do with the amount of tags, not the system?

The odds would go up substantially if they would only allow 1 or 2 choices to count. I wish they would change it. I am in regardless.
-
Still have until the 11th to buy points correct?

The system may be great but the odds are loooooong. In most states you have a shot at drawing in any given year since most have some sort of random pool that everyone is in, regardless of points. I'm sure Nevada is great and I am sorry I have to give up on it but just like in Vegas, the odds overwhelmingly favor the house.
I have a better shot at drawing an elk tag in Kentucky than in Nevada.

I wish I would have gotten in 5 years ago but I also can’t justify starting now, odds are long and getting longer every year. I’ll use that money on raffle tickets or start putting it toward one of my bucket list hunts instead.

Go hunt the imported birds in ther Rubies, not much money and a great chance to look around

Nevada is a bonus point system.
Everyone has a chance ever year.
The more bonus points you have the better the odds.
Nevada's system is just like Washington's, only better odds.
Costs less to apply and the hunt if when you are drawn is fantastic.
Do some research.
You have a better chance to draw an elk tag in Nevada that a Quality elk tag in Washington, and a way better hunt.
But I shouldn't be telling you this.
Will only hurt my odds.

I understand how the Nevada draw works and what my odds are, I have done the research. I don't think you are right about the odds or cost versus Washington but we could hash that out in PM rather than here.
I am really glad you like Nevada, and I am not kidding, I'd love to help you or anyone else hunt there. I don't have to be the trigger man to have a good time hunting. I hope to participate in an archery hunt in all the western states and only a couple will be with me as the tag holder. It's just that given all the variables in my life I've decided Nevada just isn't the right fit for me to apply.

Results in one week :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
I still have a good feeling about a desert sheep tag this year.

You too? I just know that the odds are going to be twice as good this year, nobody else is going to apply due to covid, right?

It looks like the draw just ended and is done, I wish WA was this transparent with the draw, it’s is a good explanation of how it all works

I think WA uses the same company so perhaps they will do the same?
Either way only a few more days of waiting until NV most likely crushes my hopes of hunting in that state this year.

Same here. But I can't feel too crushed since I already have 2 out of state mulie tags. 😂

I can’t believe that Nevada had a jump of roughly 5000 applicants with the current state of things. Apparently I’ve been overestimating the improvement in draw odds across western states this year

whats odd the saturday before the deadline they were 11,000 under! all those emails, extension and text messages got people applying
-
that and every single hunting website, application service or instagram personality constantly pushing people to apply for every state. Im sure the states love it.
-
The odds keep dropping every year no matter what craziness is going on in the world. A guy should feel pretty lucky about whatever tags he draws in any given year really.
-
I believe we start seeing a downturn after this year
-
I dropped out of the race in Nevada, so the odds improved for someone.

Nothing for me, but good luck to the successful.

Nothing for me either but my schedule is over full so I applied for some really long shot premium tags so had no expectations of drawing.

Nothing across the board for me. But congrats to those the got lucky!

Low and outside..............swing and a miss

Nada on the august archery mule deer hunt...guess I'll be hunting bear in WA now with the time off. :-)
