I see our wonderful state has cut into the WW modern rifle season in a new way.....Last year Oct 11-31....This year Oct 17-31. In the past you always had three weekends and then a few odd days....now they even END it on a Saturday. Would it have been that difficult to give you Sunday and end it on Nov 1 ? I see this as an extremely bad sign for the future that may have an effect on their funds as they drive people away. Late Buck is still 4 days as in the past.........Les

This was discussed a while back, and it has to do with when the x number saturday falls after a certain date, or something like that. I don't think the sky is falling quite yet...
-
I have been hunting since I was 10 (45 years) and it has never closed on a Saturday.....so it may be the beginning of future major changes....that inch seems to easily become that mile......Les

I hope it's just a typo. I remember 5 years ago (+/-) they had a misprint on the opening day of eastern washington elk..........they had it down as a Sunday. They had a correction to the regs listed on the website but I know that my uncle didn't check the website and he assumed they were just cutting back the season and screwing him on the first weekend; he missed opening day. :chuckle:

A coworker thought the same thing with a ml season. I told him to check online. He did and found the paper regs were wrong. Long story short, as they were packing out elk they ran into a guy scouting who thought they were poaching. Once it was figured out the guy took off like hell to get his gear to start hunting. :IBCOOL:
Got to pay attention.

Thats funny.....lets hope it is a typo.....not like they haven't made mistakes before such as the permit draws a couple of years ago..........Les

i believe the season is allways the first Saturday after the 10th through the end of the month the 31st

Yep, that's what I was thinking.

don't get all pissed, if you look in years passed it always does this. this year will be short but then the next few will get longer and longer till it tops out then back to a short season, it is just how the dates fall. I know that it is strange that it ends on a saturday but every year that I have hunted no matter what the 31st is always the last day. They use the 31st as a rule no matter what, it just so happens that this year just happens to be a Sat.

If it's a good survival year, with no drought in the fall it won't matter, but if not, a lot greater likelihood of tag soup again this year for a lot of us.
-
They cut the season shorter based on the number of deer harvested the previous during the season, climate, disease and other factors. The biggest factor is the number of reported deer harvested and the days of the season the deer were harvested. A good example is the Winthrop area. They shortened the season a few years back. The highest percentage of bucks were taken were during the last few days of the modern firearm season. A cold snap came in and the bucks hit the rut and a lot of bucks were taken then. Now you can't hunt the mule deer in the rut unless you draw a special tag. My point is, submitting our deer reports isn't helping hunters enjoy a good hunting season. Don't get me wrong, I am not against wildlife management. I'm just against poor management.

I actually kinda like it this way because it gives the deer a little breather in between ML and modern seasons. But they should tack some days on the late buck hunt to make up for it if you ask me :D
-
Well that kinda sucks.

The later opening date has nothing to do with deer populations. It only has to do with the way the dates fall in a particular year, as Antlershed has stated. In my opinion, if they were to base the season length on the number of blacktail deer, they would need to close deer season completely this year.

Man, not sure where you are hunting, but in SW Wash. I can see 30-50 deer a day. Big bucks are hard to find, but that is fine by me, let the road hunters see all the dumb spikes and small forks. Leaves the big ones for me to find.

welcome to the club... They ended archery on a friday this year.

I should let him speak for himself, but..........I don't think Bobcat was referring to anywhere that he has been hunting and not seeing deer. I'm sure he's referring to the lack of deer he has been seing in the woods lately compared to previous years. I know he's out in the woods everyday.

I'd be happy with a one day season- As long as it's open on Halloween ... my last few bucks on the west side were taken on the 31st. So, last year I only hunted 1 day- the 31st... and scored a nice blackie.. :P

My favorite days are the 29th - 31st. Got mine last year on the 30th.
