Title: Dandy Rainbows
Post by: Mtnwalker on May 13, 2020, 08:09:34 PM
A good friend of mine who runs a hatchery on the west side sent me some pictures of the trout he raised this year, pretty impressive! He switched up their feed program and assures me that the change in color is all nutritionally based, no dyes or anything like that. Now I normally turn my nose up at hatchery trout, but word is they eat as good as they look. With all the bad press out there lately related to all things WA fishing, it’s nice to see some good things happening too, however small they may be! Average fish stocked this year was 5 lbs, and they are now in lakes all over the Oly pen. Last pic is normal stocker vs his

Very nice

I caught a westside RB tri poid last year about 3lbs. Cut red and BBQed  It would be great see all hatcheries produce better products.

Big triploids and wild trout are the only ones I’ll eat. If they are anything like the ones we catch on the east side, your in for a treat. Ours are oily so they bbq real nice without drying out.

I guess it’s worth mentioning these are not triploids, just very healthy rainbows. They are reared in natural spring fed ponds at the Satsop Springs hatchery, Steve runs a great operation out there and it just shows how gorgeous a hatchery rainbow can be when properly cared for!

It doesn't surprise me that they end up better when not fed industrial garbage.  It is almost too good to be true there isn't any dye in that food to get that color in the meat.  They look like Costco salmon and we know how those get their color.

The only salmon I have seen with "added color" on the label, I believe they have to list it, has been Atlantic farm raised salmon?

Yeah, those fish are super pale but get a big dose of dye to look normal on the shelf.  I don't think a bunch of farmed trout hit the shelves, but I may be wrong.

They do it with factory beef too, it's unnaturally pink on the outside and then grey once you dig in.

I would guess there is a bunch of shrimp and/or krill in the new feed as opposed to soy, corn, wheat and fish parts waste like the traditional trout chow.

I think you are right. He explained it to me in depth a while back but I’m not the greatest listener
