Title: weather resistant hiking pants ?
Post by: NOCK NOCK on May 18, 2020, 07:19:00 PM
Any body recommend a brand?  $80 or less, weather resistant or waterproof(not lookin for rain gear), preferably quick dry, able to handle average brush without tearing apart.

Eddie Bauer First Ascent. I have about 8 pairs I rotate through for work and hunting. They're the best.

Prana Zions are good, so are Columbia Royce Peak very similar.
The Wrangler Outdoor Performance Cargo Pants $21 at Walmart.

I have been using Columbia lightweight Hunting pants for about 10 years, they hold up fantastically.

Prana? Aren’t those Seattle beatnick bottoms  :chuckle:  Just teasing. If you’re looking for rugged, bombproof, full meal deal warranty hunting and or hiking pants....look at the Sitka Mountain pants (yes, they come other colors besides camo if you wish).

Well, I looked at both Prana and Sitka.  Having the same problem I always do....Sizes don't fit me, I'm a big and tall guy.
NEWS FLASH for manufacturers.....Not every tall person is skinny, and not every fat guy is short.  :bash:

Always a challenge to find 44x34/36

I have a few different Sitka pants and have done well with them in their tall sizes. I’m a 36/36 in Levi’s or wranglers. I wear 36tall in the Sitka pants. My all time favorites are the Timberlines. I have the ascents and mountain pants too but the Timberlines are pretty much always my go-to. I don’t do a lot of early season hunting though. They’re probably a little warm for September.

I would take a look at the wrangler outdoor pants from Walmart. They are really comfy pants that dry fairly fast when they get damp. I have the 90%pants, the mountain pants and the ascent pants and I end up wearing the wranglers the most.

Yes sir, the Timberlines are the Mountain Pants on steroids. I have both and really, besides an ultra lite pair of very early season Kuius, I don’t have a need  for any other pants in my gear box.

Yeah. The ultralight pants for me are the Sitka Ascents.

You will have a better selection at the individual stores.
I found that the online Walmart store does not show what is at the brick and mortar stores well.

I own sitka, first lite and KUIU and to me the KUIU pants are the best pants I have worn of the 3 in the mountains

My go to everyday and hiking pants are Outdoor Research Voodoo pants for DWR protection. Super comfy and durable. Good luck.

When you're in wet brush there's not a pant out there that will keep the water out for more than 100 yards other than rain pants.  Invest in really good rain pants before dropping big bucks on pants.

No plans on spending big bucks on britches. This thread went fairly quickly to the whole sitka, kuiu, gotta spend hundreds of dollars on pants. I don't play that game.

Your prolly right buglebrush, just hoping for something that might work better than what I got.

I honestly wear cheap poly blend slacks from JCPenny or the like.  They are quite, don't bind, and dry out quick.

yup!

some of the options that have been given are exactly what you pay for..no thanks been there done that and are garbage cheap pants. I also have never bought a single piece of clothing ever at listed price .All of my pants have been put thru hell and hundreds if not thousands of miles. I still have the first pair of sitka ascents I bought 10 years ago

I voted Prana because the OP said hiking pants. If he said hunting pants I would of went with a Kuiu recommendation.

If I'm hiking, scouting, or working cams my Prana's do the job. They also serve as a good Sept elk hunting pant. The kuiu pants come out when it gets cold and wet.  :twocents:

Outdoor research has some bad azz pants, the alpine in green, but they are too damn tall for me.  The only frustrating thing with OR is their sizing, they don't like short, fat people!!

Beware.  I've been using the Wranglers for a few years and they've been great.  I went in a few weeks ago to buy a new pair.  You can't currently try them on as the dressing rooms are close due to the 'Rona.  "No biggie", I thought.  I bought a pair with a 30" inseam.  Too short.  Took them back to exchange for a 32"inseam.  WalMart is not taking returns at this time, due to the 'Rona.  Pissed me off, but I decided to buy the 32" inseam pair anyway and just return the 30" pair later.  Got home to find that the 32" inseam pants were 2 inches shorter than the 30" pair!    :bash:  Now I'm waiting for REI to open so I can bite the bullet and pay significantly more for something that fits.

Prana, but I just looked on their website and I see they make a 36" inseam pant. They don't seem to sell them in stores, at least not at REI and with their L XL M sizing system, I don't like to risk what fits and what doesn't. I have found that I always end up fitting somewhere between a L and XL. Wish I could try some on somewhere with the right inseam.

What the heck.
The cool Prana pants are the stretch Zion pants right? I was right...no 36" inseam.

Amazon has the waist/length sizing options up to 36". Prana has always fit true to size for me.

I like outdoor research ferrosi pants. Very light weight, dry fast, and feel like wearing sweatpants. Not great for late fall or winter tho, but maybe doable with layers.

I have had terrible experience with Sitka. A couple weeks archery hunting and Sitka pants were shredded and sent in they asked if I wanted them to “recycle “ or PAY for them to ship back! I am with you most of that stuff is a rip off. Wish I could wear my green woolies year round. Kuiu is better but mine are pretty tore up. I am going to check out Walmart wrangler 👍

Kings XKG series pants super tough and stretchy water resistant come in tall sizes I’m 6’8” and the talls fit perfect solid or camo colors and different weights from early to late season have ran them hard and they will last no rips or snags

I have a couple pair of 5.11 Traverse stretchy pants and they are tough, light and dry very quickly.  You can spray them with a commercial waterproofing and it will keep them dry for a period of time but I don't worry about it as they dry so quickly.

Be warned also, the Zion come in skinny fit and regular fit.  When I very first tried them on at the store, I accidentally grabbed the skinny fit, went to the dressing room and could barely get the dang things to my thighs.  I thought no way can everyone love these pants.  When I was walking out the gal there asked me how they fit, I said, well I got them just past my knees and that was that.  She giggled and asked to see them, then she said I had grabbed the skinny fit, went and got the regular and been in love ever since.

My goto for hiking around in mild weather is outdoor research,  I get them half price.

recently got me a pair of wrangler outdoor performance and now it's a tossup!   I like the pocket arrangement on the wranglers much better.  The OR pockets suck, barely get half a hand in them.

They finally came in today!  When I was ordering it said "free 2 day shipping", and then after I ordered it said 6-8 days.  Maybe I misunderstood something?  Anyway, they fit really nice (not the skinny jean look), and look well made.

+1 for the Prana Stretch Zions.  They're by FAR the most comfortable hiking pants of the couple dozen different options I've tried over the years.

I use the Zions for everything unless it's pouring rain, in which case I throw on my OR Foray rain pants, or if it's consistently below freezing, in which case I prefer my OR Cirque II softshell pants.

that usually means they SHIP them within 2 days, not that they ARRIVE within two days.
