Post by: tgomez on May 25, 2020, 07:02:32 PM
What date will WDFW release the special drawing results for deer and elk? If anyone knows I would appreciate it, thank you.

Washington doesn’t have a set date like Wyoming, just a general time frame of before June 31st.

With modern day computer programs and today's technology, they should be able to get us the results in a few days.  Not over a month like they do each year.

...and then when theres a screw up and they yank everyone's results for a redraw we all come on here and scream bloody murder!

I dont care what day they post the draw results in June or how many times they have to run the draw as long as I finally end up with an OIL tag when they post the results. That's not asking for too much, right?  :chuckle: I'd prefer a sheep tag, but I'm not that picky!

Last year was drawn I believe on June 12.  Hoping for a similar date this year.

Wonder if there’s a way to find out the number of applicants?! That kinda determines the draw date

That would be cool, I honestly don't think as many will put in because of the pandemic, as well as delayed hunting and fishing in this state. I could be wrong and way off, look at me I haven't put in for elk for 20 years and never for deer until this season. I'd like to know the number of applicants as well. We won't find that out until next years pamphlet is released I take it.

As crazy as the Weyco permit sales were this year I have a feeling there will be a big jump in permit apps because people will be staying closer to home instead of heading to other states.

With this ^^^ and archery cow draws on the eastside I was thinking a lot of people are gonna be hunting the westside and ghost pointing.

How does that work ? Did they make a mistake or did you call and say something and they gave you a timeframe to fix it.? Been my understanding for long time once it's in it in that's it

Id say two days max should be plenty of time to get the draw done. One to draw and one to validate winners and points.

The way I see it, once the draw deadline has passed you shouldn’t be able to touch your app. At 1201 am draw runs.

Forgot the deadline and you don’t get to apply this year. But, submit wrong units/choices and you have another week to decide? Doesn’t make much sense to me after having a month to get it right.. It also slows the whole system for everyone hoping for a fast turn around.

We had a person familiar with the draw process posting on here several years ago, and I believe he said the week after the deadline is used to contact people who made mistakes on their applications so they could be fixed.

I think they should move on and ghost you if you made a mistake. The month we have to submit takes away any kind of excuse imo and if you can’t read the numbers next to hunt choices, how are you supposed to count points in the field

Nope, wrong on that one. If I screw up I’ll be the first to accept the consequences of my actions. I’ve missed a year here and there not applying and wasn’t by choice. I just forgot. It is what it is.

How can someone make a mistake? If you pick the wrong weapon type for the hunt it won't let you submit and you have too pick the correct one. That used to happen years back but they fixed that.

if you bought a concert ticket a month in advance and it says on the ticket venue starts at 7PM and you got to the concert 2 hours late, you expect the band to wait for you to make sure you get what you paid for?

You can change your choices up to the deadline so why have a deadline. If you messed up you messed up it's a pretty simple process these days too submit a application and pick the right hunt.

I would have to agree with the guys that say once the deadline hits, it should be closed and the process to get the draws done started. The application period is already late enough in the year and every few days earlier we get the results back, the easier it is to work out travel plans, vacation etc for any tags drawn.  :twocents:

What if someone wanted to change tags (before the deadline) and it took until a week after the deadline for wdfw to respond and cancel that tag?

Should the hunter suffer because wdfw is slow ro respond to inquirys for changes?

It really doesn't bother me either way, sounds like in that scenario they could change to points only for the year?  It just seems different than a lot of other aspects of life, where if you miss a deadline you are out of luck and someone else that was on top of things gets the benefit of meeting the deadline.

The what if game. What if it was simple. You waited too long to change your mind and missed the deadline. Next year you won’t make that mistake and everyone sees results a week to 10 days earlier every year

Any fake reasons for not abiding by the set deadline and other delays just leads to suspicions about the eventual drawing being fair and above reproach.

The reason for the delay was/is because people forgot to apply but had purchased the application before the deadline, last minute “Larry’s” I guess but I think I was told that process only takes a few days.

I feel like its good on wdfw for accomodating people while still consistently getting results out before they say they are going to.

Not really sure why people expect them to happen instantly when wdfw always shpws they will be done before the end of june. Its just not that big a deal.

The earlier the better for me because I need to make plans, especially for early archery tags. When we find out middle to late june that doesn't leave much time so I personally think its a big deal.

Not trying to argue but just stating how I feel since we all have plenty of time and notice as to when the application deadline is every year

Key word “before” They should help right up to the deadline. Afterwards it should be tough luck. Again the app submission period alone is a month. If that’s not enough time to get your stuff figured out I’m not sure you should apply in the first place. Why would someone wait until even the week before? You know when the deadline is, you know that WDFW is going to be busy that week, you know that this is a bad year for communication due to this virus, and you know how not to be “that guy” by getting your apps done on time. But yet some still fail. I don’t get it and the excuses can be endless when dealing with people who can’t comply with simple directions and deadlines they’ve missed.

Simple fact is ZERO states do draws in a day. In fact wA is among the very fastest at draw turn around. There are checks and balances that need to happen. If they didn't and there was a glitch then all you same complainers would be lighting the torches and grabbing the pitchforks.

And come on Adam, 3 months isn't enough time to figure out a hunt? You drawn plenty of tags in the past and I don't remember you not being able to hunt any of them because draws weren't out in time  :dunno: sounds like some are just looking for something to complain about. If draws taking 3 weeks is your biggest issue then count your blessing.

And just to clarify, I'd also LOVE to have draws in a day, but it's not happening anywhere in North America so blasting wdfw, who are some of the most efficient, isn't very fair. I'm max points for deer and oils LabChamp :'(

Lots of employers have PTO submission periods. Often early in the year. Some will even deny PTO requests outside of their submission time frame. Or you may get squeezed out because a coworker already took the time off for their own vaca when your hunt occurs. Time can be of the essence!

Labchamp it’s because some people hunt other states than here and WA takes a back seat to pretty much everything I do. I never screwed up on my app, I bought a archery tag and thought I could apply for a certain tag with it and could not. This was days before the deadline well with all this crap going and no offices open I decided to email them about how to go about switch to a rifle tag. I was not worried about it and really gave 2 s&@$! . Well the deadline passed and 7 days later I get a email saying they canceled my deer tag and I could select which one I want and to contact what choices for the draw and I had until June 2nd. So I’ll go on not being able to not count points in the field , well usually don’t have to when you draw a quality tag and maybe I’ll draw 6th oil or quality tag in WA ;)

And just to clarify, I'd also LOVE to have draws in a day, but it's not happening anywhere in North America so blasting wdfw, who are some of the most efficient, isn't very fair. I'm max points for deer and oils LabChamp :'(

Yup I hear ya. Will probably never get drawn but I buy my lotto ticket. Just to clarify my stance I have nothing against WDFW. They’re doing their best. We can all help make their lives easier by doing our part

Once the state does their checks and balances and then moves to the draw it should not take more than 24 hours. NV is a perfect example. The draw was done from 8-10 am or so and around midnight those results began to upload.

I wasn't saying the draw time should be a day, or even shorter than it is. My point was giving additional time after a deadline to make changes seems unnecessary given that we have ample time to read the regs, do our research and submit our apps.

As for the 3 months, I work a job that has multiple deadlines throughout the year, one of which is July 15th and one is September 1st. The earlier I know my results, from any state I apply in helps me balance my workload and make a plan.

I'm betting they are up.  Every state in the west has seen a jump in apps...even states that had apps due during some real craziness and uncertainty with covid.   :dunno:

A bunch of people got checks from the government, both the $1200/500 as well as the extra $600 a month plus normal unemployment.  They had cash and were home thinking about what to do when we get back to normal.  That seems like a scenario for hunting and fishing plans to get made.  In state apps are much less expensive than out of state, so it seems plausible to me more people are playing in more categories.

Yeah all of the private tree farm permits on the westside with the exception of some of the Hancock pierce/king county stuff sold out in almost record time...Aberdeen, Peell Weyerhaeuser etc.  My guess is that tag apps will follow the same trend.  With every guy that drops theres two to take their place and "fill the freezer" to prepare for the "end of the world".

people may not have been working but majority of people I know are spending way less in their daily lives then they do when they were working. No gas money, lunches while at work, eating out at night etc. I also think just as many people, if not more applied this year because they needed something to anticipate and look forward to. So much negativity, doom and gloom and frustration. Dropping some coin on a hope and a prayer for a dream hunt could be worth the investment

From my perspective, the other thing is that when you are deprived of the ability to go out and recreate I really developed a better appreciation for it.  In my case, you don't know what you got until it's gone holds true.  Resident special draws are cheap, you can apply for a bunch for the cost of the tank of gas you didn't use to commute to work the first week of the shut in.

Only the c4 powder pre workout mix. They defiled and almost ruined it when they made it carbonated and in a can!

Reminds me in a way of the last time I had a red bull. I dislike the stuff but had to make a 5 hour roundtrip drive after working 10 hours and a friend had left one in our fridge. I hammered it down on my way over stevens pass and within about 20 minutes the gas started and it was brutal! I remember texting my ex when i stopped to get fuel that Red bull doesn't give you wings, it gives you gas!

Ingredients wise, yes. They are a pre work out. It's the same ingredients as pre work out that you mix yourself. They also have twice the caffeine as red bull.

You guys just don't have a seasoned enough gut or high enough caffeine tolerance. I used to be like you guys but with lots of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice you too could be able to make it to 2 or 3 bang before the eradic heart beat and shortness of breath. I also think some of it has to do with the pure champion blood coursing through my veins.

I used to work for this company, not the Diet Choke guys, but I won't say who it was. :chuckle:  I worked service and we would be called in overnight at restaurants when they were closed to rip the Choke junk out and put our stuff in and to work the day and night combo shifts we would drink a sixer of Mt. Dew topped off with a few cans of Skoal.  This was back when I was the newbie and would get sent on chew runs where I would be given $2 hard cash and expected to bring back the change.

One thing I was told recently, the more people that log on their website to check when stuff does start happening, really slows up the process and does bring it to a halt.  I know one little post won’t change a thing when it starts, but patience on that day would sure help us all.

I hear the Losers Lounge just received a truck load of Camo facemasks, complete with tear-outs for beer drinking and cigar smoking.  Now, lets hope they have the shelves stocked back up and the coolers full of cold beer.  With the COVID lockdown the alcohol sales were through the roof, I hope management was aware and replenished in time, we are getting close to our annual get-together with long faces and sobbing eyes ready to bitch about everything that is wrong with hunting in this state.

I also hear they have forgone the 50% capacity rules, as they know we will all have guns and enforcement may be tough.

They need to do away with more then one choice. Pick a area.  Everyyear I meet guys who drew some unit they never hunted before and are disappointed.  Takes time to learn a new unit.
Title: Re: Tag Drawing Results
Post by: bobcat on June 09, 2020, 10:27:32 AM
Even with only one choice people will apply for areas they haven't hunted before, and there's nothing wrong with that. I've drawn several permits for units I hadn't previously hunted. I don't see the big deal. If someone isn't successful because they didn't have experience in the unit who cares. That's their choice.

My comment about never stepping foot in the unit was not because I have any issue with it but because they seem to be the ones that post something early on. I personally have applied for units that I had little to no knowledge about. There are tons of units that you wouldn't just hunt with an OTC tag but would with a permit so you apply. Its actually a great way to learn a new unit if you are lucky enough to draw because scouting a new unit for an OTC generally isn't nearly as fun or in depth as a permit holder scouting. The anticipation and excitement of holding a permit is plenty of motivation to spend the extra time and money really learning a unit versus just finding a spot or two in the summer to give it a try that fall.  :twocents:

:yeah:

Not to mention, with the amount of information that is easily available these days - identifying areas to apply and then figuring out where/how to hunt if drawn...makes applying and hunting for areas you have never set foot in much more feasible and successful.

WDFW is following major store chains due to covid. The first hour of special permit selection will be reserved for those applicants over 65 years of age. The selection process usually takes about 59 minutes. Sorry kids.   :hello:

just keep watching this thread is probably the easiest, don’t log on Wdfw every 5 minutes, that just makes it harder to get results posted. No drawing today so you have time to relax.

I believe covid has eliminated volunteer witnesses this year.  It will all be done and verified in house.

I can say that after being a witness it is all on the up and up.  There is no funny business.  They do way more to verify everything is correct than I would have thought they needed to do.

They are very concerned about making the process as fair and transparent as they can.  They also go above and beyond on making sure everyone has a fair and equal opportunity.

Every year they have a ton of questions and issues that have to be dealt with right at the entry deadline.

I know people get irritated, "why are they delaying the draw for someone who waited until the last minute and had issues?"  But if it were you that the system crashed on or there was an error you would want them to make it right.

From what I have seen they make every effort to get this right.

Best of luck to you all in the draw.

Hope... I used to have hope when I started putting in at age 10.

I hope I draw before I die.  I'm 33.

If it takes you 10 years to draw a stupid multiseason elk tag (and costs about the same as an Idaho tag when you do draw it), then my hopes of drawing a trophy bull, deer or an OIL tag are basically nil.

I have a couple of questions. How does a person get selected to be a witness?  Does anyone know who was selected this year? It appears that some of you know how it works.

Maybe WDFW will give me something for my birthday the 11th. I think my odds of drawing a Washington moose tag is way up this year being I already have a Colorado moose tag in my pocket .
I'm sorry to say, it's going to be my Birthday gift on the 19th! But best of luck on your Colorado hunt!

I'm going to start checking tomorrow. I think tomorrow is the first day it could realistically happen. Last year it was on a Wednesday (June 12.) The two years prior to that it was on Thursday.

I'll wait for all of you guys to check multiple times over the next week or so. Then I'll go figure out what OIL tag I drew after you guys post on here the results are up.  :chuckle:

They need to do away with more then one choice. Pick a area.  Everyyear I meet guys who drew some unit they never hunted before and are disappointed.  Takes time to learn a new unit.

with that logic then nobody should be applying for any of the OIL tags or most of the quality deer and elk tags. Hell I apply outta state in multiple states in units I have never stepped in

Westsiders get drawn first, then what is left goes to the east side guys since they hate the coasties so much.  I've worked that out with the brass at wdfw.

Well bad news again.

The Sheep tags just tested positive for Covid. Testing the moose tags now but its highly likely these tags will have to go back to phase 1 and wont be allowed to hang out with people that aren't in their immediate family.

Hate is a strong word. But I don’t see what you think is changed with your statement. That’s the way it has always worked.
I “help” (and by help I mean point directly at the moose they should shoot) coasties every year and very few locals can draw the tags. Guess it helps to have 10x the people on your side of the state.

My fellow Washingtonians the pandemic that has spread through our great state is not over.  Therefore, by decry from my office, the office of the powerful and all knowing, we will delay the release of the special permits until the science and data supports the release to Washingtonians at which time there will be a phased release.  The science and data suggests that all Washingtonians will find out (eventually) that my plan which is supported by science and data will eventually be released in phases.  Washingtonians now is not the time to give up.  The science and data will tell us that we will have a drawing...….blah blah blah blah blah

A know a guy drew his bull permit, he went to zero.  It’s safe to say if you have zero points in your bull , quality elk and quality deer, you drew. The new back door.  The bull category was first, then the quality elk, things should get posted officially in a few hours if we don’t crash the site.

Just got off the phone with Phelony at the WDFW. Phelony says that those checking for point changes have overloaded the system causing all points to vanish. Drawing will now be delayed 4-6 weeks while they try to restore the point system needed for the draw. Those that overloaded the point system will be automatically excluded from the draw. The WDFW knows who the perps are since you logged into the system.

I guess I kissed the Golden Goose!  Quality Dayton modern rifle elk tag for me last year (ended up being a super tough hunt and killed a decent 5X5)  This year I drew a modern rifle Bethel bull tag and a Black Rock Ranch cow tag.  Bummer to draw two elk permits in one year but I guess I have dealt with worse problems.  I hope there are some decent numbers in Bethel.  Haven't really hunted that GMU before but I have spent a little time in Umtanam and a lot of time in Manastash.  Will be a fun time scouting out and learning the Bethel GMU this summer and early fall.

Wow
Exactly my thought!  WOW!!!  Probably last year I will hunt Washington for elk being that this year and last year zeroing out all my elk points.  I also drew a special bull elk permit in Montana this year along with a special permit mule deer buck tag in Montana.  In the next week wyoming should come out and I should draw a antelope buck tag, antelope doe tag, and a region K deer tag.  Going to be another busy year again for me.  I'm starting to hope that I don't draw the Montana cow permit I put in for.  Should get those results around the 15th or so.

Colokum quality archery for me and my buddy. First draw in 21 years for me and 18 for him. Very excited.

If any other colokum quality tags get drawn here, let's coordinate. Not sure how many more chances we'll have at this tag going forward....

It doesn't work that way.  You will be re-zero'd in both categories.  You can hunt both hunts but the minute you kill an elk the other permit becomes void because you can only kill one elk per year.  I drew a bull tag and a cow tag this year and I'm in the same predicament that you are in.  You cant return a tag and get your points back.

Well that sucks.  These are identical tags in the same unit at the same time.  I'll probably be pissing up a rope, but plan on calling them to discuss.  Kind of unfairly eliminates one tag for other people in the drawing.  There's hardly any tags left to draw as it is!

I honestly don't even know how they can call the Toutle unit  "quality"  anymore.  The herds there are a fraction of what they used to be and many have hoof rot.  There are some elk left, but I wouldn't go in with super high expectations.  Don't mean to be a Debbie downer, just a heads up, I don't think I'd pass on many bulls you may find.

deer or elk? My dad drew disabled any buck tag.  I’ve hunted it before and it’s not like it was many years ago, but still a cool place to be in. You can bear and cougar hunt in there even if you tag out, do it if you can.

Just saw on another post you got elk, wait till you see the elk feeding areas, pretty cool. The really big bulls get chased off before we get in there, but you could still get a decent bull.  Don’t set your sites too high on score, enjoy the scenery and the anticipation of seeing some cool animals. No scouting, or camping.

In 2017 I drew both quality and bull elk, they told me I had to keep them both, but could only use one.  This is a crappy policy that needs to be changed!  Not only do you lose points, somebody else doesn't get to use the tag that you can't use.  You would think that you could pick the one you wanted and maybe the other tag could be donated to a veteran, or youth :dunno:

Should be a good year for me with a long season.  After being selected for a multi-season permit I got an antlerless muzzleloader deer and an antlerless deer 65 and over for modern rifle.  Throw in a late any deer for late muzzleloader and I will be able to hunt until Dec 15.  There will be fresh venison in the freezer.

With all the money you've invested, I think I'd throw away the two antlerless permits and save your tag for the late muzzleloader any deer hunt. That's too bad you lost points in all those categories in the same year but that's how it goes sometimes.

Go figure, I had 0 points on the muzzleloader draw. This might be a good opportunity with a muzzleloader though, I've never taken one that way.

You had 1 point.  You cant draw with 0.  The first time you buy the spp, youre in the drawing with 1.  A person who had 0 hasnt applied.

Entiat late archery tag. I'm stoked.....son not so much. "Lucky" was the word he used when I sent him the WDFW screen shot. Probably didn't help that his screen shot was full of "not selected" I'll take it. 13 points

Food for thought.    464 quality elk tags in our state for 34,049 applicants, only 1,584 were ghost points.

259 bull tags for 27,254 applicants, 2,043 were ghost point apps.
I did the math earlier today talking to my dad about this. That means that on average each individual should expect one quality elk tag every 65 years and 1 bull tag every 106 years. Those numbers are brutal

Father inlaw drew quality elk in toutle for archery he's pumped
I honestly don't even know how they can call the Toutle unit  "quality"  anymore.  The herds there are a fraction of what they used to be and many have hoof rot.  There are some elk left, but I wouldn't go in with super high expectations.  Don't mean to be a Debbie downer, just a heads up, I don't think I'd pass on many bulls you may find.

Thanks Debbie for  the update  he and i know lots about the area and current conditions . Some people care about th opportunity as much as the quality I'm sure he will be happy to just go. Thanks again Debbie

Toutle is fun unit, and he will see some elk for sure.  I drew it for cow last year and only hunted it twice I think during the late season.  Got into elk both days but didnt kill one.

Yes he will have a blast and at the end of the day that's all that matters

The older I get the less I care about the size of animal or even if I fill my tag. Have fun and enjoy the opportunity. Should be an awesome hunt

I had recently set a email to a representative of Hancock and haven't heard anything back yet in a few days. My general enquiry was to see if they have any available permits or if they are going to continue to keep the area closed due to COVID-19? I figured someone on here might have some information and figured it was worth asking. I was fortunate enough to draw a rifle bull permit in the White River and was more interested in having the permit as a back up to have more area available to hunt.
