Title: Colorado Elk/Muley hunting
Post by: tbrady on June 01, 2020, 10:02:08 AM
Hi All-

It's been about 25 years since I last hunted in CO and am hoping to make it back there this fall.  I have no points or anything, just hoping to get an OTC elk/deer tag.  When I was last there the muley tag was about 3 days long and overlapped with my elk tag.

I'm just starting to research but if anyone has any input/suggestions on where to go, camp etc it would be greatly appreciated!  My family and I just spent the last week in CO and while trying to talk my wife in to moving there she suggested maybe just try hunting there instead. :)

thanks
tim

fyi, there is no otc deer hunting. It is 100% by permit only and the application deadline has come and gone.

As for elk, the opportunities are endless. I always tell people to just pick an area based on preferred hunting style and habit/terrain that they enjoy. There are elk everywhere in CO so pick an area that will please you. I recommend that because otc elk in CO is insanely popular and all otc units are busy so if you pick an area you would enjoy regardless of success it can ease the frustrations of CO elk hunting  :twocents:

Thanks Karl, that's good to know right out of the gate!  We looked at several homes for sale (mostly on the western slopes) while we there and saw a lot of elk and deer while travelling.  Just trying to figure out if we actually want to live there or not, they have a state income tax and the mild climate we have in WA is preferred over the hot summers and cold winters there (at least for my wife!) but man... everywhere we went I felt like we were in a natl park.  Absolutely beautiful country.

I hear that! I'm so in love with CO it's not even funny. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of their politics but I'd take them over WA in a heart beat.
