Post by: Huntbear on April 12, 2009, 03:02:51 PM
My nephew p-ohana went to see his dad and family in Hawaii, and went deer hunting, here are the pics he asked me to post for him.  He will get on and add the story.  Enjoy.

Hey that is pretty cool...from the pictures...I don't see any hula skirts, surf boards, or a beach,(lol), He could have taken it at a ranch in Texas...The best thing is his loyaty to the "Mariners".  :IBCOOL:

Seriously, that is pretty cool. Is he going to mount it? I had a thaught about the cost of shipping the meat and mount back home? A buddy of mine caught a marlin in Cabo San Lucas, and after everything was done and he had his stuffed fish back home, it ended up being about $3,500.00. Great trophy and hopefully a great story. Thanx

My uncle, cousin and I went out last wensday on the Island Maui. We started out hunting about 1000am, We walked in a circle for about 1 mile we saw about 30 does and no bucks at all, not even small ones. My cousins suggested we try a spot down the road, She should know we where hunting on a cattle ranch that her boyfriends family owns. After my uncle drops us off we slowly walk to where my uncle will pick us up. After about 30 Min's I jump 2 bucks the first buck is still growing its antlers(the only stipulation my cousin gives me is I can't shoot anything that is still growing antlers, everything else is far game) the 2nd buck is in hard velvet and I miss a 80yd shot as its angling away from me. It was definitely bigger than the one in the pictures. After we linkup with the truck my cousin pulls out the Hibachi and starts cooking Kalibi ribs. After lunch we are driving to another area and we get out to walk around and spot a small buck and a doe. His rack is about 12-15 inches in lengh, but I'm holding out for something better. My cousin tells me that there are some monster bucks around. We load back up in the truck and go to the next spot. We start walking towards the ocean, after a mile down I link up with my cousin to head back to the truck. Its about 1530 and nothing when we think we hear the deer talking kind of like elk do. As we walk in the general direction I spot a doe about 400yds towards the ocean. We keep looking in that direction and we keep seeing does and fawns crossing from left to right in front of us. I tell her lets sneak closer and see what else comes out. We sneak to about 200yds of where the deer are moving. I'm on the right side of the ridge and my cousin is on the left side. After about 50 does and fawns go by I wave my cousin over to me and she asked me if I saw the big hard horn buck I say no I didn't we are talking in normal voices when some more does are coming out of the draw to our left. To the left of the does I see a bigger deer and as I get the gun on him I can see its a buck but he looks small and hes looking right at me. I figure its getting late so I better shoot he. He goes right down. I'm shooting my dads 7x57 with 165gr NP reloads. 3 more bucks come out that are bigger than the one I shot and I get ready to shoot number 2 but they don't give me a clear shot. As we get to my buck we realize hes bigger than I thought. I realize I was looking at his eye guards when I shot him not the whole rack. After gutting him out I then had to drag him 1 mile up him to the truck. The pics where taken at the truck. All the meat went to my dads friend who is going to make sausage out of him, the antlers are hanging in my garage, I just wrapped it in suran wrap and put it in my bagage. All I have to do know is figure out how to clean/boil the skull without damaging the velvet. It looked like he was ready to rub off the velvet in the next couple of days. The left antler is 28 inches long and the right is 25 inches long. It was a great hunt, and I got my largest axis deer to date.

Nice work.  Have you hunted blacktail there too?  I know they have blacktails on Kauai...

definitely non-native.  I had a guy tell me one time if it doesn't swim or fly, it is not native to the islands.  I saw a flock of turkeys on the big island in February and a goat or sheep-like creature on Kauai.  I alos saw on a hunting show where they hunted feral cows but I don't remember which island.

No I haven't hunted blacktails on Kauai. I've hunted Pigs, feral goats, axis deer and mouflon, mostly on Maui and Lanai. Also while hunting on the ranch I saw about 30 pheasent rosters, and a bunch of turkeys. I've never hunted turkeys but I saw the biggest  gobbler I've ever seen in person or on TV. My cousin said they don't hunt them at all, they have the run of the place. All in all it was a great vacation, and a good hunt. Next time my wife we be the one getting to shoot a deer.

So, was this hunt on private land, or is there public land hunting avail on Hawaii?

I'm headed there for a mini-vacation with my wife for our 30th anniversary and would love to spend a day hunting axis deer...

Great looking deer you bagged! Congrats!!! I hear the axis deer taste terrific.

On Maui its private land only. On Lanai there is hunts available year round. A friend of my father runs the private land hunts on Lanai. His name is Gary Onuma I think. I don't know the prices for a one day hunt, but I know they pick you up at the airport and go straight to there range and confirm your zero. They pick you up in the morning from your Hotel and drop you off when hunting is completed. You get 3 deer 1 buck and 2 does or 3 does. They cape, and freeze the meat and have it at the airport/boat dock when you leave. He's the first person I've seen bone out an animal by the muscle. The only thing left when hes done is the skeleton. If you have any questions PM me and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge
