Title: Best all around home self Defense options for the lady's
Post by: danderson on June 30, 2020, 09:34:59 AM
looking for opinions and pictures as to the best all round self  defense firearms for my lady, excluding hand guns.  She has a full size Remington 870 12 gauge but its just to much for her to handle, she's on the small side and doesn't have the strength to handle a full size firearm with confidence,  We live in the mountains with the nearest neiobhor 1/2 mile down the road. I was thinking about a pump 20 gauge with pistol grip or a  AR-15, plus  pros and cons for calibers,  or should  I modify her shot gun or build one, also what are the legalities of home defense firearms that are not intended for hunting like barrel length's, and shells that a shot gun may hold, OO buck, slugs, turkey loads ?

This might be an unpopular comment but, What about a taser?

I’m not arguing against a 18” 20ga, just suggesting a backup that might avoid some of the legal challenges you asked about.

Everybody who carries should have a nonlethal weapon also.  (Ie. spray) That way when you shoot someone you can argue it was necessary and you did have options. Also some just need a spray or jolt. :chuckle:

I'd stick with a shotgun, but for something outside of shotguns since you asked for suggestions:

A 9mm SBR. Teach her how to shoot it. Put a red dot on, point and shoot. Pretty much zero recoil so she can stay on target for follow ups, huge mag capacity.

Do you have kids? If so, you don't have to worry so much about rounds going through walls.

There is no legal consideration, lethal force is lethal force.  That said, if somebody shoots someone else, they could end up in court and the jury makes the call.  Much has been written about how the jury might take in the situation and many believe that a standard shotgun could be perceived in a better light than a decked out tacti-cool shotgun.  You don't know for sure, but it's never going to hurt you to have the more innocuous looking gun.

If it were me, I would have a semi-auto 20 gauge right out of the box with wood stocks.  It's about as effective and easy to operate as any firearm out there and has tremendous capabilities to stop bad guys.

As a bonus, you can take it out hunting or shooting clays.

if you get some light recoil rounds, look at the KelTec pump options.

a nice semi-auto choice if you can find one is the Bull Pups, they are small and have pistol grip

if wanting the smaller guage. Look at the Henry X, its a .410 lever gun. it can hold 6 rounds of self defense shells

Small frame wheel gun like a 38
And agree with the spray As well
If your concerned with 2 legged problems
A can of black flag wasp spray works well I hear
And can be kept in plain sight for a fast grab

Good double barrel shotgun. Pops open, drop in the shells, lock yourself in any room and if someone forces entry squeeze off the two shots and call the morgue.  Shot size from about 5's down will work fine at that short range, modify the gun if you want but not necessary.  Have a brother  who has been doing crime scene investigations for many years-his advice is to keep it as simple as possible.  He can recount many instances of handguns being fired into ceilings and floors and other types of weapons being misloaded or jammed  in the heat of the moment. Remember most burglars don't want a confrontation , make noise, let them know you're home and police have been called and 99 times out of 100 they'll flee. Use of force is an absolute last resort

I agree with the SBR 9mm....Even an AR in a pistol caliber (or even a AR pistol), Keltec Sub2000, CMR30, AK (AK pistol), PS90, bull pup style in any caliber, and even a hipoint rifle!!!! The best is train her to shoot anything and everything that is available in the house. Both my daughters are well under 100lbs, but them plus the wife can shoot/handle any weapon I have, it doesn't mean they like to, it means if the situation arises they can.

Light, fast, accurate, carries lots of rounds.......I like the following for women in a home defense situation.

1.  AR pistol / SBR if shouldered in 300 blackout with a can.  Clearly the can is optional but it sure makes it nice to shoot subsonic rounds indoors without losing your hearing and becoming disoriented.

2.  keltec Sub2000 in 40 s&w with a 22 round magazine.  Put a red dot on top and it is super accurate to 100 yards.

3.  Tactical 20 gauge pump shotgun with collapsible stock and extended tube.

I'll give you an example of what goes down in a very heated situation. True story my brother investigated. 5 policemen in an adjoining motel room were listening in to the room next door as an undercover narc was dealing with a known violent dealer. As the situation worsened the undercover narc gave the emergency password and pulled his own weapon. He shot 4 times at the dealer, hitting him once. The other 5 burst into the room and started shooting. They managed to hit the undercover cop once, and totally missed the dealer. 3 of the 5 police weapons jammed, one emptied his gun and the 5th with a double barrel shotgun finally  contained the dealer. These were all trained, experienced policemen. In a heated, adrenaline flowing situation it is critical that you keep it as simple and deadly as possible. Stay away from the fancy stuff, even a pump shotgun can be difficult for a relatively inexperienced shooter to deal with in the heat of the moment.

Our home defense is a Remington 1100 extended mag, flashlight attached, with OO buckshot. Auto has less recoil than pump, but with buckshot it still has recoil. It was a bit much for my Misses but after really practicing a few different times she does just fine.... I wouldn't want to have her shooting at me these days..... Point is, it was Too Big until a lot of practice, now she's super confident with it....
It works for us....  :twocents:

Ding ding, winner!  Nothing sais "I know you're there, time to leave or face the consequences" like a few big dogs charging the fence and/or a house entrance door (good to have the doggie door to maximize the big dog, slime ball deterrent method effectiveness).  And yes, the audible "chunk, chunk" of chambering a round in a pump shotgun drives the message home in earnest.

I'm a strong proponent for small 38 revolvers for self defense.  Almost nothing to get wrong or malfunction. Point pull trigger.  Its my wifes carry choice and most of the time mine also and I have plenty of options.

If you are worried about recoil, this is the perfect SD/HD option, especially in the country, where it could double as varmint control, I'd imagine.

If your wife feels comfortable operating her 870, go to a 20 gauge 870 with a short barrel or even cut one off to 18"(or 181/2" to be safe) Some people might even depart upon hearing the action being worked prior to the big boom.  :sry: The biggest thing is to make sure she feels confident with whatever she is using and is willing to do what needs to be done.

You don’t aim a shotgun, you point it.  That’s what people that are far better than I say.

My worry about rifles is that they can go through several walls.  Hitting the bad guy is important, equally so, if not more is not hitting anyone else.

Skip all of the above and get her a series of professional home defense training lined up.  Her size and supposed strength is irrelevant to nearly every platform available at nearly every gun shop.  She should be able to pick up any gun she can get her hands on and defend the homestead.

If you're really concerned about her defending her self inside the home, get whatever it is she's going to have readily available and put a suppressor on it.  Then have her train (see above) with those firearms, with subsonic ammo.  Nothing rings your bell like shooting with no hearing protection, even more so indoors.

Pump has the risk of short shucking but semi has the risk of double shot for an inexperienced user.

I don't think gauge matters much since you can buy low recoil shells.

I think practice is more important than pump or semi.

You don't want someone fumbling with either in a heated moment.

If it is someone that rarely shoots then get the coach.

Current taser technology allows for multiple shots and reload.

Again, not arguing against a shotgun or rifle, I prefer to have options.

Agreed. I was thinking on the 870 youth don't really need high base to dump someone at close range. Low base target load would probably do the trick and save the shoulder.

I don't know a whole lot about them or how well they feed/cycle through a gun but what about using those MiniShells?  The recoil should be quite a bit less and it should increase your capacity.  Just a thought.

About a simple a gun as you can find....not sure why the cheaper ones wouldn't work.  Have you ever had one fail to fire?  My stoeger coach gun shoots awesome and is a heck of lot of fun.  My 10 year handles it fine and loves to shoot it with target loads.  They can be a little heavy though.....even with the short barrels.

Cheaper ones from Brazil, sample of one, would fail to open and close smoothly, to the point of requiring excessive force to close.  The finish is very poor (or cost appropriate).

And, by reports, they do slick up well enough, with competent attention and work to smooth the action, lighten the hammer springs (internal), and polish the chambers for easy extraction.  But the lightening of the hammer springs risks light primer strikes.

Minishells out of it was a hoot, though.

Nothing wrong with a Stoeger, I've go close to 1,500K down the tubes without one failure to fire. That includes 2 3/4 target, 3" heavy hunting loads and 00 Buck.

Carbon/plastic are super lightweight. I am building a pencil barrel off forged receivers.  With Daniel Defense sights and milspec collapsible stock, it should be a pretty handy HD carbine.

Check the what would Stoner do project for lightweight carbine ideas.

She has decided on a AR-15, .223 caliber, now we just need to figure out what makes sense for her. she's petite

Tell her to watch what is on the other side of the walls behind the target. I know people love ARs and .223 for home defense, but a .223 defense round will rip through a couple layers of drywall no problem. It can be a sketchy round for a house full of people.

I believe he said he was rural.

As to ARs in 5.56/.223, I have a polymer/carbon collapsible stock carbine that is unbelievably light.  It has a pencil barrel, and that helps keep the weight WAY down.  It is so handy that I am building a pencil barrel AR with aluminum receivers for my everyday AR.  Another thing I noticed that a standard milspec buffer tube and collapsible stock is much lighter than some of the aftermarket options like a VLTOR tube and IMOD.

Check out the What Would Stoner Do series from InRange TV for some ideas.

Conclusion:

Here’s possibly an outlying opinion: don’t buy her anything.  Find out what she likes, or at least is willing to put a few hundred/thousand rounds through and become proficient with.  After that, if she is committed to the idea of killing a human with it in self defense, she should buy and manage her own firearm.  If it’s a 10/22, it’s marginal but maybe what she can shoot a gnats ass off with in the dark and scared.  If it’s a 20 gauge pump, excellent.  If it’s a tricked out AK with double stacked mags and a folding stock, even better.  But none of it makes a difference unless she chooses to become proficient and take responsibility for her own protection.    Two cents.  Best of luck!

We are as rural as you can get, gated driveway in the middle of 500 Acers of timber, closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away, going to head up to Stans merry mart to see what’s available

First time I took my wife shooting my ARs, she had a hard time with iron sights.
I handed her my m&p15 with a red dot and told her to put the dot where you want the bullet to go.
She was surprisingly consistent from 25 and 50 yards.
Definitely good enough for defense at home.
She also shot my Steiner P4xi 1-4 variable very well.
But she likes the red dot a lot, though she tends to giggle a bit when she shoots, LOL

We are a nation of Riflemen, not tasermen or shotgun men or pistol men.  Get an AR for her.

 :yeah:

I feel just a little bit more manly owning an AR and reading that...
