Title: Hot Local Singles Meetup *EDIT*
Post by: Maybach Outdoors on June 30, 2020, 07:17:01 PM
Hello all,

I've been creeping around the forum for some time now and it seems that there are quite a few folks looking for people to go hunting with. It seems that there are tons of posts where people come out of the woodwork and voice their desire to meet up with other aspiring hunters (ie. go on a scouting trip). However, it seems that nothing really materializes from these posts.

I would like to organize a a little high buck hunt scouting trip if anyone is interested. Please shoot me a PM if you would like to go...
Truthfully, I'm a little apprehensive to spend a day or a weekend in the woods with a bunch of strangers so here are a few guidelines.

1. Ages 20-35 male or female (sorry to discriminate against ye old folk)
2. Must be able to drive to the trailhead
3. Must have some backcountry experience (ie. walk a couple miles with a pack)
4. Having a set of binoculars or a spotting scope is encouraged
5. Down to earth person
6. Get after it type of mentality
7. Must be free either July 17th or July 24th weekend (don't know if it will be a day or overnight trip)

I live in seattle so if you wanna meet up for a beer or something to "feel" each other out let me know

Not sure about how many people will reach out but I'd like to limit the group size to 5 or so...

A bit about me: I'm a 25 year old grad student (chemistry) at the University of Washington. I've been "hunting" for only two years... Not super experienced but learning every day. I did get into a ton of does last year just no bucks (I think I was too low in elevation). I've spent a ton of time in the backcountry so when it comes to gear and such I'm pretty dialed in... just trying to piece everything together for the hunting aspect of it. Politically I'm in the middle (*gasp*) so if you are super far right or left I'm not sure if we'd get along (although this isn't really a deal breaker... I will respect your opinions either way).

If anyone has done something like this before please reach out to me for ideas and suggestions.

Cheers,
M

Might learn something from the 30+ age group. Good luck with your online dating.. In this day and age there aren’t to many 20-30 year olds that are going to work that hard.

My thinking here was that people would vibe a little bit better if the age range tighter

Since I think I’ve killed more record book bucks than you are years old, I’ll have to sit this one out. Karl and I will have to watch from our rockers on the porch. :chuckle:

Once ran into a college geology class in Yellowstone, as the students were crawling up the trail the comment was that old fool, 60+ year old prof, is going to kill us.  20 always needs help, 35 is just getting started, good luck!!!

Hey now, I did both undergrad and grad school at UW, and I was a hunting addict then as now. Not every inmate in the Purple and Gold is a vegan New Ager...

For the record, I work at WSU now...  :hello:  :chuckle:

But seriously, to the OP, totally fine to want to get a group of hunting friends in your age class, but remember to dedicate some real time to learning from people with decades of hunting experience.   Hunting is a great example of an activity where long experience is incredibly important, whether acquired or handed down, or both.

I think this is an awesome post.  Very specific and that is important.  I must admit at 50 I am a completely different hunter than I was at 23.  We have a large family and have people in our camp from 14 years old to 70 years old.  The people I hunt with are 45-50, we shake our heads at what the 20 somethings are doing but remember that we were that age once as well and probably did the same things.

Not a doubt in my mind you will find a hunter or two that fit your list.  Have a blast and enjoy it.

I mentored an "under 30" hunter a number of years ago.  He was full of piss and vinegar and thought the way to hunt was cover lots of territory.  I gave him an area to hunt figureing him to take the whole day to hunt the area.  He was back in camp by 11AM asking me where I wanted him to go next.  Someone told me they saw him jumping from rock to rock on the hillside.  It took some time to teach him "the way of the snail".  Eventually I got him to hunt like an old guy.

My first date with my wife of 18 years started at a trail head.

Saddled a riding horse and a mule, packed 3 mules, left the truck at dusk, rode in the dark for 2 hours, arrived in elk camp to a warm tent and stove, unloaded 750 lbs of supplies for my buddies gun hunt, drank some whiskey, ate a great dinner, stayed the night in the wall tent with some crusty buddies, and rode out the next morning.

I wish you the best of luck on your 2 species hunt.
Shoot straight.

Interesting you bring this up. I've talked to people here at UW that are "Vegan New Ager"and the conversations have been interesting for sure. I've gotten anti-gun friends to shoot (loved it by the way), I've gotten anti-predator control to understand what's really going on, the list goes on. I'm in an interesting position to help sway people who otherwise would not have ever had anyone reach out to them about some of these things. I think we need to end the stigma that everyone on the left or at these liberal arts colleges is not willing to have a conversation. I also have a degree in psychology so I know how to deal with these situations... keep on keeping on I guess  :twocents:

Just wanted to clear some things about the age restriction thing:

Of course you "old guys" know more than us youngins... you simply have the experience and the foundation. I'm sure most of you could probably challenge me on the slopes. There is nothing to debate there.

But, the problem is that there aren't many mentors willing to give up boots on the ground time. A forum reply and thread can only go so far. There are people on this forum (check the old postings in this subsection) who have reached out in hope of finding people to go with... yet nothing seems to have materialized. I would love to change my requirements for this event to include everyone but the truth is most "experienced" hunters wouldn't even reach out in the first place.

Hear me out

By restricting the age gap a little bit I'm trying to target like minded people who are most likely new to hunting and don't have mentors. But my feeling is that everyone knows something... if we get a bunch of people who know something in the same room then we are going to come out of it knowing even a little more. Of course there are people in their 40's who are onset adult hunters who would love to participate but my feeling is that a majority of onset adult hunters are within that 20-35 age range.

This post is not really about me. I will get my hands on a hard horned buck this year no matter what. I've dedicated every weekend and ounce of free time this year just for that one goal. If it doesn't happen this year then I just have to work harder for next year. There just has to be people out there who are willing to put in the time, but they either don't have mentors or they are intimidated about going at it alone. I'm just willing to help these people out even if I may not be the best person for the job.  :twocents:

Don’t let the ribbing get to ya man, I think you’re taking a lot of these comments way too seriously. Get out there and do your thing and don’t apologize to anybody about doing it your way. If you get after it like you say you will and are successful, you’ll see a lot of these same folks will be there to slap you on the back and congratulate you on your success. Takes a little getting to know the forum but for the most part it’s a great group of individuals who will be happy for you when you reach your goal, ya just gotta go at it with a thick skin and a sense of humor  :twocents: good luck

You don't need experienced hunters to show you the ropes. Does it shorten the learning curve? You bet, but plenty of guys out there that just learned how to find success the old fashioned way by trial and error. I grew up in a hunting family but it was the complete opposite hunting of what I wanted out of hunting. I didnt have mentors. I had a few like minded buddies and my brothers who had the same motivation and work ethic. I don't think you are out of line at all looking for guys in that same age range as yourself. I also think you are spot on with "older" dudes being guarded. Anyone who has been doing this with success,  for any amount of time has been burned by spot jumpers and that just causes guys to be guarded. I'm admittedly still too open about information on areas but I like helping people and seeing their success. I'll bet you find some traction here and are able to link up with a few folks. At least I hope you do.

Karl,

I completely agree with you... if you have the motivation and drive you can do a lot of stuff. That's how it started for me... and book after book, podcast after podcast, and failed scouting trip after scouting trip has helped me become better (i've only scratched the surface though).

But... I still think some people just need a little spark to get them started. Not everyone is motivated and dedicated like us... For me that "spark" came when a family friend would not take me on a tree stand hunt back in Illinois because I didn't know anything. I hope that more tangible events like scouting trips with a bunch of newbies gives them the spark to set off on their own. I have no desire to be anyone's crutch but I will go out of my way to give them a spark. Just my thinking...

I think it's great...  I have hunted with family my whole life and had a hard time finding friends to hunt with.  I have a couple but it took years.  I commend you.  to get younger hunters fired up and in the woods there is something to be said about being around those of similar experience, age and mindedness.  Hanging with us "older" hunters can be a treasure trove of knowledge but also intimidating.  I hope you find a few, have a great time and continue to grow a passion to hunt.  To the other older guys, when I was in my 20's hunting was not just about hunting but maybe some campfire time and other adventures us older guys no longer care about. We tend to be about in the tent at 8pm and solely focused on the hunt vs the experience.  There is nothing wrong with that.  Us old guys NEED you and those you are asking to join you to get passionate and active.  Good luck and have a blast!!

Update:

We had a number of guys reach out to me about this scouting trip I organized. We had a few cancellations last minute but we had a couple of folks come out for a pretty successful trip!

We all arrived at the trail head around 6 am. After chatting for a little we set out a on a fairly leisurely 3 mile hike to a fork in the road. At the fork we began to bushwhack up a gnarly ridge. 1800 ft elevation gain in just under a mile. The climb was brutal to say the least... but it was a good icebreaker for sure. Along the ridge we found several good sized buck tracks. We slowly moved along the ridge while glassing adjacent high country clearings. Unfortunately, after a 4 or 5 hours of glassing we were unable to find a buck. We made our way back to the trailhead at 8 pm! Exhausting but fun day for sure.

Overall, I think the trip was a good start to meeting new hunters but also learning more about backcountry hunting. None of us were "experts" in any one category (gear, scouting, deer habits, etc.), but we all learned from each other because someone we all had different
knowledge we could share.

I hope that others who are new to hunting use this post as a model for how to get into the backcountry hunting world. It seems that if you don't reach out to people or go about it on your own then you won't ever learn or grow. On a side note: don't hesitate to reach out to me if you would like to see another trip like this! It seems that we might be able to squeeze in one more trip before hunting season.

Cheers,
M

Hell yeah! Glad you guys had a great trip!

Unsolicited advice time  :chuckle: bucks are gonna bed shortly after sun up. They will usually transition to a secondary bed or change positions at some point throughout the morning. After about 10 they will be hunkered in pretty good for the day. If you aren't glassing right at first light those bucks are gonna get hard to find. "Spot glassing" open areas is gonna be really ineffective mid day clear through evening. Get those binos on a tripod and dissect those pockets of bedding cover near food sources. If your binos are in your hand and not on a tripod you are missing deer.

Keep us posted on your next outing

We learned that the hard way! I think a few of us left the trip with tripods and better glass on our wish list for sure.
