Title: Ice Axe attachment
Post by: Rob on July 03, 2020, 10:24:31 AM
I got a Kuiu pack yesterday and I am really liking it.  I noted though that it does not have a loop for ice axe attachment.  Thinking this is likely something I may need on an upcoming trip so I built one.  Thought I would share.  Weight is ¾ of an ounce.

Parts:
•   A foot or so of 1 inch webbing
•   6-8 inches of bungee cord
•   2 push button draw string things
•   One quick detach tri-glide

Directions
1.   I put the webbing into the QD tri-glide and tied it into a water knot.  (Could sew it if you wanted to reduce some weight).
2.   I attached the QD tri-glide w/webbing to a bottom loop on the pack
3.   I connected the loop of bungee together with the two push button draw string thingies and looped it to a gear loop near the top of the pack
4.   Ice axe goes into the lower webbing loop and is folded back.  The top is held in place by the bungee.

Could probably make it even lighter if you want by ditching the webbing and clip and using a foot of so of paracord that is passed through the attachment loop and knotted off for the lower loop.

Nice and nice pack.  Which one is it?

Thanks

It is the kuiu pro with a 6000 ci bag.

I tried cordage instead of the webbing and it works well too.  It is a bit wobbly but i think if i shorten it that will fix it.  Also, my buddy pointed out that the knot was an overhand not a waterknot!

Weird they didn't have an axe loop.  I'm so used to having them on all my backpacking packs for many years, I just thought that's what everyone did.  Even the day packs.

Nice work.

Just remember to carry your axe with the point towards the center of your pack and not towards the outside as pictured (unless you plan to hike with the plastic guards on it).  Take a tumble, and you'll appreciate that pick not being pointed towards your body.
