Title: Pistol Scope Recomendations/Info
Post by: Katmai Guy on July 03, 2020, 11:46:15 AM
Guys, I'm looking for recommendations and things to consider in regards to putting a scope on my Ruger Redhawk .41 mag.  Mainly used for bear/cougar while archery hunting deer.  Thanks for any info, Ken

I have a Leupold M8-4x EER on my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter Bisley .45 Colt.  The 4 power is totally sufficient out to 100 yards.  The entire package is rather heavy, and I carry it in a chest holster.  There might be lighter scopes available, but I would go with a quality scope.  The recoil is massive, and I'm certain a cheaper scope would probably not stand up to it.

Nice looking setup, Igor.  Is there any type of reticle that works better than others with the long eye relief?

To tell you the truth I didn't explore any other options.  I've always been comfortable with the Leupold Duplex reticle on my rifles, so I just went with that one.

:yeah:

I am looking at a Leupold VX-3 Pistol Scope 2.5-8x 32mm Duplex Reticle for a 7.5" Ruger SRH and Encore pistol

Nice scope.  That scope would be my first choice, for sure.  My gun fund was a little low at the time, and I found the M8-4x used at the gun show.

FlOund3rz, that is a good lookin scope.  I think it would look good on top of my Redhawk.  Probably won't go with the variable though, something for me to screw up in the heat of the moment.😆

Most shooting prospects I have seen are less than 100 yards. First actual 20. Second actual, 200ish. Third actual, 50ish.  I mostly hunt brush. Several others around 50-150.  I think I could leave it at 2.5 for a quicker than unshoulerdering a rifle shot.

And Leupold has a veteran discount program, if you qualify.

The scope thing makes me think you want to shoot further, as in hunting bear and cougar.  Better read the regs.  Cant do that while bowhunting deer or elk.  Can only have a sidearm for personal defense.  You go shooting a bear or cat with that thing and tagging it while youre bowhunting, thats illegal.

Damn Bango, I had read that before but it had never applied so I just blew it off as another rule that makes you go, huh?
Now that ive reread it, you can't even handgun hunt bear or cougar in an area when archery deer or elk season is open even though it says any legal weapon for both bear and cougar.  Huh, maybe wdfw needs to reword something somewhere. :bash:  Thanks for the reminder.

Field of view is already an issue with long eye relief scopes and only gets worse with magnification. For those reasons I like the Leupold M8 2x. Used ones a pretty inexpensive too.

Re: regs, I just reread it and did not see anything about a suspension of bear or cougar during overlapping seasons with archery deer or elk. Seems like you could just say you were archery hunting bear and had a sidearm too, but I could be misinterpreting it.

Re; regs, I think it's going to come down to interpretation by the warden and what kind of mood he is in. :dunno:

You can, just not if you are actively hunting deer or elk with a bow during an archery season

If you have an qrchery deer tag in your pocket, and a bow with you, during archery deer season, youre hunting deer.

I would argue that in court.  If the warden asks me what I'm hunting and I say bear, even though it's deer season and I have a tag, he can get bent!
