Hi folks, the hunt is already over, so I guess I can get to taking pictures. We started at daylight this morning and within the first two minutes of the hunt I said theres a possible shooter. He thought I was kidding as he hadn't seen a buck the last couple days he had been scouting. It was a 4 point, about 3.5 years old. Very short tines, but good mass. We let him walk. It was dark enough I couldn't get phots, but here is a blurry one....

We looked over alot of animals, but only a couple two points. It was about noon and we had moved to a different local. We were scouting access to an area we had hunted in the past. Idabooner sent me ahead and of course I kick a decent buck. It looked like a shooter. I ran back and got him, and by the time we got back they were out of range. We got back to the truck and backtracked up the road. We caught up with the deer and the debate began. There was a borderline 4 point with a doe and three other does. Problem is, the buck I saw was bigger I was sure, and there were 8 deer. I think we got wambuzzled, but we counted only the one buck. He had nice tines, but small mass. Another 3.5 year old. We moved on. We stopped by the house to get some grub, then headed over to check out some country we hadn't hunted before. As evening approached I wanted to get back to the sage. We were glassing deer bedded in the rocks and feeding in the brush, when some deer came trotting by us. I still don't know what scared them. One was a samll 3x4

We then spotted another 2 point. We were trying to decide what we wanted to do. ABout that time, Idabooner spottede a buck up on the hill in the rocks and asked if that was the same buck. I looked up there and said nope, and ran back to the truck to get the spotter. We got it set up and the analysis began. He was about 400-500 yards up the hill in the rocks. To try to describe what went on next is impossible. I changed my mind 15 times whether I wanted him to pull the trigger or not. It was a very long shot. He looked through the scope and said he couldn't even see it. He handed me the rifle, and I'm like holy cow. Then I looked and it was on 2 power. We cranked uit up to 7 and it was much better. We finally decided to let him walk, then he waled out onto the rock outcropping and I'm like are you sure??? Dad was looking through the scope, and he caught an angle that made him want him.

The 270 with a 150 grain bullet set at zero at 200 yards and a 22 inch drop at 400 yards FIRED.....
Idabooner was on the gun on my cooler as a rest shooting almost straight uphill. A very long shot. He was perfect and the trigger was squeezing, and the doe in front decided to turn. THe spotter yelled hold, and then the buck followed and there was no shot. Ten minutes or an eternity passed while Idabooner sat there and waited. I was about to ask if he wanted to stretch, and he was about to get up when I said he is moving. He cleared teh brush and posed so majestic on the upper rocks. I said take your shot. Boom! I swear the crack was done and there was a breath almost, and I saw the bullet hit. PERFECT SHOT! I yelled. The buck hopped and trotted forward. He paused. He didn't have far to go to clear the ridge and the real work would have started. He stood there in the wide open. I said hit him again, and he did. This one cost us some meat. Idabooner put one more and got him in the front shoulders. He held his crosshairs 4 inches above the back and hit him smack in the boiler room with the first shot. The buck was dead and just didn't know it. I busted up the hill to go claim the buck and haul him down the mountain. Michelle, you would love this cape. It is gorgeous, with lots of black. Its very possible we could have done better, but with this blue bird weather pattern, who knows, and who cares. The shooter is very happy, and so is the guide. This was the 8th buck of the day, our 4th four point. Now we will be out with camera gear, and probably will see some monsters. We won't be limited to our unit now and can have some real fun. P.S. I think this is the first time I have ever seen DaD SMILE ;)

Looks like great fun so far! Man is his neck swelled up! I'm PUMPED to get to the entiat this weekend! Congrats! What other hunts do you ahve for the rest of the month? You are on FIRE this year!
Michael
-
bone congrats man, tell your pops great job on the shot and on a gorgeous deer!! refresh my memory if you would on which tag he had. anyways great job. And a big congrats. I get why you werent sure if you should wait. doesnt look like much weather in the forecast for the next couple weeks.
-
Chiliwist tag.....which is very weather dependent.
-
Awsome, looks like your dad shot a nice buck. Looks like the weather is too nice over there oh well take what you can get. You said 8th buck of the day, what did everyone else take out of there?
-
:IBCOOL:
Fantastic story and buck. Nice photos :hello:
-
thanks bone, congrats again!!!
-
great story and buck.
-
Thanks guys! I'm not sure Michael. I have an Idaho tag eating a hole in my pocket, but not sure I will get over there or not. I guess I ahve the time now. Mostly i'll be trying to gather some photos for the troops here I think. The neatest thing about these late tags is we didn't see another hunter the entire day. I suppose some of the more popular ones like the Entiat you might, but this is big country over here and early. Most won't show until the weekend, and there are a lot of square miles for 25 tags. We are headed out this morning to see if we can get some on film that we might have missed, then its cutting up time and I need to work on his cape. This thing is gorgeous.
-
Congrats..sounds like it was busy, but great day.
-
way to go again boys...i should have turned the pooter on last night.
congrats idabooner and i'm glad your boy didn't make you shoot that dink 3 point :chuckle:
-
As Mr. Potato Head said, "Way to go Idaho" Great story Boone, I love it when you can get pics of the buck before he is harvested, tell pops congrats..................rf
-
Nice buck.
-
Nice Buck!!! Congrats
-
No doubt a nice buck!! Very cool you were able to get some pics of the deer before he hit the ground. Congrats Idabooner!
-
Nice buck, that sure is a real pretty looking cape, how long has your dad been putting in for the hunt? Sounds like you guys had a great time together, congrats.
-
:( Well I tried to pst last night, but my computer started acting up. I was following you as you were posting the story waiting for you to get done.
Thats a great looking buck! :)
-
Way to go Idabooner/ Doug! Good story.
-
Sweet! Thanks for taking us along for the ride. That was a fun read! 8)
-
Another nice buck on those late tags, I'm in shock that it ended on day one though.
-
He had max points, whatever that is these days, I have lost track. We figure it will never happen again. We went out this morning in the same unit and saw 7 bucks by 8 this morning. None after that. One was close to his, shaped different, but not as nice. I saw a very nice rub in a pile of brush that was as fresh as it gets. I knew it was a decent buck. We went 10 yards and there he was about 300 yards up the hill. I scored a few pics and will get them posted, but later when I am on my own computer. Trying to do this on his computer is fun stuff.
THanks everyone! I am in shock too Ridge. I planned on being away from home for the next three weeks. Now grandpa gets to go home with me and visit with the grandkids while I cut meat. I'm very happy with his decision after today. The rut is on strong, but this bluebird weather puts them down by 9 in the morn. After a visit with the family I then plan on taking him to one of my honey holes where the big ones live on Monday. I'm still trying to get you or Jack there. It is supposed to snow in the NE corner Sunday, so that should livewn things up a bit. It looks like its coming out of Canada, so not sure if this area or the Entiat will get any.
-
congrats on another great buck fella's. thanks for sharing the photos /story

-
Congrats on a nice buck and a great hunt.
-
NICE BUCK IDABOONER!
Nice pics too Bone!
-
Nice story and pictures! thanks for sharing
-
THANKS EVERYBODY, it was a great hunt, but I consider it not over yet, Boneaddict and I both have time off so we are going to camera hunt now, after a couple day visit with my grand kids which I don't get to see much of. We both enjoy the woods enough camera hunting is just as rewarding and alot less work, of course pictures don't eat good but we are lucky to have our freezers full for winter. Bone takes good care of the old man, he does most of the work. Anyway we are looking forward to the next week or more, in the woods observing and taking pictures of the wild life.
-
Congrats booner!!! I am looking forward to the next week of pics. They are always great. THnks for sharing your guys hunt with us.
WACAT
-
Great buck booner, pics are awesome too!
The moss don't grow on you guys. I've never seen so many one day hunts.
-
I questioned our wisdom on tagging out early, but from what we have seen, we haven't topped him yet. We saw one this morning that was close, but I think it was a good 3.5 year old buck, where Dads probably had a year on him. I'll get the pics on here when I get home in front of the puter. We saw two yesterday that hw would have liked to have hung his tag on, but they weren't in this unit. They were nice NE corner bucks. We saw 19 bucks yesterday. A nice on e in the morning along with a couple dinks, then nothing for about 9 hours, then a whole pile right before dark. One was a gorgeous 170 buck. The rut isn't quite as far along over there for the mulies and the only whitetail buck we saw wasn't even there. Didn't see any whitetail rut activity at all yet.
-
Great story and nice buck..................thanks.
-
Thanks guys for the complements. Like bone said we seen a nice buck this morning, seen a couple small ones then we took a short break, got eats and scouted out some new areas. Then back to the camera hunt, we did find a fairly nice one this evening, 9 bucks in all today. Boneaddict had to take some long shots with his camera today, the deer are getting spooky, the rut is going strong in this area so I hope the other late tag hunters do as well as we did. I'm glad we decided to tag out early, so far we haven't found one I would trade for in this area. I'm going to give it a break for a while and get some H-does done. ;)
-
And a BIG THANKYOU TO BONEADDICT for all the support and help. :) :) :)

True story Miles. Here is sunrise over deer country.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fsunrise.jpg&hash=563c3de2a1f69d7df1518af0a879223627a21d6a)
-
Here is the buck we saw that was comparable. I haven't compared the pics side by side yet, but I think Dad's buck had a bit better upper forks about as heavy but not as nice of a spread. Doesn't matter, both were great bucks. I'd have to have drug this one uphill, so you made the perfect choice. ;) Sorry for the blurr, it was nearly dark or just shooting light. I think I have some with my other camera on a tripod, I can't remember. I'll check it out. Those other boys drove by this guy. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be in a hurry.

WOW Doug! Those are my antlers and if you mean what I think you do, that is MIGHTY NICE of you, what a suprise, I don't know what to say, Thank you. :IBCOOL:
-
Yep, thats what it means. I want to go shedding tomorrow, but I think I will stay home and clean my garage. :)
I got two forms, both should fit the deer. One upright and one semisneak. I was eyeballing your house and figured this one would go best. Just to the wall left of your computer desk looking at you when you round the corner. We'll have to hang it when the Mrs. is on a shopping trip to Omak.
-
You two are an inspiration to us all! Thanks for all you guys do and post here for the rest of us!
-
Thanks Dekuma, Its fun to have interested folks.

You got that part right. Might put it by the cougar or down by the goat, I don't think it would be safe to move her pictures, she might hang us on the wall un stuffed.
-
Wow. Good job Bone! What a great gift. Hope you plan on sharing pics of the finished mount!
Dandy buck Idaboomer!
-
Thanks Cowboy, and DeKuma
-
Sure is going to be a pretty mount one to be proud of there idaho.
-
Yep, I'll keep you guys posted as it goes. Hopefully I'll have all my painting kinks out by then.
-
:) Is it done yet? :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
I bet you get alot of that in the taxidermy trade.
Hell, I'm almost finished with his moose thats still hanging in my dining room. Painted the eyes last night. Now I just need to gander and figure out what color for the ears. Probably the same.
