Title: Disabled Son's Deer Hunt: BUCK DOWN Y'ALL!
Post by: jcarswel on August 14, 2020, 05:12:06 AM
Hey all, it was suggested that I post here as I'm looking for assistance to help on my son's first deer hunt.  My son is 11 years old and this will be his first year hunting.  Although he is beyond excited about this, both he and I (and of course his mama) have a great deal of concern due to his difficulty in walking any great distance.  My son was born without a right hip joint and a deformed right femur.  He has had at least 12 surgeries to grow and shape his body but he remains greatly limited in his mobility.  He tries to push himself and we don't go easy on him but I know that he is in constant pain and I would love to alleviate some of the difficulties and make this first year hunting a bit easier.  With these challenges, I'm looking to see if anyone has any nuisance deer or knows of where my son could have a chance to shoot an animal this fall.  I'm not looking for any sort of trophy buck, I just want him to have some success and ignite a love for hunting.  I understand that this may be a big ask but any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum Josh! Your son sounds like a tough kid. Unfortunately I have no land or deer to offer but I can almost guarantee you that your son is gonna shoot his first deer due to a huntwa member. Some of the best and most generous people on planet earth reside on this forum

@buckcanyonlodge

No idea if this is a thing but do you know if a special permit could be issued for a muley doe on your neck of the woods?

For our OP I'm assuming he will be a rifle shooter? If he needs any equipment assistance I've got a 6.5 creed kimber ascent already dialed in with a suppressor he is welcome to.

Just trying to think where a critter would be a slam dunk...

@YJ Guide Service  Craig may know a bit about permitting in specific situations.  He manages a great little farm.

In NE WA the only unit with an antlerless season for disabled hunters is GMU 124. I think this may change in the not too distant future, after the mild winter I've seen a slight increase in deer numbers this summer. We used to have antlerless hunting in NE WA for disabled, seniors, and youth.

I'm not sure but YJ (Craig) may have some antlerless hunting in his area?

Yes, either sex whitetail in most areas for anyone, but deer tags are sold out this year. I think you can still get doe tags in MT but that's a pretty good drive.

I have plenty of spots in the NE corner any buck units that he could sit for a few days and have a darn good chance of killing a deer. Some are easy to access so I would be willing to help

Hunt Wa Family you always amaze me! This is one of the main reasons why I love this forum! Though I don't post a lot, I'm on here daily and have many friends within this community.  This includes Josh the OP.  Josh and I went to high school together and their family have traveled across the US to ensure their son receives the best treatment from the top doctors around!

He is strong little man and very deserving of any help we can give him! Thank you to the members who have already sent PM's to the OP. Lets be patient with his response as Josh (OP) is active LE and works different schedules.  Their family is a family based on faith and built on a foundation of love and public service!

Josh welcome to the forum! I will call you this weekend to catch up... been too long!

Josh,

I have just the place for your son and we always save it for something like this. We have several smaller type 3 point bucks with the occasional small four points. Relatively easy hunt, not a lot of walking involved and would probably shoot out of a ground blind. This is in the Ellensburg area for Mule Deer on private ground. He could use a rifle or muzzy in this unit and I have several kid rifles if needed.

I would be more then happy to help you and your son with his first buck hunt. You guys would want to be here for the opener of the general rifle season for the best results. PM me if you are interested. I will be in AK for part of August and September but here in Eburg the rest of the time. I'm sure we could even find a time for you and your son to come over here prior to the season to do some scouting and to see some deer before the season, as this is always a lot of what the kids his age enjoy and is a big part of what will make his hunt fun!

What an incredible response guys!  I too don't post often, only a few stories here and there, but I monitor and read daily.  This story is unique as Josh is my brother and the young man in question, my nephew.  To say he is deserving of this hunt is an understatement!  This is a young man, who regularly has to travel to Florida to undergo surgeries and months of physical therapy and other extreme pain.  He is surrounded by supportive family and friends and it appears a new batch of friends.  Thank you all again for the support and the offers!

He sounds like a great/tough little man Jlittlebear. I'm pretty sure he can get er done on this piece of property but obviously there are never any guarantees. There is always half a dozen plus legal kid type bucks and we always leave it for kids that are hunting for the first time.

It would be a lot of fun to help him get his first buck and he sounds very deserving of it. I also have a shooting range where he can shoot prior to the hunt. More than likely it would be under 150 yard shot.

PM your cell# and I can send you some pics of some of the bucks that you can show the young man

Wow everyone, I am truly stunned by the response.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate the kindness everyone has towards the situation.  I apologize for being slow in responding.  You all are amazing to offer financial support.  Loch just had a birthday and we got him a rifle so we are good there.  I'm not as avid a hunter as some so I'm still trying to brainstorm on what gear he needs.  I certainly appreciate any help people are willing to give in compiling a list.  As Wunderlich33 said, financial times are tough and I didn't come here for a handout but love the community that we have stumbled into.  Just know that everyone's offer has left our family speechless.

Additionally, I am amazed by the offers of land to hunt.  Thank you so much for being willing to help Loch out.  I will reach out to everyone that sent me messages and again, thank you so much for all of your kindness.

If he gets his buck and doesn't mind leaving it with me, I could do the euro mount for him. We would just have to figure out the best way to get it back to them in Monroe. With all the travelling and hunting on this site it shouldn't be too difficult to get it back over the hill.

What about Uncle Jake (Jlittlebear) as a point man? I have talked with him quite a bit and he is a great guy and willing to help in any way he can. He can talk with Josh and Loch to make sure he gets what he needs for this hunt.

From talking with Josh (op) and Jake they are very modest and I'm pretty sure you all have overwhelmed them with your kindness and generosity.

As I stated and others have stated during this thread, What an amazing response to my brother and nephew.  Yes, Pinetar, we're pretty simple modest people and my brother did not get on here for handouts.  With that being said, I know people here are genuinely pumped to give and offer services, gear and other things.  My brother would never accept anything but a place to stay.  However, I'm going to accept on his behalf and I will make sure all gifts, money etc, gets into the hands of Loch and Josh.
I know Loch does not have a good set of binochs, shooting sticks/bipod, camo or orange, pack, knives, spotting scope.  He pretty much is starting from scratch.  He is shooting a Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmoor for those who asked about ammo or what he was shooting.  I'm going to choose to post his PO Box that way he can't refuse anything and it will all go directly to him.  I can also update this thread with items he receives so we don't begin duplicating.

po box 272

If you are not comfortable with this then please PM me and we can make different arrangements

Again, thank you all so much.  This has blown up far beyond our hopes and much appreciation to all of you.  I know he'll have an absolute blast this fall!

Again and again, over and over.  We don’t even have to ask anymore. It just happens. Y’all are the bees knees. An army. Way to go, all. I’ve got one of those Sony Action Cameras I’ll throw in for videoing purposes if someone wants to figure out how to use the thing. It’s Sony’s version of a GoPro.

I've gotta make this crystal clear to you, Josh and Loch.....THIS IS NOT A HANDOUT! We as a community of sports men and women take the task of perpetuating our passion very seriously.  I think most of us take our children's good health for granted, and hearing Loch's story of struggle and perseverance brings us all back to reality.

This forum has a long history of circling the wagons when our own need it.  CPT Aaron Blanchards family, Keegans cancer battle, disabled veterans hunts, and the list goes on and on. You didn't ask for for things, we offered and its rude to turn down a gift sooo :chuckle:

I failed to notice TriggerMike offered binos before me. Not to step on toes, but I can have a NIB set of Vortex binos in the mail tomorrow evening if @TriggerMike is okay with that. If he'd like to still donate his binos, I'll come up with something else. Let me know.

6.5 on the ammo.

6.5 creedmoor, per PM, it was earlier in thread. Now the hunt before the hunt.

Based on ammo preference being personal and/specific to rifle, and due to limited availability, I'll probably just send a check.

Rather than send a check im gonna order up and send a trigger stick and if the OP or someone else near by is will to do the simple swap,  I'd like to order a mcarbo trigger kit for that axis. Its a simple swap but makes a HUGE difference on that axis.

As for ammo, the Berger ammo is fantastic and in stock at midway.

Jake, ground blind on the way.  I also included a set of Walkers muffs.  Its already hard manging movement with a little guy. They'll find it hard to get on target as it is, now no messing with ear protection too.

Cant wait now for the pictures!!

Tripods are great but also more cumbersome and take up more space in the blind. Not sure how big the blind is.  I can order whatever.

Sent them a Doghouse (ameristep).  It's a 2 man set up.  A bi-pod is no problem. A tripod will depend on how big the base is.  I used to take my kid, 2 chairs, bi-pod and a little buddy heater.

Josh, not sure if you can pull this off but. How cool would it be for Loch to get a triple this year. I don't know what he will be hunting in Washington.  There is a Whitetail Doe waiting for him here in Montana. It would be on our lease. Driven to a blind in heated SxS. We can drive him right up to his kill.
There is a youth hunt here in Oct. 2nd week I think. Roughly 3 hours North of Missoula.

Not sure if there have been any offers for a place to hunt (not looking through 7 pages)... Decatur Island would be a good place as access to most locations is easy and the deer are plentiful.

You can PM me if you want to.

We are receiving packages and have been struck and overwhelmed anew by the outpouring of support for Loch.  I just want to let everyone know that Loch has seen all of the messages and whether you have sent gear, money or well wishes, you are greatly impacting him.  Our entire family are supremely impressed with the hunting community and the example it gives.  In this time of tumult for our society, it is a breath of fresh air to see the promotion of family and wholesome activity.  Thank you all!

Update,
I had originally offered a $100.00 donation to Loch. After thinking about all that had transpired on this thread.
I spoke to Josh on Friday and I had Loch provide me a wish list of some things he would like.
Josh PM’d me the list over the weekend and I have placed an order for a
Estwing Sportsman Axe with sheath and some Drake LST insulated bibs.

This will be delivered to the PO Box on Friday.

Good luck Loch on your hunt this fall...

Could someone please update the list on page 1.

Thanks Jerry.

I can't help with a location for a deer hunt for the young Loch, but, can certainly help him out with a couple of hunting goodies.  On the way is a Hunting Log Book (really cool tool to keep track of what occurred during this and hunts to follow), and, a Legendary Whitetail Outfitter Hoodie (Blaze Orange Inferno); both items coming to the PO Box.  Heck, a guy has got to keep warm when he's out waiting for Mr. Big to show up, and, it's always a good idea to keep some notes about the hunt.... yes?  ;).  Best of luck in your hunt this fall mister Carswell, we're all pulling for you.  r/ RJ

I’m working on meeting Josh in Monroe to get Loch his action cam.

Meanwhile I did a little looking on the Facebook and found there is a Facebook page chronicling Loch and the challenges he’s been dealt. Tough to read this and not have it put things in perspective a little bit. Some of the things most of us find hard in life really isn’t that hard.  This little dude is a beast.

I'm so excited for Loch!  We got the chance to go out a few days ago for bear.  As much as I was frustrated by the domestic dogs running around, the horseback rider and the motorcyclists making noise, Loch couldn't stop smiling and continuously blurted out ( In a slightly too loud for the woods voice), "This is awesome!"  First off, I blame you all because when we decided to go out, we only had a few hours but Loch was dead set on bringing ALL of his new gear!  I had to deny him on a few of the items and told him that those would be used on longer hunts.  We alternated between him holding his rifle and me holding his tripod and when the rifle would get too heavy, he would use the tripod as a cane while I took his rifle.  Ultimately, the hunt ended with Loch on my shoulders, a backpack on my back and a rifle in both hands.  Loch didn't care, he was having the time of his life just being out in the woods.  Fantastic memory for a proud papa brought on by all of your kindness.

Good for you guys Josh! I'm looking forward to showing you and Loch some deer on the 26th and 27th of September. My kids enjoy the scouting as much as the hunting. Maybe we can even spend one of the evenings or mornings bugling/cow calling in a bull as they are fired up right now. We could also take him out and try and get him a grouse or two!

I just keep thinking, "I hope Dad taught a few knife skills..." That steel is very forgiving when it comes to maintenance, and neglect, it's very stain free stainless... But one of its other features is that it gets stupid ridiculous sharp. I'm sure it's in your hands by now, you've probably seen... Just please be mindful of the sharpness! All my knives shave. Update, I had to postpone the scouting trip from our original date of Sept 26th week to Oct. 11th and 12th as I promised my daughter to go Muzzy deer hunting that weekend and The Carswel family adults are muzzy Elk hunting this weekend. Loch is coming over with family on 11th and 12th to scout for some bucks, get familiar with the property and setup the blind Colville gave him

Been in touch with the Carswel family and Uncle Jake quite a bit and I'm really impressed with this tight family and very much looking forward to our adventure. Uncle Jakes kids (Loch's cousins, roughly same age) have asked if they could be with Loch on his first hunt and said they have no problem giving up their opening weekend deer hunt to be with Loch and help him out. Kids being raised the right way is great to see in todays times. Thank you to all of HuntWa for everything you have made possible for Loch, his family and his extended family.

What a fun two days hanging out with the Carswel Family. Great people and super good polite kids! Loch was able to use a bunch of his gear that the HuntWa community so graciously sent him. He got to watch two bucks in a little pushing match through his new spotting scope Elkaholic123 gave him, two days of sizing up bucks through TriggerMikes binos and he was never too far from that beautiful knife from H20 that Rainshadow built

We were able to find 8 different legal bucks, now he has four days to get his hit list in order :chuckle: I think he liked one of the taller slick three points till the wider three point showed up with nice eye guards, decisions decisions

Five more sleeps till go time buddy!! (side joke :chuckle:)

Well, today is going to be a great day. I hope Loch got more sleep than I did  :chuckle:

I have no idea how many kids I have taken hunting for their first Elk and Deer hunt but I am more excited about this hunt then any. Loch has been through so much for such a young man that I can't even imagine what he has had to overcome. However, this guy is always smiling, laughing and has the best personality and attitude of any young man. You would never know that he has been through 12 surgeries in his 11 years. We could all learn something from Loch.

They made it over yesterday with Uncle Jake and his two boys (15 & 17) that asked dad if it would be OK to give up their opening weekend to support Loch. We headed out around 4PM to go glass up some some bucks, the wind started howling and it looked like some weather may roll in so most of the deer were hunkered in. We did however see a couple nice three point bucks but we didn't get to see the new contender that just arrived yesterday chasing a doe with a swollen neck :yike: seems early but this buck was showing some rutting activity. I'm pretty sure Loch's hit list may change this morning if we can turn him up and if he can stay off that crisp new trigger that Karl sent him :chuckle:

Loch is well prepared with all this gear you all have given him that he pulls out something new every hour, it hardly all fits in my truck.

It is almost go time, Loch has his game face on and is ready to roll. Thanks again to HuntWa for all the support and we will keep you updated.

NO MORE SLEEPS!

Shoot straight Loch!

In a good way... a part of me hopes he takes a deer tomorrow.... so the experience and time afield with friends and family is a little longer. Not that it ever ends at the shot. Just want as much of a great story as we can get. Good action in the morning, but didn't see the new contender so waited it out, here some pictures with the cousins in the blind (maybe with some hot cocoa?). Loch's number one came out before shooting light was up in the evening but wasn't presenting. The stories and smile at the fire after the first days hunt, with hopes high for tomorrow. In a good way, I hope he gets two days chasing his first buck.

But the only thing I hope for is that Loch has the time of his life and takes a fantastic first Buck! He deserves it and a thank you to all the members who made this happen.

KCCO my friends.

What a day!  First off I have to thank you all for the support throughout this process.  All of you have been amazing and Loch has thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the comments during this time.  If I didn’t get your mailing address to send out a thank you letter from Loch sorry I missed that.  Please PM me your address that so we can get that out to you.  On to the hunt!
The family had met with Pinetar the weekend prior to the hunt and were able to see the deer that were roaming on the property.  This was so exciting for Loch and the entire family.  Loch was salivating over a couple bucks and we all absolutely enjoyed our time over the weekend.  Fast forward to this past Friday and Loch was able to have his uncle, two cousins and I along as we headed out for the weekend.  Loch wanted to give his family a sneak peek at the hunting property so we slipped over there Friday afternoon with Pinetar.  What we found was a noticeable reduction in animals.  Quite concerning!  The wind was whipping across the land and we assumed that the deer were hunkered down.  Our other assumption was that with the reduction in wind forecasted, the deer would be more active come Saturday morning.  We spent the remainder of the evening, relaxing and having a great family time.  The night was a restless one filled with silent prayers for a quality hunt and worry over what would take place in just a few short hours.  I think both my brother and I only were able to catch a couple hours of sleep.  In the dark of night the alarm clock sounded, signaling the end to our waiting game.  Loch was awake and seemed to completely ignore the lack of sleep he had to be suffering from, instead focusing on the task at hand.  We made sure he had all of his gear with him and that he had the necessary clothing to keep him warm in the chill of a windy early morning fall day.  We snatched a quick bite from the hotel continental breakfast and set out to meet Pinetar.
When we arrived, we were greeted with the news that the animal situation had not in fact changed in any significant way.  There was a strange lack as if they knew it was dooms day for one of them.  One buck was enjoying an early snack, a 3 point with a broken main beam antler.  Loch got a good look at this one and was hesitant to take the first one he saw hoping that the others he had seen the previous weekend were somewhere out there still.  We worked to get Loch situated in a comfortable shooting position that would allow him to not put excessive stress on his right leg as well as get him into an advantageous shooting location, allowing him to see as much of the area as possible.  As the broken 3 point slowly meandered away from our location, you could hear the concern in Loch’s voice as he asked, “should I have shot that one?”  While masking our own concern, we tried to reassure him that there would be more chances.
All of us continued to scan the area for any sign of activity… and soon we began to see hints of hope.  After seeing several doe begin to emerge and move, we found the buck Loch was looking for.  The big fella enjoyed the protection of the sage and seemed aware of the danger of exposing himself to Loch.  He revealed his white face and rack to us but kept his vitals hidden and protected by the foliage.  Loch had already made up his mind that this was his buck and we went to work finding his moment to shoot.  Back behind the gun he went and we began our shooting sequence once again, reminding him to breath, targeting area, squeeze, etc.  He remained patient, waiting for his moment, but the chess game turned as the buck did.  He headed back into the sage not giving Loch a chance to take advantage of his M*Carbo optimized trigger spring.  Just as we thought we were at the precipice of his first kill, the deer disappeared over a slight rise.  As disappointment crept in, his uncle saw that there was a collection of doe just on the other side of the rise.  Pinetar saw that it was time to try and reposition Loch into another area.  We slid out of the current location and slipped along the sage line, parallel with the buck’s line of travel.  We had a dirt mound that we aimed for that appeared to give Loch the chance to see into the clearing where we suspected that the buck had moved.  We snuck up onto the mound and saw what we hoped to find.  A group of does, along with Loch’s buck and one other legal buck.  They had us pegged from the get go but allowed us to set Loch up with his rifle.  The does slowly began to move away from us but the buck of choice remained in place, giving us a glimmer of hope.  The small 3 point got up, became concerned with what we were doing by the dirt and started to move.  Loch’s buck didn’t recognize the danger quick enough.  As he finally felt the peril he was in, he began to move away.  But by this time, Loch had his sights on him and was only waiting for his moment.  Loch had been given the green light when he had an opening and now it was up to him and his nerves to hold.  He continued to look for a window in the sage but there seemed to constantly be some obstruction.  As the buck slowly turned and began to severely quarter away from us, Pinetar reminded Loch to put his reticule slightly back on the bucks shoulder.  At what seemed the last instant before the buck turned away from us, the sound of the rifle broke the stress and silence of the moment.  From my vantage, all I could see was the body of the buck arch upward quickly before coming down and jerking to the side at a run.  Loch immediately chambered a round and secured the safety before looking back at me.  We reassured him that it was a good shot and he responded with an enthusiastic whisper, “sniper elite!”
As we collected ourselves, and began to wait to begin tracking, we found the only solid knees and steady hands in the group were of the youngest member, the knees and hands of the stone cold rookie hunter himself.  After a short time, we approached the last seen location of the buck and found him a very short distance from where he began his bloody retreat.  Pinetar pointed out the glistening rack to Loch and we approached with caution, ready for the need to finish the job.  No such need was warranted though as it was apparent that Loch’s single round had done it’s job.
Loch’s smile was unstoppable.  Celebrations began, photos were taken, prayers of thanks were lifted.  The buck was moved to a location to be gutted and Loch experienced his first field dressing.  Thanks to Rainshadow’s knife, Loch sliced and diced the buck, even experiencing the unfortunate consequence of poking a hole in the stomach and having the contents spray up onto his face. Sick!  Loch was on cloud nine, his face frozen in a wide smile throughout the rest of the day.
The deer was skinned and delivered in the game bag to Woodhouse Smoked Meats!  The festivity continued into the evening as Loch, the deer slayer was celebrated and stories of the days heroics were told throughout the land!
Thank you again for everyone’s part in making this a lifelong memory for Loch and the entire family.  We are astounded by the support from the forum and hope to be able to pass this on to others in the future!

Josh

***Update as the hunt continues**

Loch (Sniper Elite) and his family are doing well and are still humbled by all on here for last years hunt.

When we were hunting last season for Loch's buck he was very excited at getting a chance someday to hunt Elk. A good friend of mine owns some property here in Ellensburg and was kind enough to allow Loch to come over and hunt Elk.

On Monday evening Loch showed up with his dad, mother and sister. That was a treat as it is always a lot more fun to have the entire family along. Tuesday morning we met up with my friend and it didn't take too long to find a herd of Elk. After hours and hours of watching the Elk and waiting for them to bed down for the day, I'm pretty sure Loch was getting a little anxious :chuckle:

We came up with a plan to move in on them with the wind in our favor. This meant that Loch, his father, mother, sister and I had to climb in there about a half mile then Loch, his father and I crawled over a rise about 15 yards or so, setup and take the shot. Loch was amazing and never complained one time about his leg/hip. This kid is one of the toughest kids I have ever met. Once we got set up for the shot a big cow stood up (bad move on her part) and started to move off on her own and away from the other Elk. Loch took his time, waited for a couple calves to clear his shot and made one perfect 249 yard double lung shot and she only made it about 20 yards and piled up. :IBCOOL: High Fives and Sniper Elite comments were made by all!!

On the way back to the truck we all offered to piggy back him and or move the truck closer to make for a shorter hike out and Loch refused. He was like "I walked in here and I will walk out".

I can't wait for General deer season to get here soon enough and to be hunting with Sniper Elite and his family again!

Right on!

There are at least 2 young men running around with favorite hunting shirts form Yorke.

I LOVE it.

I've still got my picture of Loch up on the family fridge with his trusty dog. I was just thinking about how he was doing the other day. Way to go! Good luck during deer season, though I don't think he'll need it.
