Title: "Legal" Elk in your hunting area
Post by: WapitiTalk1 on August 17, 2020, 10:59:54 AM
What's considered a "legal" elk in the area you'll be hunting this year? Additionally, what is your personal threshold or goal for your area? Just sparking some elky conversation, it's getting closer  ;)

3pt or better or cow in the units I’ll be hunting(muzzleloader). I usually buy a tag but decided I’m finally going to get somewhat serious about it this year. I’d be happy with any legal animal.

3 pt minimum.  Any legal bull gets it.

Any elk where will be trying to fill my old man's tag. He has never killed an elk with his bow so there will be a lot of factors in what he is willing to shoot. I have my own thoughts but this is his hunt and I am just there to help in whatever way I can.

OR archery area is "any elk", but we try to focus on the herd bull as there are not many hunters that go where we go after this small herd so we usually have some time.  But if there is a cow at close range, it will be harvested.

WA muzzy elk is 3pt min, and as heavily hunted as that backcountry area gets....the first legal bull gets the shot.

Spike or draw cow, both options open for me. Standing side x side I'd take the spike.

Any elk is the rule. Any elk is my wife's directive; maybe I won't tell her about the broadside cow that I pass for a chance at the bugling bull.  :dunno:

Any bull, multiple states. Any bull that gets fired up enough to fall for my setup is the one I want

Any elk is any elk in the unit I'm focusing on.  Might hunt another unit that is any bull but if a fat cow presents a shot she's going down.  Good luck everybody getting pumped for opener!

Any elk unit for me. I would love to say I will hold out for antlers but I know better. I will shoot a cow without hesitation.

In Idaho I usually go for a 6pt for the first week or so and then it's any elk for the remainder of the hunt. Washington is any legal elk unless I draw but that has not happened for 14 years or so now.

3 pt min and in some units antlerless.  I am on a quest for a monster purebred Rosie.  Have let lots of 5x5's walk.  Have had one that meets my criteria at full draw at 20 yds for over a minute.  It was a head on shot that I was not willing to take at the time.  Had him again at 35 yrds a few minutes later, but it was waning light and I would had to have threaded a needle.  I chose to let him walk.  He was a heavy horned hog.  Been on this quest since 2006.

Unicorn for me, my buddy drew a cow tag for the Colockum so I'll be concentrating on helping him be successful. I've shot one unicorn in my life, hoping a sasquatch will befriend me and point me in the right direction.

3pt or antlerless.  I probably won't shoot a cow but I will be shooting the first legal bull I encounter.  Archery elk in Western WA is hard.

Ideal situation is I get a bull mid-season.  That will give me good time in the woods, time to butcher it myself and time to get some coho fishing in after the butchering is done.

Can't wait.
