I was incredibly fortunate and drew the Oct 15 - 31st unit 49 rifle bull tag. I really didnt have much hope for the second drawing and this is my first Controlled hunt in Idaho.
I dont have high expectations as I'll probably only hunt the 15th through the 19th with limited vacation time (already planning time off for Blue Mountains Foothills West tag). Either way, extremely excited and will honestly probably shoot the first bull I see that's 3 point or better.
Part of the fun is figuring out where to go! That being said, with no time to scout and such a big unit, I will throw it out there... Is anyone willing to share any info on where to start/focus? Your help would be greatly appreciated and I would be happy to trade info for anyone who needs it on 342, 352, 360, or 371.
Either way, thank you!

I was in for one of those too. Best of luck, it's a fun tag. I'll be there in November with one of the late buck tags.
-
Since you're so picky on bulls. I'd say hike up 2000' from the road to any ridge top...should get her done.
-
Dont get me wrong. I'm still going to hunt my tail off but with such limited time, I'll settle for a meat bull!

I’ve seen some big bulls the last week of Oct while deer hunting.

Don't get me wrong, but on average it's about a 10 year wait for that tag and it sounds like you're not interested in putting to much effort into it. Took me about 15 years to draw it myself.

Sounds like you are getting the advice you asked for.
I would listen to a couple here that have already posted.
If it were me I'd hunt the last week since it doesn't open until the 15th.
You will regret half a$$ing this tag.

I haven't had the tag and don't know anybody who has... That said, I think I would lean toward the latest part of the season if I only had one trip.
-
I’d put more effort into that elk tag than the deer tag.
-
Wow, this took a turn...
I apologize if I gave you the wrong idea. Due to my job, I cannot commit a bunch of time to this tag. That has nothing to do with my effort or me "half a$$ing" it. I'd be willing to bet that I'll put more effort into this in my short time off then most will over the whole permit season.
Thank you to those who have offered advice. I've been putting a lot of time in already and, with your help, have some good starting points.
With 4 or 5 days to hunt, yes I'll probably shoot the first small bull I see because i like elk meat. That being said, if i find decent sign and things look good, I'll hold out for a decent bull.

Guys that shoot meat bulls on this tag half a$$ it. Guys that put they're time in come out of there with some very solid bulls. I'd be short changing your Washington deer tag I'm favor of an Idaho bull tag.

Putting your expectations of a "trophy" onto someone else is kinda lame..its his hunt

It's as lame as asking for advice while admitting you're not going to put a whole lot of time in a good elk tag.

He said pretty clearly he doesn't have much time

I missed a 360" bull in 49 with my longbow in 05. I archery hunted there last year ( 1st time back there since 05) and didnt get a bull and only saw 15 bulls in 5 days but did see a 320" a 340" and a monster old warrior that was probably a 300"
Shoot me a PM if you would like and I'll try to help if I can

Shoot any bull that you want. I also have not had the tag but do know there’s good quality bulls in there. You drew the tag hunt it anyway you see fit and have a great hunt👍 It’s usually the guys looking for a meat bull that usually kill the monsters anyways 😂 I wish I had detailed info for you but sounds like zwickey actually has the information you asked for. Not sure where some people read your post and decided you were asking what kind of bull you should shoot ha ha. Good luck you should have a great hunt with that tag. I’ve shot some nice bulls but always error on the side of meat in the freezer too.
