I have Mondays off this month so @CP I'm planning on fishing for my favorite salmon at least a few good trips. How are we feeling about the run? Let's share reports as we get into the season.
Tight lines!
-
I was just thinking about it, I will probably be heading out sometime this week as schedule permits.
-
Will do! It's getting to be Coho time. I expect most people will be targeting MA-10 this year since MA-9 is hatchery only.
-
I was out yesterday off West Point to yellow bouy. We landed one about four pounds and lost two at the net. One was a really good size Coho for this early. Didn’t see a lot of nets flying but a few.
It will only get better. Strikes came at 33 to 55 fsw. Ace-hi fly was the ticket for me. Thinking I should put a herring strip on them. Anyone do that? Is it worth the extra step?

Anyone do that? Is it worth the extra step?
Always, salted strips on flies and hoochies.
-
Yeah, me too unless it's dogfish city.
-
I've been fishing a lot, about 3 mornings per week. Went today, went yesterday. There have been tons of coho in MA10, hard to know at this point which ones are still residents and which are ocean fish. We've got a few the last two weekends that were clearly ocean fish, but most are still 4-5 lbs. I got one yesterday that was a tubby 8 lbs.
I always use a herring strip on my hootchie. If I don't have bait, I'll use spoons instead.
-
WaCoues you have been posting some nice fish for sure. I’m hoping we get a lot of those tubby Coho this year.
Anyone have any tips for getting more Coho? I seem to be just lucking in to a couple. Tips anyone? Will salt up some herring for end of the week.

Me too! We've had years here and there when all the fish were small. This is not going to be one of those years, there are some nice fish trickling in. Fish checker at Shilshole said she saw one that was in the 14 lb range!
-
Good news, running from Everett to Edmonds for a 1-fish limit @ 4 pounds last year was pretty lame.

No kidding. I just looked back at the 2019 Everett Derby results...only four fish over 10 lbs for like 2,000 anglers! Don't think that will be the case this year.
-
Sure won't be the same this year, there will probably be 6,000 anglers if it's anything like the other seasons so far.
-
We were out in MA9 last Thursday and seemingly had the whole area to ourselves. Sometimes hardly a boat in sight. Fish and bait were a bit scarce. Will give it another go this week.

the crowds will spread back out into 9 once 10 is closed for chinook also.
-
pretty slow, out all day 4 shakers and one native throw back
-
The wife and I hit area 10 in front of the oil docks on Saturday and Sunday morning. 8am starts both days, the wife does not like to get up early. One coho on Saturday and one on Sunday and that was it for us. I went against my better judgement and stuck around in one spot too long. I think I should have headed to Jeff Head and given it a whirl.. Both came on a UV white Needlefish Ace Hi with a herring strip.
-
I was out on Saturday and Sunday at Possession and it was shakers all day. I'm still looking for how to target the bigger fish.
-
It's been good the last couple weeks. Need to venture around and find them. Shipping lanes was good couple days ago.
-

Yeah, me too unless it's dogfish city.
Seems like every time I run a strip it only attracts dogfish, I’ve even caught them at 3MPH🤷♂️.
I’ve had better success using krill, anise and bloody tuna gels.
-
I’ve caught 3 dogs this year on frickin spoons

That's strange, I hardly ever catch dogfish when I'm coho fishing at coho depths, 90% with a hootchie and herring strip. Can't remember the last one, probably been 50+ rod hours since I caught a dogfish on a hootchie. I catch them quite a bit when I'm fishing spoons for kings. :dunno:
-
Had some luck off Possession this am w/2 hatchery fish in first 30 minutes around the 4 to 5lb mark. Seems like most boats are still sticking to Area 10 so lots of elbow room. Personally had a pretty dismal King Season in Area 9 so refreshing to just get a quick limit.
-
Kids did well today in 11

Dang!! That is outstanding! Congrats! hope it keeps up
-
Fished the oil docks Sunday and 3 decent fish in the boat. 500ft of water at 55' to 75' on the downrigger all caught on plug cut. Spoons and hoochies produced nothing all morning.
-
What are your guys favorite downrigger rods for Silvers/Blackmouth?
Honestly I've fished my MH Shimano TDR's for kings and for those they're fine, and have some Medium's that ive used in the past for silvers and black mouth, but with the fast action they arent much fun on the silvers and smaller kings and being shorter with the fast action i cant get great load on them in the clips
I was going to pick up a few lighter weight downrigger rods but figured i'd poll you guys.
-
Get yourself an 11 or 12 foot noodle rod and a steelhead reel , 12 pound test and have fun
-
Limits 4 days in a row now.
-
Have a vendor that comes in and always talks smack trying to get in on the conversation, we were talking about this fishery and he goes my brother has been killing it out there, got a 54lber and 48lber the other day
-
Limits 4 days in a row now.
Any size yet?

Blessed for sure. Get out there guys, and get the kids involved, it’s good enough right now to keep their attention away from video games. :chuckle:

How's the action today. Running out tomorrow, throwing 2 pots in then heading south.
-
Best of luck H2O

Thanks!

Looks like a pretty thick fog out there. Stay safe.

Plenty clear....got lines out.

1 for 2

Well that was fun. Wife had a good one on but came undone. Right away rid two began dancing and i brought in a little buck, clipped. Just sat down in the back yard with a fresh cup of coffee after a noon breakfast of over easy eggs, tail section cooked quick in bacon grease, bacon, toast, and of course black rifle coffee co in my mug. Had hits on my ace high fly and my go to white and pearly chrome spoon. 40 and 60 feet down. Fished at about 2.7 to 3.1 in the south end of 9 and just getting into 10. Marked little to no bait. Some boats immediately into 9, some off edmonds...we were virtually alone in the middle. Some reports of action on the bar but it's still early. First light wasn't to foggy but really settled in heavy as the morning went. Back at it tomorrow.
-
Nice work. Good eats right there.
-
Good deal. There were several boats in 8-2 on Friday, few in 9 and the fleet at Edmonds. No bait until Edmonds, but I can't remember the last time I cleaned a mature coho in 8-10 that had much in its belly.
-
Any fresh local reports? Will be out Sunday bright and early on the bro in laws boat....so if you see a pontoon that looks way out of place yeah that's us. Running dipsy divers off the sides and a stealtn line with brined herring just back and down.
-
I'm working on mustering a crew for Sunday as well, should happen.
-
I fished West Point yesterday and RB/Oil Docks today, and got done quickly both days. Lots of fish out there, I'm not sure it matters exactly where you are. There was a moment about 7am this morning when I had a fish on and could see four others in my immediate vicinity on at the same time. I suspect the early tide change over the weekend should make for some good results.
-
I was at the oil docks on Friday and hardly any fish caught, maybe you need to go south a bit or I hit it on a bad day? We fished just before daylight for an hour or two before moving. We didn't go south of the oil docks.
-
I went out on Wed
Fished SE side of Bainbridge, Southworth, Vashon area
Herring never got touched
Terrible
Not even a shaker
-
Anyone hearing of the Shilshole boat launch closing through Sunday

Yep:

-
We are still catching them in 11 too.
-
Huntnphool, any suggestions on where to fish 11?
-
I got a call about the Shilshole ramp launch closure and hustled my way to Edmonds to put my boat on the dock. Not sure how they will police Shilshole around 5am, but I won’t be there to worry about it.
-
Mayor said they won't be writing tickets for any closed areas but are requesting people to not use them.
Stay safe tomorrow, thick smoke and tons of fishing boats in a hurry mixed in with a few ferries and random commercial traffic could get interesting. Hopefully no fog on the water in the am.
-
had everything ready to go for tomorrow.
callin it and going sunday. figure tomorrow is going to be a s show with the derby, smoke, early low tide, etc.
i'll do some chores around the house and go out sunday and hopefully itll be a little clearer.
have fun and be safe everyone
-
I’m waiting until Monday
Good luck boys
-
I went out on Wed
Fished SE side of Bainbridge, Southworth, Vashon area
Herring never got touched
Terrible
Not even a shaker
I've been getting them out there. A rod with 2-4oz. weight, a cut plug herring on a double hook rig drug behind the boat out about 50'. That one has gotten a lot of fish. Also fishing in deep water but around 60-80 feet has also been good.
The fish are out there, keep moving around different depths.
-
Thanks for the info
Oh I graphed plenty of fish
Just freakin lockjaw
Weird
Been a bad year for me in the salt
-
Put H20 on the board please. Chunky monkey, dipsy diver, ace high fly naked....off the pontoon boat. Area 9, clipped.
-
Pretty fantastic morning out there today. We fished out deep off oil docks and got done in 90 minutes around the tide change. No wind, super flat, great morning today.
-
Very nice
-
We got one keeper on Saturday between Edmonds and the oil docks using cut plug herring. Didn't get anything to the boat on Sunday. At least there was action on both days.
-
CP and I fished at sunup.....well it was there but good luck seeing it....at shipwreck, then west side bar, then here, there, east side bar.....shaker shaker constant shakers. No keepers, called it. Dead flat water, fog and smoke. Nice morning just unproductive.
-
Same here at Jeff Head
Just about had enough
-
Picked up one, lost a big one and missed 2 bites I saw but didn't get to the rod before they were gone. Decent bite at Edmonds, not red hot but best I've seen this year so far which isn't saying a whole lot.
I had a downrigger go down so I was single rod all day except when I got brave enough to stack 2 flasher combos but that didn't help either.
I didn't see much on the screen and with only one rod it was hard to figure out what depth they were at.
Way foggy, please give boats extra room, no need to cut 20 yards in front of someone at 35 mph. :o
-
The Orcas are in.
-
Looking for intel for tomorrow. How's the muk launch? Crazy? Lotta derby folks out?
-
Looking for intel for tomorrow. How's the muk launch? Crazy? Lotta derby folks out?
I drove by there this morning and the trailer parking was full and overflowing into the car parking areas. Mukilteo's finest will ticket you for parking a trailer in a car slot; unless maybe if you pay the launch fee and pay for 2 car slots.
I can't say how the launching experience was early on.
-
Got it!
-
286 fish checked in for almost 1300 tickets.... Good to see heavier fish though.
I think the weather turned the bite off.

Not bad at all at the launch... got er done. Putted south, put gear out around 630 ish. Stuck one down by edmonds and are currently 1 for 2.
-
My daughter and I got our four this morning before 9:00, heading out again at first light.
-
Looks like MA10 was about .5-1 fish per rod over the weekend from the WDFW creel reports. Many fewer fish checked in the derby compared to last year but bigger fish overall. The weather likely had at least a part to play in the catch on the salt.

From what you have seen, do you think the creel reports have been accurate the last week or two? I haven't been seeing that many nets flying to believe what the creel reports are saying :dunno:
-
Yes and no.
Yes, I think they are accurate in that they report what the angler that was interviewed reported.
No, in that they could be not telling the truth and sometimes there are only a few interviews. I think most people tell the truth as the checkers often need to scan the fish for head tags and there would be no benefit to lying high.
When there are only 2-3 boats interviewed I don't place much weight on that, but when there are 100, I think it's very accurate on what was killed. Both MA9 and 10 are big areas and particularly with the smoke you can only see the immediate area around, so it could be hot a short ways away and you wouldn't see it.
-
We got our fish in 11 the last couple days, but it’s starting to take a bit longer.
-
I think more fish were caught than weighed in or checked.
How long do you think we have fishable numbers in 9 and 10....another week? Two?
-
Usually end of the month. WDFW often calls the end more than the fish. I’ve done best right up to the closure.

Jinxed myself I guess, zippo going on at Edmonds or Shipwreck today. Probably more coming in soon but who knows. I only saw one seal all day and a commercial at Edmonds pulled a blank net out of the water which pretty much crushed my spirit.
-
Took us less than a half hour this morning in 10. no where near anyone else.
-
i might try for one more trip this weekend before its waiting for black mouth season.
WA muzzy elk right around the corner and a week after that it's off to idaho for rifle elk. october will be busy
-
Made it back out today in MA10 after a two week hiatus. Heard it was bad the last several days with the rain/weather, but fishing was good today with the settled weather and flat water. Fish checker at Shilshole had checked 18 limits when I came in around 10. Got my two in about 90 minutes around the morning low tide change. Should be good this week with the better weather. Go get 'em while you can, lock jaw is coming soon!
-
We are going to give 11 a try again in the morning.
-
I'm headed to Edmonds with the family Sat morning for the last trip of the season, creel reports look iffy, most days 1 fish/boat or less. Any recent action there?
-
Take your crab pots with you tomorrow, it opened again yesterday. Imagine it should be good after being closed for a few weeks.
-
Yeah, I have them put away, but will probably throw two pots on the way down just for fun as I have some coho carcasses in the freezer I don't really want to keep in there until next July.
-
I would imagine a new school should wander through soon. The western straights are still lights out. Good size fish to.
-

11 has slowed way down, only got two on Tuesday and put my boat away likely for a while.

With the salt water doing as well as it has been, does anyone think theyll open some of these rivers that dont list a season in the regs? Like the Sky/Snoqualmie for example.

I don't think they will open the Snohomish system but they did increase the limit on the Skagit.
Hatchery coho limit to increase in Skagit River
