Title: Any CZ 17 Hornet Users Here ?
Post by: Rat44 on September 07, 2020, 02:49:54 PM
I am thinking about purchasing a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet.
Looked at the available options as far as rifles and don't care for the Savages and the Ruger is not available in a wood stock version that I know of.
Thought about a TC but don't see anybody making barrels for the Contender or G2.
So its down to the Varmint or American so far.
Any body using these in the field ?

I was in your shoes a year ago. I bought a ruger with a wood laminate stock. Absolutely love the round and the gun. I also have a cz in .223 and have been around cz’s a lot. Cz 527’s shoot amazing! The only reason I went with the ruger is I wanted a shorter barrel.
The 17 hornet is a really potent little round, I’ve killed upwards of 50 squirrels, 1 coyote, and a crow. It absolutely vaporizes squirrels. Bang flopped the bigger stuff as well. You’ll love it when you get it!

Its going to be a field gun so I am looking at a light option to carry around.
I have already started to collect ammo.
Still deciding on what dies to get .

I have two CZ Varmint model 17 Hornets.  They're a really fun little gun and both of mine shoot very well.  They're probably the quietest centerfire I've ever shot yet they still are fairly potent.  I shoot mine suppressed so they're really quiet but even without a can screwed on the end they're not all that loud.  I know they'll kill coyotes, not much won't, they'd just never be my first choice.  They work great on ground squirrels, prairie dogs, and rock chucks.

As for reloading for the 17 Hornady Hornet, they aren't anymore or less difficult to reload for than any other CF but they do have certain quirks about them.  I prefer to use a Redding bushing neck size only die.  The neck thickness on the brass has a pretty big variance in it from lot to lot so I prefer using a bushing die to keep the neck tension all the same.

Also, the CZ are fed through a single stack magazine and the feeding can sometimes be a bit temperamental but there are little tricks to getting them to feed reliably so don't let it be a deal breaker.

Found out EABCO makes barrels for the Contender and G2 also.
Used to own a Contender back in the 80's.
Do the new ones have a decent trigger ?
Just trying to keep my options open.
