Sitting with my daughter glassing the hills and bottoms this year, I look up the draw to the ridgeline to my right and see some dumb ass standing there with nothing but blue sky behind him. Thanks to this brain cell challenged weekend warrior I was able to teach her her first lesson of the day. I then lift my binos to see what a complete moron actually looks like, only to find he is looking at us through his rifle scope. After I shook the disbelief out of my head :bash: I lost it. Ruining any chance of a buck sticking around I yelled up at this retard, calling him everything in the book. Just wondering if any of you have run into this before. Oh, and if the dumb ass that did it is reading this, your lucky I couldn't find you down by the cars, my daughter would have learned another lesson at your expense. :beatdeadhorse:

It is scary how many people don't carry binos. I have seen many idiots glassing through their scopes. One of my first bad hunting memories was of my grandfather swearing at an idiot looking through his scope at us. I was not hunting, just tagging along, I think I was bour 8 or 9. My grandpa had me lay behind the log we were sitting at while he called the guy every name in the book. I learned a good lesson or two that day. Don't piss grandpa off and carry binos when hunting.
-
the samething happened to bridger and I while hunting elk in the blues last week, I think there would be alot more a&$ whoopins in the woods if everyone wasn't packing heat
-
"I learned a good lesson or two that day. Don't piss grandpa off"
LOL, I learned that as a young man myself, I swear I can still feel the "lessons" today.
-
"the samething happened to bridger and I while hunting elk in the blues last week,"
Are you serious, what the hell is going on out there? I have a feeling that with 600 people on here, we have hit home with someone on this one. They are going to read this and go "hmmm, I guess I'm not supposed to do that".
-
I have had that happen to me a few times. The last time I saw something close to that was in eastern,wa.I watched this knucklehead across the canyon throw up his rifle at anything that moved. He did push a 4pt whitey to me that I first glassed with my binocs and then shot him.
-
I've had lead zipping past my ears on two different occasions and I can't say that I cared for it much. One time I was watching a dink 2 pt and these 2 kids came up over the ridge top and they seen this deer and it sounded like WWIII broke lose. Thank godness they were *censored*ty shots because I was only about 60 yds in there direct line of fire. That pretty much is why I hunt with a muzzy now.
-
That's why I bowhunt!!!
-
I too have seen this happen many times throughout my hunting years. I'm betting that some of these hunters that do this are too lazy to carry binocs on them cause they are too heavy or get in their way too much for them or that's their thought. Heck, I usually carry 2 pair with me just in case one gets broke. In the past when someone points their gun towards me, I just tell them they are #1 through sign language. Hopefully they get the clue and I'm not yelling and scarin the game off.
-
why not write " get that scope off me or else" on your orange? I have had my run in with a slob hunter, I did the wrong thing and lost my cool, he did the wrong thing and showed his wife/hunting partner that he was a slob hunter and not much of a fighter
-
Just look at them back through your scope and rifle :)
I've always wanted to do that, but just never could. But, they might get the hint or they might not. It happened twice to me and my wife this year rifle hunting and I'll never go again. We usually bow hunt, but wanted to rifle hunt this year, mistake on our side. Never again

Hunting above McDaniel lake in area 356 during the center fire deer season I came into a clearing with a few aspens but otherwise open ground for several hundred yards in each direction. I was maybe 50 or 75 yards into the clearing intending to cross it when I noticed a small sliver of what looked like blaze orange on the hill at the far end of the clearing. I put my binoculars on it and it was a person in full sniper mode looking at me through his scope. Distance was probably 150 yds. and I was standing in the open, no real need to put the scope on me. Not sure what the blaze orange was from, either his orange vest stuck in his pack or part of the pack itself but he sure wasn't wearing any.
We looked at each other for what seemed like minutes but was probably only twenty or thirty seconds when I finally lowered my binoculars and decided to take myself over the side of the hill at the bottom of the clearing and proceed on through the timber.
I became increasingly angry, and I'm a pretty level headed guy. It would not have taken much to circle around him and get very close from the ridge behind him. Maybe ten or fifteen yards. I've seen the elephant so I know a little about gunfights and this would probably lead to one so I hiked back to my truck and went back to camp.
Over the next couple of days I thought back on this incident a lot. Eventually I quit hunting with two days of the season left. I can still work up a lot of anger just going over it in my mind. The part that enrages me is that when he saw me put the binoculars on him and he knew I was looking right at him he did not take the rifle off of me. It really looked like he intended to shoot me.
Still bothers me. Sorry for the rant but I've been looking for an opportunity to get this off my chest.

Here's a story told to me at work. The tin man stopped in at the check point with his Dad when he was a youngster. While they were there, a man with duct tape on his mouth and his rifle duct taped around his arms in the shape of a man on a crucifix, came out of the woods towards the check point. The man looked exhausted and beaten up with bruises on his face. The duct tape read, "this man tried to shoot me."

I've had it happen and had about th same reaction as you. I've also been shot at before, I mean at, not by. My brother and I jumped behind a log, and he put one back between the guys legs. Not neccessarily what I would recommend, but I guess it got the point across. I got splatterd with blood from a two point, yep, I said two point opening morning one time up in the methow. That also pissed me off. The guy hd know clue. I was so mad I could hve wen to jail on that one. I told him here is your illiegal deer and walked away so as not to go to jail. I met another guy who was coming over to see the kill, and told him. He did the lecturing for me. The guy tried to get the deer out, but he didn't beat the cell phone call, and got nailed.

I have had guys "scope" me out up at Vail several times. Each time I lobbed a couple of rounds into the dirt in front of me to make my anger known and to mess up any chance of them seeing any critters in that area. My cousins and I quit hunting Teanaway because of the "citiots" shooting at everything that moves. My cousin was taking a "constitution" a bout 100 yards off of the road. (This is the same cousin who has shot 3 bucks while taking a dump, 2 of which were at Teanaway) When he was done he got this weird feeling and started to look around with his binocs only to find a guy with his scope honed in on him. This was before the orange requirement. All of a sudden the dude shoots and missed only due to the fact that he was shooting through a bunch of brush and the bullet luckily was deflected. My cousin put a round into the hood of the dudes brand new truck and got the hell out of dodge. When he got back to camp and told us what had happened we piled in our rigs to go have a little talk with the dude. All we found was his rig with a big puddle underneath it. He must have gotten a ride into town because we drove all the way to the little store looking for him. The very next day a man was shot from the road while he was crawling across a steep slide on the other side of the river. The dude thought he was a bear, hit him at nearly 400 yards and didnt realize what he had done until he hiked up and foud the guy wearing all dark camo clothing lyind dead. He turned himself in and I dont know what ever happened after that. That was the last year we hunted Teanaway and decided to hunt Chelan and then Republic where there were far fewer "citiots". Our last couple of years at Teanaway we would find on average 4-6 does that were shot and left to rot. My last couple of years hunting rifle in Republic (about 12+ years ago) it was turning out to be just like Teanaway. Lots of dead does and sub-legal bucks left to rot. Citiot roadhunters are the main reason that I switched to archery. Plus the seasons are much better.
-
I hunt the Teanaway and could see that happening, not that I do, but there are so many people out there its unbelievable. That's why we hunt up really high and get away from all the morons that call themselves hunters.
-
I think I tripped over your cousin's pile :chuckle:. It's hard to find areas that aren't overpopulated with hunters during modern season on public land. Just gettin friggin crazy :bash:. Guess I should blow the dust of my bow and start going archery again. A little safer ya know! Even up high in the Teanaway there are too many hunters. Not as many but still they are there. That's were I go also. Just takes me 3 times as long to get there these days.

"I can still work up a lot of anger just going over it in my mind."
Hey DJR, no need to apologize for the rant, I hear ya. This happened on the 20th and I just got all PO'd about it again last night while reading someone Else's post about something.
I am just amazed how many of us have had similar experiences with these "citioits", good word polarbear!!!! :chuckle: I don't think I will ever look at the Declaration of Independence the same again either ;D
-
How recent are these instances? Because when I here these types of stories they are usually from my fathers generation before hunter orange and hunter education requirements. I'm just wondering if it has gotten safer or more dangerous.
West of Goldendale can have alot of hunters. I spooked a deer and a shot went wizzing by me so I hit the deck. I never went back. Many deer but too many hunters. I didn't feel angry but just that it was dangerous when too many hunters are in the same area.
-
Hey Palmer, I don't know how recent the others were but mine happened a couple weeks ago.

This topic brings back bad memories; and is why I too now mainly bow hunt. One of my worst encouters was up near Springdale during the buck hunt a few years back. I had spotted and was watching some does on the hill side above me when I here a truck coming up a road about 200 yards below me. When the truck comes into view, it was chalk full of rednecks (a full cab and two guys in the bed with guns propped on the cab). As soon as they spot me all guns go into my direction. Being more pissed then smart at the time I make my way down to confront them. As, I am having a discussion with the driver one of the guys in the bed finally spots the does above and points the gun through me to look at the deer. At this point it took every ounce of restraint not to "OK Corral" it out with them right then and there(thankfully I have a family). Realizing I was not dealing with a complete brain in the whole truck and being severely out gunned I walked away and turned them into F&G, and in typical F&G fashion never heard back a thing. But probally the worst part about this whole incident was there was a little kid in the truck with all these stupid Aholes. So, the stupidity continues thru the generations... >:(

The incident that happened to me was on the 15th or 16th of last month. After many years of archery and muzzle loader hunting I thought I'd give the center fire season another look. Not sure what I'm going to do next season.

Should we be calling the wdfw and letting them know where and when these incidences are happening. Every year its probably the same ahole in the same location at the same time of the year.

"Should we be calling the wdfw and letting them know where and when these incidences are happening."
This brings up a another question. Last year my brother and I spotted a "super forky" in the Twisp River Valley area and watched him a couple mornings in a row. I was sitting in the middle of a draw and he was sitting a couple draws over. This buck stayed in the same area for the two days we saw him. Glassing on the second morning I spotted him with a couple does working the bottoms below me and heading toward my brother. I let my brother know on the radio that the big 2 we had been seeing was heading his way and to watch to see if he kicked up any others. After sitting for a few hours I got up and headed back toward the truck, which my brother had already reached. I made it over to the last ridge and spotted a hunter down in the bottom following that big 2 point. The buck was wide for a 2, maybe 25"-26" and pretty heavy. Anyhow I watched this guy follow it over a low saddle toward the dirt road. I got on the radio and had my brother drive down the road and watch this guy come over the saddle to see if he was really after that 2. Sure enough, my brother called me back and said the guy was aiming at him once he crested the ridge. "BANG" I couldn't believe it. I walked down the hill to the saddle they went over and saw the guy over the buck. I went down and looked it and sure enough the Swaros hadn't let me down, it was a big 2 point with nobs on his bases. I asked the guy if he knew it was 3 point or better and he said "this is a 3 point". He then pointed at the little nobs, about 1/4" long and said "see" I just said good luck with that and left. My brother was sitting watching the whole thing and picked me up and drove me up the road to my car. I got in the car and went into town to the police station. They got in touch with the game officer in the area and put me on the phone. While I was on the phone with him my cell phone rang and it was my brother telling me that the guy dragged the deer down the hill to a house directly below where he had dropped the deer. They drug it into the garage and hung it up. I left this info with the game cop and he said he knew who lived there and would go check it out. My question is, how do we as witnesses find out what ever happend? If this guy got off because he is a local I would be PO'd to say the least.............rf

"If this guy got off because he is a local I would be PO'd to say the least.............rf"
I hate to say it but it happens all the time. I have seen it first hand. Serious poaching violation at and they turned their heads. Pissed me off more than you know but I have had to just let it go. You can only do your part and turn them in, what ever happens after that I guess they have to live with.
Same thing as people who get off with speeding, drunk driving, ect because they know the officer. It sucks that this happens but sad to say it does!!!
No answer for you as to what we should do. I have decided to quite call DFW in my area when I see crap like this. Tired of wasting my time.
-
Nothing like modern firearm seasons in this state in easily accessible areas.

You said it Ridge...

Should we be calling the wdfw and letting them know where and when these incidences are happening
is it a legal/illegal matter or a safe/unsafe matter?
not sure what the dfw is gonna do because someone is being unsafe...they have a hard enough time when someone turns a guy in for poaching. they sure aren't gonna run around slapping guys on the wrists for not being safe.

I understand the anger toward idiot hunters but, I hope some of this return fire crap is just macho talk. Christ, Washington modern seasons are insane. :o Go down and kick the guys ass if he needs it, but to shoot towards another person on purpose is downright ludicrous, unless your in Iraq or Afganistan.

Your last sentance is exactly my point. :o
