Last year I left WA for MT on 11/14 for the week for deer hunting. I’m headed over a week earlier this year. I’m headed out on 11/6. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s a difference on the deer behavior. When are y’all headed over for your deer hunts?
-
We are leaving the 5th. Can’t come soon enough
-
My daughter and I will be over there for the week before thanksgiving if my parents health holds out. I often wonder about all the bucks that are harvested before we show up, but someone in the group usually shoots a better than average 4 point. It's been nice to take the kids there because they will get multiple opportunities and are likely to shoot a 4 point.
-
Leaving Saturday for a week of antelope hunting then will stay on for deer week one.
-
I will be heading over to fill my elk tag after I get back from Alaska, looking like next Saturday I will be heading out. Looking at the area between big timber and Columbus

You should see a difference in people if nothing else. I'm headed over early Nov as well. I used to do the opener, but then asked myself why I would deal with the first few or last few days, so I shoot for somewhere in the middle.
-
Just got here for the youth opener. Kids are ready to go for the morning.

Seems to make perfect sense..

Headed to Utah this morning for my buck hunt! Starts Saturday, my first ever out of state hunt. Gonna be awesome!
-
Will you be using Llama's?
-
Headed out 10/22 hunt the first week this year. Last year hunted the third week and didn't see an elk and only two-point mule deer. Wish I was still a resident and had five weeks.
-
Will you be using Llama's?
Not this trip, not really any backcountry or areas I can’t reach with the quad and a hike.
-
Heading to Western Montana to hunt mainly whitetails on the 21st. Hoping for some cold weather, few inches of snow and rut in full swing
-
Leave here 11/16 for 10 days.
-
Roll out on Nov 8th for 2 weeks!
-
I will be heading out around the 8th as well! Mine will be a turn and burn trip though. Wish I could get 2 weeks! Good luck to all of ya over there👍🏻

Think I I'm heading that way on the 14th of November.
-
I'm probably going to be there Thanksgiving week. But I may get antsy and head out the week before.

My question is what do I do with an elk and deer tag in my pocket? I'll probably focus on elk and shoot a deer if given a chance.

13th or 14th for deer.

I'll be leaving on the 6th-15th.

Leaving in 45 minutes!!!!! Bitterroot Elk hunt. Going back Nov 17 for deer.
-
Rub it in
-
Is the rut timing similar to eastern Wa?
-
Holy smokes, just looked at the weather again, only have to pack for 62 degrees and sun one day and 2 degrees a couple days later. I actually threw it a tube of sunblock, I hate getting my face burned off in the mountains.
-
I saw that too it’s going to be awesome. We will get there Friday with a high of 60 and Saturday is snowing and a high of 30 low of 3 on Sunday. Should keep the deer moving and we won’t have to deal with mud with those temps
-
Leaving Washington the 14th
6 in my party
Staying until the 27th
Should be a hoot
This app is pretty good for looking ahead in regards to road conditions

Had to call the tip line today.☹️
Good opportunity to talk with my son about how dicey decisions often lead to a downward spiral. You think you will just push this one thing that isn’t too terrible, but that often creates a situation where you then have to do dumb thing #2 to fix poor decision 1, and then you end up with a real mess.
It’s like chess, think two moves ahead. We pretty much predicted exactly what was going to happen before the first shot. Anyone not emotionally involved would have seen it clear as day.

Cliffhanger ?

Like reading Shakespeare, someone will have to explain it to me. :dunno:

Cliffhanger ?
:yeah:
Nothing too out of the ordinary, couple of tickets issued, at least two wounded animals not located, hunter had one tag. Chasing the animals ended up with trespassing. I was pretty impressed, I called the tip line, got a call back from the warden in about 45 minutes and he was at the location. I called in WA one time and got a call back 4 days later.
Last year I witnessed a bigger rodeo, two elk shot 30 minutes before light, one or two wounded (probably by the same guy) and the warden happened to be on the hill above the road watching. A few truths were stretched and I happened to meet the warden later that day at the gas station and he had to go get a new ticket pad after that one. They split the guys up, had 2 wardens and 2 sheriffs and got 4 different stories from 4 guys. Apparently you are not doing yourself any favors lying when the warden saw 100% of what happened.
-
In Wa your lucky to get a call back, I never have
-
We watched people shoot a 2pt in WA a few years back and wdfw did nothing.
-
Well we left on the sixth and will be home in the 8th! Not to bad from Bonney lake to broadus and back!
-
Nice looking buck
-
For those of you who are heading over today conditions are nasty!!
-
2nd that! We are in NE MT right now and it's blowing snow sideways. Supposed to do this until tomorrow afternoon. Deer a holed up pretty good right now. No long range looking for a bit until it clears up. Main roads are starting to drift and the field roads are getting dicey! Should be awesome when it does clear up. Seen over 250 deer yesterday and 36 bucks. 5 or 6 were shooter size for us, just didn't make it happen. Be here until next weekend. Good luck to everyone who is out and be safe!
-
Nice buck
Good luck everyone
-
Wow 250 deer! Is that normal for Montana?
-
IDK? First time hunting late mule deer in MT, but they were all over. A little different today. But, the conditions sucked. One of my partners did shoot a nice 5x5 muley late this am. Hopefully the snow dies down and we can see the deer tomorrow
-
Don't plan on buying any left over doe tags, they are sold out for Region 7, Broadus area. :bash:
-
You guys have much different conditions than I did. I'm pulling smelly, sweaty sweatshirts out of bins and doing laundry. I never did wear my late boots or puffy coat.
I had a honey hole for does, so I "saved" a bunch with a doe tag on top of my antelope draw. Every year for 6-7 years, the does just come streaming out onto this field. Perfect, I'll put another one in the freezer this year.
Sat two nights and watched buck after buck walk by and only two does. I went from the scope to the gun about 10 minutes before shooting deadline and couldn't figure out which one was the doe (two spikes that looked very close to does were all mixing around together). I didn't want to have to call the warden on myself, so pass.
Next day, no problem, adjusted makeshift blind position to be closer to their path so we would be on them sooner and have more light to see.
Huge bruiser buck with a limp walks out, then a solid buck a class smaller, the two forky twins, and another decent buck walked to 77 yards no does.....
I learned my lesson on frugality for sure. It hurts a lot less putting an any deer tag on a doe than it does bringing a doe tag back home.
Good luck to you guys!
-
There was morning snow, wind and cold this morning. Snow let up and wind and cold the rest of the day in Broadus. Deer are in the private land fields in early morning and late afternoon. Doesn't seem to be any rut activity going on yet.
-
Wow 250 deer! Is that normal for Montana?
Some areas yes . But you have to weed out alot of those Deer to find the one .
-
Heading over Friday AM, just in time for the Pineapple Express :bash:
-
Can’t change the weather bud
We are leaving this weekend also
Was hoping for cold
They always say plan for 6-60
-
Supposed to warm up?

Locked in 17-27
Motel reservations and 6 guys
Warm or not should be rutting between now and then
-
Loading the truck & planning on leaving in the am. (Boy I take a lot of stuff). Praying for good roads on the way over. Be safe & take lots of pics HW members.
-
I'm just whining for fun, gonna be a blast. Buddy moved over last year so I'm getting exposed to some solid quality so far this year with the wet spring.
Good luck to all.
-
It may not be the best for hunting, but it sure is nice not having to pack gloves, coat, big boots and then dry everything out every night. I forgot how easy it is to move around when you aren't bundled up like the Stay Puffed man.
-
We’re in eastern Montana now. Tagged out on bucks and does. Mule deer are starting to chase. Bucks with does all over.
-
Heading over Friday AM, just in time for the Pineapple Express :bash:
Forgot to mention you should call it chinook winds if you want to sound like a local. Pretty common, especially in central MT for wind changes from the south to warm stuff up. One year I skied at -20 one Saturday and +60 the next Saturday. I was hoping to get a 100 degree swing before I graduated college, but only managed 80.
-
The hunting is great now in eastern MT. Got mine last night. Bucks with does, and lots of chasing going on. Weather is cold here!
-
Hopefully be there this time next week. Any deer hunters seeing elk?
-
Headed out Saturday. Can’t wait! Buddy left today
-
I’m packed and ready
Any pictures to share from those that have tagged out ?
I need some horn porn
-
I was hoping the guy driving through Billings in a silver tundra was going to post his buck! Really big muley propped up nice and high. I believe the guy had Washington plates
-
We left Broadus yesterday morning and it looked like the rut was starting in. :bash: Snow on the ground from Broadus to St. Regis but the roads are fine, some slush in places.
-
Came home today and roads were great from eastern MT. This is my buck, rough scores 150
-
Buddy tagged out last night. Here’s mine! Rolling out today!

Drove over 4 days ago and it was 5 degrees. Today it’s about 40 degrees and has been blowing 20-40mph for the last day and a half. No deer tags this year but having fun shooting coyotes and hanging out.

We are still planning on leaving late friday night to be to our spot first light saturday morning. More travel restrictions in 3....2...1....
-
Over here in Eastern Montana now. Jordan area. Rut is really kicking in now!
-
Just got back. The last 3 days the side roads were getting a little greasy with the warmer weather [50+ degree highs]. Hoping it cools down. Best year in a long time for pheasants & sharptails spotted. Bring a shotgun in case you tag out early.
-

Yah I'll second that!! Bring a shotty of you ha ent left home yet. I left mine at home :bash:

Been here since Monday afternoon, rut has been non- existent, alot of small bucks 2x2s , 3x3s , young 4s . Did see a Dark , heavy , tall , wide 26"+ , super deep forks 2x3 w/ eye guards today thought about dropping the hammer but he had that stupid 2" long 3rd point . Not nearly the number of Deer seen this year as the past 3 years . Still have 5 days left .
-
Rut started Wednesday with little bucks with does and Thursday started seeing bigger bucks with does. The lack of weather was a real factor.
-
We're all done. I'll try to post pics soon. These deer are so dumb right now. I hope I didn't act like this when I was a teenager!
-
Rut is kicking in now . Buddy got one yesterday , me one today , one tag left . Heres a teaser of mine :chuckle:
-
Anyone getting their's tested for CWD?
-
Anyone getting their's tested for CWD?
I got an email stating the stations are closed because of Covid .
-
We didnt get tested anywhere but have to bone out and skull cap.
-
In Broadus they were only there on Mondays to test when we were there a couple weeks ago. Can't remember what day for Ashland.
-

Which sucks if you want a European mount . I had to have a local Taxi do mine last year ( and wait 9 months for it :'( )
Hes caping mine out this year and skull capping it so I can bring it home to a local Taxi
-
The passes were terrible for us but we had a great time too. Drive safe everyone.
-
Got back last week. Saw a ton of deer, but not much rut action (I was there 11/7-11/13). I lucked out and got a nice litter 3x4 and a fatty solo doe. Was a great trip, but the drive home was suuuuuper sketchy at best. They even shut down I-90 due to severe winds. Made it without incident. Awesome trip and can’t wait to go back for another round!
-

Assuming you are taking I90 back, you can drop the sample off at the FWP office in Bozeman or even mail it to them.
-
Shot a weird one today. One side was an inline 4 point. The other side was normal. Still real slow here. Tons of does but no bucks chasing them (other than spikes and little forkys). This is about the biggest one I've seen. He was just eating with a group of does...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201123/8c471f4c759020d831f94e4b2f358b43.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201123/06e8b07b789b687ec671055087de2bfa.jpg)

Cool deer looks like WT in his genes
-
We were there the 6th to 11th. Before/After the blizzard deer were out everywhere. and the bucks were rutting hard, but most groups of does had small ones with them pushing the does. Seemed like a lot of groups had the big bucks shot already. Saw lots of small bucks cruising for does. We filled all 3 buck tags and 4 doe tags we had between three of us but didn’t see any true monsters this year. We Found one hot doe with three bucks on her and was able to fill three tags at once and let the smallest buck walk. Overall saw normal amount of deer just not the quantity of decent bucks. Here’s mine. 21 inch wide 3 point with eye guards
-
Congrats everyone. Love seeing all the success!
-
Nice buck was he rutting hard

No velvet
-
I watched this deer for 3 plus hours debating on whether to attempt a stalk and try to take him. There was a couple of larger deer spotted earlier in the trip but I wasn’t able to locate either of them the next day and with the forecasted warmer temps the roads had already started to get greasy in the afternoon. Mr. Buck finally decided to head up the ridge I was on with his does on the way to the haystacks for their nightly raid. I was able to close the deal at about 80 yards.
Huge thanks to my buddy for helping me load the deer off the hill and hang it overnight. He also used the big green beast to pull me out of the snowdrift I buried my truck in the day before. :bash: Congrats to all of you that were lucky enough to hunt MT this year.
-
I don’t know how many small 4’s I passed on but this big bodied 2x3 was good enough for me. 26” wide
-
Still in Velvet

We saw a couple cactus bucks in velvet this year.

Nice buck . We saw alot of Velvet bucks this year for some reason .
-
Sweet bucks! There has been a wild amount of Still in Velvet bucks taken this year.
-
Yeah just an empty sack on him. Which is weird because he acted “rutty” seemed to be following a doe for a while and even ran off a couple smaller bucks.
Seems to be pretty common in Montana this year, not sure why though. One theory is that they literally froze their balls off?
-
Our trip was pretty quick, but successful!
-
Planned a trip with 5 of my first timer buds to MT , plus myself
Got back yesterday
We went 5 for 6 with one guy had chances on decent bucks he chose not to shoot
Great trip
Beautiful scenery and saw thousands of deer over a 10 day trip with many many bucks
These were all taken on public land
Weather and grasshoppers over the summer made it tougher than last couple years
No snow but cold in mornings
Here’s our deer
I think we did pretty good for a bunch of old guys
