okay I was wondering if there was one caliber that edges out all the others as a general purpose round. Bad guy protection, animal protection, hiking and hunting I like the 44mag but I think the 357mag might have the edge as a all around cartridge. What are your thoughts.
-
If your not worried about conceal carry.....I would consider the 454 casull which you can shoot 45 long colt out of. 454 for back woods predator defense and 45 long colt for bad guy protection.
With that said....if you are looking to conceal carry a revolver, I would look at the .357 that can also shoot .38. All are sufficient for bad guys but some are better big critters, depending on where you plan to carry it and hunt.
-
I went .357, it seems to be the sweet spot and that round also seems to outperform it's paper specs. I might have to think about it for elk or bear, but then again I would have to think about why I would want to even consider such a thing.
You can reasonably shoot small barrel, lightweight .357 where the .44 and larger require more gun and are really not fun in compact versions for hiking and concealed carry.
If it was strictly for hunting or get around AK bears I would go bigger (probably 12 gauge 18" barrel), but for all around lower 48 stuff, I like .357.
-
True but I wouldn't want to depend on a 454 to stop a Grizzly in its tracks nor a 12 gage or 45-70 and most people can't or won't shoot a 454 so for general purpose I still think the 357 has the edge very wide power range, amo excesibility short barrel to long barrel to carbine same with the 44mag but I still think the edge goes to the 357

Or a .460 s&w which can shoot all 3. That kind of versatility is nice in times like these when ammo availability is crap.

:yeah:
Love my 460.

What does that beast weigh when loaded?
-
Yup, very sexy.
I'd bet 7 lbs loaded, never weighed it.
-
Dunno, a lot. But when it comes time to pull the trigger youre glad for every ounce.
-
I have had many 22,357,44 and now 9 mm's over the years .
Now carry a SW 69 mostly in the woods.
Small frame, easy to carry and will handle everything from plinking and shot loads to "oow that hurt" stuff.
-
Unless you were going to be in Grizzly country, in a revolver, I'd probably opt for one of the 8 shot 357's.
-
357/38
-
Love my 454
-
Leaving big bears off the table, I really think a .44 special checks a lot t of boxes. I also think that if a guy were utterly proficient with a ruger Blackhawk .45 colt with a shorter barrel that could almost be perfect

44mag/44 special

44mag/44 special
I also like the 41 Mag,

If Smith and Wesson would make their L-frame 5 shot in 41 magnum I wouldn't need anything else. Until then I guess I'll pack my Smith 69.

I am surprised the 41 hasn't become more popular.
That would be a good setup though .
My son has been looking at the 10 mm.
Pretty much a 41 in an autoloader friendly cartridge.

.45 Colt.

Not quite. 10mm can barely match .357 and isn’t close to 41 mag.

I have a 380, 357mag,10mm,41mag,44special,44mag-i carry the 44special,its light and I can hit target at short range, its the son of sam special, not worth much, its the gun I sleep and hike with,as a side note I took my motor bike to backside of harts pass to azurite mine, left my supper redhawk hanging on motorcycle walked ridgeline, spotted big bear at about 1200yds,watched him coming way to about 600yds and went oh no took off at a dead run looking over my shoulder, don't like carrying heavy guns, just like to shoot them.
-
I said, I liked the 41 mag, but the 41 mag S&W Model 57, 3 in, filed hammer, with Pachmayr grips.
Was the single worst shooter I ever owned. You could not hit the broadside of a barn from inside the barn.
I won lots of money from people thinking they could shoot, :chuckle:
Biggest turd of a pistol I have owned. :puke:

Unless you were going to be in Grizzly country, in a revolver, I'd probably opt for one of the 8 shot 357's.
Thats my standard sidearm. Seems like the perfect choice to me. 8 rounds of .357 with a 5 inch barrel. Great all around compromise of power, capacity and shootability.
-

My choice would be a Sig P220, in 10 MM.

I’ve got a ruger Redhawk in .45 ACP/colt. For a hand loader it can do it all, plinking with 45 auto out of moon clips, or standard 45 colt loads. You can crank things up a bit with 2400 or blue dot, and get really wild with h110.
I’d consider a .454 or .460 for even more versatility, but it would have to be in a gun I’d like to carry, and I doubt I’d want to shoot either of those from that sort of gun.

Sig 220's are a great pistol, I have a Scorpion 220 but remember, for this discussion the OP was only talking about revolvers.
I don't know a lot about them but I've always liked the looks of the S&W 329 44mag with the alloy frame and titanium cylinder so unless they're a POS I'd maybe give one of those a look if you have a hankering for a 44mag.
The big bore stuff is cool and they deliver thunderous amounts of fire power but I have a S&W 4in 500mag and the X frame is a beast and a pretty sizeable revolver.
-
45lc gets my vote. I handload superlight cast plinkers for the wife and daughter to shoot, clear up to heavy hitters that will match most over the counter .44mag. Even load wax ratshot.
-
45 colt is good if you hand load but normal factory stuff is not plentiful I still think 357mag is the one as long as the big bears aren't in play
-
I have a .44 magnum 329PD and I love the gun. I have it as my backup when archery hunting and sometimes as a CC.
At first the kick was quite sharp when I started shooting it since it is so lightweight, Then I changed out the grips to the rubber grips that are supplied with the gun and it is like a completely different gun. Not that I am super recoil shy but now the gun has serious kick still and .44 mag stopping power but I can go to the range and have a 40 round shooting session without any issues. Wood grips more than 10 rounds and I was over shooting it.
As car as .357 or .44 I don't think you can really go wrong. 10mm if you would rather carry a glock or semi auto but you said revolver.
-
If you reload, the 44 special covers a lot of applications. Something liken the a Mountain Lite is on the large size for concealed carry, but it's doable. Typical self defense loads are basically equal to the 45acp, but you can load them (in appropriate revolvers) with 240gr bullets up to around 1,200fps for defense from 4 legged threats.
-
Gp100. 357 mag

Cowboy loads all the way up to Buffallo Bore are available, just not as plentiful as .38 spl and .357 mag. Handloading is always a plus, and the savings really add up in .45 colt.
-
.45 Colt if you handload. .43 magnum might have the edge as far as availability if you dont. .357 was a round I tried hard to like and just never could get into it for some reason.
-
Two things that will be around forever, the 45 colt and coyotes.
-
Is there a 30-06 revolver out there?

IMO I cant help but pair revolvers with lever guns. Im not sure if its because Ive read too many Louis Lamore books or that pistol caliber lever guns are just so much fun to shoot. Additionally if I only had 2 guns that i had to travel with a revolver and lever gun dont fall into the evil black gun category which is a plus
Since you were asking about revolver rounds i have to say 357 because you can shoot a wide variety of ammo, and the lever gun is fun to shoot. IF however you were more determined for some umph and carbine wallop Id say 44 mag. I dont care for strange cartridges. I dont reload but i do buy in bulk when stuff goes on sale. Your not gonna see a big sale on 41mag. :twocents:
I really like this gun, wish i could find one to shoot.

I'm having a hard time finding .43 magnum. Where do you find it ?

It's hard not to love the revolver/lever combo.

My friend & I each pack the Ruger Blackhawk, 4 5/8" stainless. His is a 44mag, mine is a .357. Pretty identical frame between the two, just different cartridge. Awesome revolvers.

This is a pretty good comparison of 357 and 44 mag performance in both wheel guns and lever guns.
-
I have my 45lc guarding the perimeter. But honestly, my favorite to carry, and the only one I'd grab if I had to wander this earth to protect and survive would be my single six 22mag. Kills everything it shoots, light, and a pill bottle of ammo goes a long way. Two leggeds are the only thing that worries me and it will handle them with ease.
-
Three Fifty Seven magnum revolver all the way. Anything from 110gr .38 Special wadcutters to Buffalo Bore 180gr hard cast bear loads. I've got them all, .44 mag, .41 mag, .45 ACP & Long Colt, vintage .44 Special S&W, but the .357 is my favorite by a mile. I keep a S&W Model 65 with 125gr jacketed hollowpoints by my bedside.

Seen a lotta guys carrying these in Montana. I don't know if its better than spray but having both would make me feel better. Surprising light. Tho I think the .357 version weighs half as much.
-
I love my S&W 627 Performance Center w/5" barrel. 8 shot 357 Mag revolver. Perfectly fine for lower 48 mountain carry handgun. If I'm in Alaska I'd always be packing a much more powerful rifle anyway so didn't want to buy a heavier handgun for that purpose.
-
Since the OP is from around here I assume this is for use in WA in which case .357 should do anything you need.
From 38 special with 105 grain cast over 2 grains of Bullseye, to .357 magnum with 180 grain cast over 15 grains of Lil' Gun.
My grab and go woods carry is a 2.5" Ruger Redhawk. If it needs to be hunting legal then a 4 or 5" L-frame.
-
10mm. Only because then I can use the same ammo in the revolver and the automatic. And assuming that it's just in WA.
-
Honestly a solidly loaded 45 colt will be excellent and not as earsplitting as a .454, .357mag, or .44mag IMO.
However I think my favorite is the .480 Ruger.
Buffalo bore is my favorite ammunition maker by far and they have a great middle ground .45 colt load, 325 grains at like 1,000 fps roughly if I remember. Would do the trick for anything. And they have hotter loads for the .45 colt that are equal or better than a .44 mag.
Behind a stout .45 colt I’d say the above cartridges all are excellent.
357 mag : It’s an excellent round that has proven itself capable of defense against all but the most extreme animals. With a Buffalo bore or Grizzly load I wouldn’t feel undergunned unless I was In Africa. And then only maybe.
.44 mag: The Legendary cartridge that has taken every species of game animal on earth. More recoil than the .357 but not crazy. A good load and your set period.
.454 Casull: *censored*ING BOOM and it’s dead. Significant recoil. Be warned.
.480 Ruger: hear me out, it’s more recoil than a 44 mag but less than. .454. It is an excellent hunting and wildlife defense cartridge. The large bullet diameter doesn’t negotiate with Terrorists, or anything else. IMO it’s an excellent and reasonably shootable round.
