Title: Bear blanket taxidermist?
Post by: Hectocotylus on October 18, 2020, 08:23:38 AM
Shot a beauty yesterday and packed the hide out. I’m in northwest Washington. Anybody have recommendations on how or who to get a blanket/rug type thing made over here?

 :yeah:

Going forward they will have any and all of mu business. We often hear gripes,  righly so about taxis that lack in communication,  have open ended finish dates...etc. They are a professional business and run it as such.

Not huge, not a baby,  just a nice jet black bear. Perfect! Nice job and thanks for sharing.

So will these guys do a hair on tan?  The prices have gone way up for those, still have my bear skin in the freezer from this spring, want a hair on tan, but not spending 1,200 for it.

Nice bear there Hectocoylis!

I have a hide in with Garth and Tammi at Fidalgo from last September.  They are great folks and do top knotch work, so don't want this to sound at all lIke a complaint. More of an FYI. Covid has greatly affected their turnaround time for bear work. The tannery they like to use has been delayed by several months. The last time I checked in with them, she indicated they would no longer be offering to do tan only bear hides. Worth double checking though if that's what you want. .

I shot a bear while archery deer hunting. I had a taxidermist flesh it and cut the feet out of the hide. I bought a tanning kit from the tanning store in Marysville and tanned it myself.

I got a shoulder mount from them not a rug, but Fidalgo Taxidermy did great work.

Last year I harvested an about 2 year old bear that was knocking over my bee hives. I fleshed it myself. It wasn't really that hard. Ears are the most difficult. I opened it up and tacked on a piece of plywood and dried it. Sent it off to Moyle Mink and Tannery. Turned out great. It now resides on the back of a chair.
Cost $179 plus the shipping and whatever a sheet of plywood cost. I recommend 3/4.

It’s almost done drying. I don’t have any pictures. I started last Sunday. All the hair is still on the bear.

Fidalgo doesn’t do hair on tans anymore they are too busy. I found that Rods taxidermy in Arlington does them still, has anyone heard anything about them or have experience with him?

I currently have a bear hide with Rod's Taxidermy.  Having a soft tan done.  He's had it for 16 months now and is having the same problems with the tannery he uses that have been mentioned.  This Covid thing is causing delays.  I talked to him a couple months ago and he was quite frustrated with not getting his stuff back.  He said he had a lot of hides that haven't come back to him.  As far as his work goes, the mounts in his shop look really nice.  It's quality work.
