You are going to see a lot of deer.  It's on you to decide what you want to shoot.  Keep in mind as pressure increases options decrease.  The deer you pass on day may not be there on day 9.  He may be dead or hiding out on property that you don't have access to.

My daughter got lucky and shot the deer she missed on day one on day three.

Good luck.

I hunted 8 days when I had the tag. My goal was 140. I ended up with just that on the second to the last day. Passed on a lot of bucks. I’m sure it’s different from year to year. There was good horn growth this year. May find a good one in a short amount of time. Good luck to you guys!

Had the tag last year with 3 others we all tagged out on bucks. You will find the vast majority of bucks you will find are going to be smaller 3 points. Not saying there isn't 4 points running around because there are and we did see some absolute giants....just you will see them on private property. I shot a small 4x4 near the end of my hunt. But with that being said there is a ton of feel free to hunt and if you put on the miles you will find a buck to shoot. If you are willing to stay off the trigger and are willing to pass on bucks I would say mid 120's to high 130's is very doable. Also pray for no fog because it can make that hunt harder. Good luck

Lots of FFTH land over there.  Drive roads at daylight and dusk.  Deer are moving all day.  When you get to a point that you aren't seeing anything mid day pound the draws and cover near where you see deer.  Later in the season it gets nothing but better.  I believe doe tags open later so you will have more company as the season progresses.

I was over scouting around getting familiar with the area weekend before last. One thing I didnt think about was the doe tags, and pressure that comes with it. How much of a factor are they?

Most folks on the doe permits aren't hunting real hard.  :twocents:

it’s a big area with a lot of units. I wouldn’t worry about pressure at all. I didn’t see one other hunter during my hunt.

The biggest thing is just a couple more rigs driving the roads.  Some guys just get out in their shorts and t-shirts and shoot a doe 30 yards on the uphill side of the road.    :chuckle:

My bad, I think that is correct.  I know it was a blast.  You "totally shot that doe".  :chuckle:

Anyone with this tag, buck or doe, is going to see a ton of deer and hopefully have a great time.

Any advice for a female "adult onset" hunter looking for a whitetail doe in 149? I applied with her so she could piggy back on my doe points I'd otherwise never use.  Plan was for the mule deer tag but I fat fingered the app and put in for the WT tag :bash:  we went out Sunday and saw easily 200 mule deer but only WT we saw was a car hit fawn that I had to put down  :'( I can't go with her this weekend and im beyond annoyed at myself for screwing up the application  :bash:

Thanks Rainier10. The units are 149. 154,162,163 and 166
ahhh yeah 154, 163, 166 days I remember them well...
154 Particulariy but yeah theer is quite a bit of feel free to hunt spot there. Especially along what I call Jasper MT road, or Pleasont MT road between Walla Walla and Dayton. I killed a decent 3pt or 4pt if you count the two 1 inch eyeguards above Dixi a few years ago. But that was during the regular rifle season about midpoint.
The Couse Indians bought some land up ther too and there are some spot you can get in behind the no tresspassing sings as well, I think it's in the 163, or 166 parts. THere is a Keyosk and it shows where. I watched from behind the last Keyosk, depending on if your coming up from the Walla Walla side it's the last heading to Dayton, but coming from Dayton it's the first, I think their are two. But I watched on the hillside behind that and behind the No tresspassing signs over on the finger going down into the canyon sevreral Deer come out then bed down there one day. Up until then I had not been able to get into there for it was always fenced off so never seen that hillside from that perspective but I was Elk Hunting so didn't go after them.
I know those areas quite well hunted them for 30 years. What is that tag for only 4pts or??? shoot me a PM if you want ?

This morning went to where we saw a fair amount of does last night. Nothing.
Found some nice timber and have been into several deer. Couple pretty decent 3s that would be on the ground Tuesday or Wednesday.

Saw a pretty nice heavy 3 chasing a doe this afternoon.  Few more seconds and I would have notched my tag. Saw another small forkie and several does. I think in the morning I'll head back to where I saw the bucks yesterday.

Hunted some incredible timber and logged areas and didnt see a thing in them. Just seemed weird.

Not seeing as many deer as I thought I would other than on the private fields.

Checked out an area this morning that a forum member suggested.  Saw about a dozen does and 1 small basket rack 3.
Moved over to the area I had been hunting previously for the evening hunt. Deer were really moving. Saw 4 small 3 and 4 point bucks. And a couple spikes. Wind absolutely howled all day.

In the morning headed over to where I saw the bigger bucks Sunday.

Well I'm 90% sure I missed at buck this afternoon.  Looked for blood for an hour 30 of that was in the dark and came up with nothing.  Deer was right on the edge of field and bailed back down the hill so I didn't get to see much of a reaction.  Heading back in the morning to keep searching to be 100% sure.   :dunno:

A lot less action today. Saw a small basket rack 4. Then a nicer buck that looked decent but was chasing a doe across a field and was a 1/2 mile away in no time. Just before dark saw another decent buck, but he was also chasing a doe through some timber. No chance at a shot.
Almost took a very small sort of 3x3 this morning just because it was so unique. Small fork with an eye gaurd on 1 side. Small fork on the other. Its forks were so close to the base they looked like eye guards. But it also had about a 3 inch spike coming out about 1/2 way between its main and its eye on the left side!

One more go at it in the morning for a few hours before heading home.

Been meaning to get on here and share the last bit of my Blue mountains Foothills west tag experience. Just been crazy busy.

So Thursday morning was my last chance. We got up the hill to a fine skiff of snow. As the morning progressed the snow picked up and put a nice little layer of white down. I thought it would be good for my grand finale. But there really werent many deer moving. Saw a half dozen does. About 10 a.m. I told my son its time to head down the hill and for home. At the last bit of feel free to hunt area I spotted a couple deer about a 1/2 mile away just below the brim of the field. Through the glasses we could see it was decent buck. He was in hot pursuit of a doe. In no time he was  several hundred yards further away and still moving. Also a little further down in the draw. I decided he was worth a closer look so I headed out in the best route I could find to keep me out of sight. I finally got to where I wanted to be and looked over the edge. Nothing. I stayed just up from the edge of the berm and walked further out. Looking over the edge every 50 yards or so. Finally looked over the edge and he was about 150 yards out. Standing facing me. He was a decent 3 point with great height and mass, but not very wide. I pulled up the rifle and centered the cross hairs for the shot. Watched him through the scope for several seconds. Lowered my rifle and watched him bound away!

I went on this hunt for several reasons. The experience, and being able to spend 5 days with my son seeing lots of animals and several bucks. Also the hope of harvesting a wallhanger. Meaning hopefully a really good 3 but preferably 4 point with eye guards that just looked great. Looking back on it, I had that opportunity my first real morning of hunting. Found 2 really nice wide, heavy bucks that would have been great specimens. As an added bonus they were easy shots and close to the road. I passed on both of those bucks mostly because I wasnt ready for the hunt to end. But I also felt  I would have other good opportunities. Well, over the next several days I had lots of opportunities. But almost all small basket rack 3 and 4 points. I did see a few other really nice bucks, but they had no intention of letting me have a chance at harvesting them. I could have taken several meat bucks, but that wasnt what I was over there for. Plus I have a lot of elk meat in my freezer so I wasnt under any pressure to add to it. As far as deer go I went home empty handed. As far as the hunt and experience goes, it was awesome! Ive been fortunate to have harvested a lot of animals in my life. I still love doing that, but its gotten to the point the experience is more important than the harvest. The harvest is a bonus.

I met a few people while I was there. They were very helpful and friendly. I got a lot of good help and suggestions from the Huntwa crew. I had several people reach out to me unexpectedly while I was over there by text and pm with lots of good info. I can't thank all of you enough for helping to make this an incredible experience. Because of all of you I was able to come home from what I would consider a succesful hunt!

I also had 3 days to hunt late buck around home. Passed up 3 spikes and a nice branched buck. Maybe next year will be a harvest year!

Sounds like a very successful year. Thanks for the update on how the season ended. Fun hunts don’t always end with a notched tag.

Great write up. A hunt can be rewarding without harvest. One of the best hunts of my life was spent in the Blues chasing elk. Ten days and no shot fired but a hunt I will always cherish.
