Title: WA General Season Bruiser
Post by: RileyH on November 16, 2020, 01:32:43 PM
First off, a HUGE THANK YOU to Bearpaw and the Mod team for helping me take care of some initial issues -- all is now right in the world and I can finally share!

29-1/2" wide, gross ~190". Interestingly enough, he carries 5" of mass through most H measurements, and his ears were just shy of 27" tip-to-tip. Never seen a deer with a noggin as big as this guys, his head reminded me of a literal Mule!

Maybe next year I'll finally get the book buck I've been chasing...

Heck yea that buck is amazing. A little green lichen on those bases and you'd have bruiser rastafari! Already have the red and yellow and holy smokes the bases are huge.

Congrats! I'd love to see the rest of his measurements. A 190 with no g1's is huge.
I'll see if I can get them from the relative currently in possession and scan them in.

Taxidermist (B&C scorer) said with a matching right side and G1's he'd be all over 200".

SWEET!  I taped the ear tip to tip max on many mule deer and 27" is as big as I've seen.

The funniest was 13" - has lost the outer half of both ears, likely to frostbite.  Shot by a VERY selective hunter I visited with over at least 12 years, he had the grace to laugh at himself - he jumped the buck out of his bed just feet away, saw he was at LEAST 4" past his ears on both sides and took a snap shot - killed  A YOUNG BUCK that was all of 21" outside.

Not sure how there is over 10' of deductions and also not sure how it hits 190 gross with those front and no eye guards  :dunno: Post up the score sheet...

the biggest problem is people are worried about score, I’m in the same boat sometimes.  Fronts like that and no eye-guards, that’s not a 190 gross buck by looking at it in the pics.  But who cares, it’sa big mature bruiser of a buck and you should be happy with it!

Once again man cranker buck!!! Just an FYI though, with the absence of g1's, your h1 and 2 measurements will be the same measurement taken at smallest point between burr and g2. So by your measurements would be 5 3/8 and 5

I and probably most would largely agree with everything you said, BUT, once you open Pandora's box and claim it to score "X" amount you open the door to be questioned on what you claim.  It certainly doesn't change the fact it's an awesome buck and one anyone would be VERY proud of.

In the real world the buck can't get an actual/official score until the drying period has passed? For me it makes no difference what that buck scores, he's a toad and I appreciate it being shared on the forum for everyone to enjoy!

:yeah: its awesome and looks like it scored 190 (regardless of the hw experts) with measurements posted? Score is overrated and rewards balance and perfection over size anyways. I don't even want to know how to score a buck but I know big and that is big  thanks for posting!

Nobody is saying it isn't a huge buck.  He pointed out a boone and Crockett score and posted the measurements that boone and Crockett uses to determine a score. If you're gonna use boone and Crockett formula then it needs to be used correctly. My comment was a simple fyi.

Not everyone is offended by talking score. Ive pm'd with rhiley about this deer and he's far from being squeamish about talking numbers. For the life of me ill never understand why people need to project their own beliefs into others threads. If you don't like the scoring system then that's fine but why is it that every single time there's a "whats it score" thread, all the anti score folks have to come out of the wood work to let everyone know they don't care about score  :dunno:

I am not offended by anybody talking score or about anything else. I read your post and thought it was an fyi. Its all good I just don't personally really care about score but have had people with more knowledge than me score 2 bucks that were our biggest. I shouldn't have even commented about the score just seemed like some were getting carried away with was it actually exactly 190 or not. Its just a great buck and I am glad he posted it.

First you aren't the only person who questioned the score, I wasn't singling you out, second I'm not anti score at all, but it bothers me when people who don't have the rack in their hands call out someone about the score of an animal, (this was meant as a generalized comment, not directled at you alone), especially when photos can make any animal look smaller or larger depending how they were taken. I'm glad to hear the OP doesn't mind talking numbers, and that you were only questioning his formula, but I still hope other members don't get the feeling they might be called out by numerous other members if they post their photos! This has been a concern for some time and one reason some members actually don't post their photos.

You hit the nail on the head Dale. The less people get up on their soapbox and feel like they need to call everybody out on anything they may or may not agree with, the more pictures we will see. I enjoy seeing people successes and could really care less what the actual score is and whether I agree with what they say it is or not. I humor people all the time that I may or may not agree with because I don’t like unnecessary confrontations, but some like drama I guess. Let just leave that out of the forum and in daytime soap operas where it belongs

LOL that's because it was not me holding him in that picture and I respect folks wishes to remain anonymous!

I appreciate everyones comments, question(s/ing), etc. and take no offense to anything. I too would be skeptical in this era of wide-angled instagram buck pics, and I'd love to put the buck in all of your guys hands to see for yourselves if I could! Bearpaw is absolutely right though, these days where it's easy to track people down and harass them definitely came into effect and dissuaded me from posting at first.

If it was totaled wrong I'd love to hear what more seasoned guys (like Karl) have to say about it. We had a great conversation a couple days ago and he knows how catastrophically awful this hunt was until this deer finally hit the ground. It doesn't bother me at all if people question it and it needs to be scored and scored again. As a passionate (addicted) young hunter, I'd love to know if I was off base so I can ultimately get better at field judging and learn more about deer.

Fortunately dead ones are a lot easier to score than live ones!

It's still a oil buck from my perspective.  Glad the op is light hearted about score conversations. It has turned people away in the past and people aren't posting this year because of it.

Scoring live is a little tricky.

It not only takes skill to get close enough, but to hold on with one hand  while trying to pull measurements with the other is  way tough.  I've been kicked off a number of times.
