How many people actually noticed that the wdfw increased the bag limit on grouse from 3 to 4 birds?
-
I noticed it and approve!

Must be a misprint..

It is real.
I overheard a F&W head tell a comission member that it would not hurt the population.

Cant wait till I can shoot some. One almost gave me a heart attack today. I was in some really heavy brush. I couldnt see more than 20 yards throught the branches. A male started doing that wing thumping thing they do. Scared the crap out of me. Sounded like something was running at me. :yike: I did discover that I can draw that 6.5" barrel pretty fast before I figured out what it was.

You pulled a pistol over a grouse? :yike: Relax, you have a better chance of being in a plane crash than getting mauled by a black bear with cubs. :chuckle:

Laugh it up. :chuckle: Im sure you never got jumped by a ferocious man eating grouse before either. Little *censored*s alway wait till you almost step on them. Turn yourself inside out when they take off. Im getting kind of use to them jumping up out of nowhere but not use to that wing thumping, at least not so close.
-
That "wing thumping" thing is called drumming. In case you were wondering...
-
Just think Kain, this fall we will all be jelouse of your fast draw. I always look in the direction I hear the sound to see what made the noise, 50% of the time I just watch them fly away without getting a shot off. :bash:
-
I noticed that bag limit thing too when I printed off the reg. Kind of wierd that they did it this year though, after the horrible bird year we had in '08. Crappy spring affected everything from grouse to quail to pheasants to huns here in the blues.

I rarely get a shot in the stuff I hunt. Its thick, especially in the fall. Might get one of the Taurus pistol that shoots 410 shells, that might be fast enough.
Thanks bobcat, I knew it was called something was just drawing a blank. Im not normally out in the woods this time of year and dont hear them do it.

We used to have pheasants in our field. Tall brush looking for the baseball. Those things would not flush till you were almost stepping on them, I did step on a few.
I am glad they bumped the limit. Not a whole lot of people who go small game hunting anymore. It was a waste of a day to go after only three.
-
over here they could raise the limit on turkeys from two to six and not hurt the population !
-
Whoo Hoo!!!

:yeah:
Sounds good to me. The last few weekend trips into the woods I saw about 17 grouse. It seems like they had a good winter.

my Buddie snapped this shot out shed hunting.

thats a great pic :hello:

sounds good four grouse Im happy!!1
-
Awesome! I didn't realize that. I'm not exactly a grouse hunter, but if I need to get out in the woods and I don't have any other tags I'll bring a shotgun incase I see some.
-
glad they went to 4
-
:EAT: :EAT: :EAT: :EAT:

well limit of 4 and hope they went to 12 in possession instead of 9.
-
The funny part is that it was given as "opportunity". F&W admits that they don't even have a population estimate and they know that this could be detrimental to localized populations.
Only one commission member questioned the reasoning.

Yes, they did. I am actually surprised that they though about it. :chuckle:

How lucky you are, Kain - you found a grouse's drumming site! I've spent quite a few hour afield lately trying to locate drumming logs or rocks. Found a few, and got some nice pics, but I'd love to find some more sites before they stop drumming for the year. A site has to be just right for me to get the quality of photos that I'm looking for, so the more drumming logs I find, the better the chances are that one will be set up just right for good photo possibilities. Perhaps you found a perfect site!
-
I know on average ruff grouse will drum every four minutes give or take 30 sec. I use to run grouse transects for the Feds and that was how we estimated populations. We would basically listen for 4-5 minutes and count how many grouse drummed within that period of time. I have found lots of drumming sites in Washington. cool pics...I have had ruff grouse hens act like they were hurt (broke wing) to divert my attention from her clutch of chicks...pretty cool.
-
I got one this morning driving from Cheney to Curlew around the Loon Lake area, at 65 mph they look like a down pillow exploding. :chuckle:
-
I am new to grouse hunting and am thinking about going out to darrington next season what do you guys think? Ive been told to hunt the areas where there are aspen trees growing in old clear cuts. I will be hunting with a gsp.
-
I found a bunch of ruffed grouse drumming sites turkey hunting last year. I got a secret area :chuckle:
-
I like to hunt blues, but have not found a good area in Washington yet. I grew up hunting them in Montana in a more open forest and sage mix. I could wait for and try the shots on the wing. Here, in Washington, the grouse are mostly educated to fly early and out of shotgun range and there is more brush to get in the way. I can see why most people here shoot them on the ground. Just isn't fun for me.

and thats the reason i hunt them with a bolt action 22.

hit certin wilderness areas and you'll run into a hundred or so a day, but you gotta hike :dunno:

I love hunting blue grouse, and mostly, they don't just sit and wait to be shot. Course my experience has mostly been hunting them with dogs. There are lots of open areas you can find to hunt them in where you can shoot them on the fly. Just get on a ridgetop that has lots of berries. I've also found lots of blues feeding on old roads eating dandelions. I've seen their crops just crammed full of nothing but dandelions. So look for those dandelions and chances are there's going to be blue grouse around.
-
Haven't been seeing to many in So.Central WA the past couple of years. But I like the idea of four a day.
-
Go out on the FS roads after a good rain. They all run to the road to sun and dry after the rain and they're just thick.
-
Know about the rain thing. There is unfortunantly alot of year round and other illegal hunting in the 500 units.
-
I noticed! I think its great! Grouse are the best tasting game bird out there in my opinion.
-
is there a such thing as an educated grouse :chuckle:
You bet there is. I've had grouse flush at more than 100 yards. Whenever I hunt them later in the year they are pretty spooky.

:yeah:
Agreed. When I was a kid up here in the NE we used to shoot a limit almost every time we went for firewood after the 1st of September. Down here in the blues you have to actively hunt them. You see them on the roads here, but by the time you get out of the pickup and loaded, they're gone. I think it has to do with the amount of predators in a given area. We used to control predators better when I was a kid (70's and 80's- when you could still hunt bear and cougar with bait and dogs). I think the more predators there are, the spookier they get.
During elk season I always carry a grouse arrow. I see a few birds, but usually get only one or two shots a year. They just don't stick around.

We hunted up high in the Pasayten for 3 days last September, and we only came across 3 Blue Grouse. One grouse per day. That's one grouse per every 8 or 10 miles covered. A hundred a day would have been an unbelievable windfall! I'll be very happy to "settle" for a half dozen flushes a day, once the season gets underway. I just won't be going back to the Pasayten to hunt them.

Grouse are cyclic, just like rabbits.
-
For Dave or anyone else in the know....;
How have the eastern hatches fared this spring? They get wet or not?
-
I hope we have another good grouse year! I havent seen 100 but did see 33 in one day last year! Hope its about the same this year!!!
-
Saw six or seven blue grouse yesterday on the coast. One group of five were feeding on salmon berries.
-
Ive seen several this year, and last year was good..
-
I have killed a fair number of blue and ruffed grouse over the years, and I have seen some mammoth-sized blues that could literally feed two people with just the breast meat and legs. I used to see grouse all the time up the Snoqualmie Middle Fork, but not anymore. (Maybe the greenies ran them out? :chuckle:)
But I love grouse hunting. Blues get me up high and I find them in places where other people don't even look.
-

Just noticed ;)
Haven't seen very many the last couple years.
-
probably just like raising the limit to 6 steelhead on the cowlitz river the last 2 years -- nobody's gonna catch that many, so it doesn't hurt :dunno:
-
Its gonna be a good year for them this year!!! I think its great!! Last year was good and I have been seeing family's of grouse everytime I have been out! Cant wait!!

Ive only seen one grouse so far, just driving fire roads around darrington, Im just looking for deer hunting spots
-
Saw a mixed bag of Blues and Ruffed last sunday. We saw 6 hen Blues all with youngsters.
-
Played Gold Mountain golf course last weekend and saw 4 adult grouse, 2 were sitting in a tree just off the path (nice sized ruffs) and 2 were hens with chicks. 9 chicks total between the two. Looks to be a good year in that area. Funny thing was, I was hearing gun shots the whole time I was out there.

I saw eleven ruffed grouse this last weekend while bear hunting.I can't wait until september
-
Wow, eleven ruffed! :o Good job. Very encouraging.
-
grouse it does a body good  cant wait cool temps are coming soon..
-
Montana Blue. My son spotted him while we were scouting for mule deer.
-
I love the grouse sightings!! Itching for September 1st... :P
-
Also a montana grouse!!!!
-
And the 4 little ones by her side!!!
-
Guess I am going to have to disagree on this one. I think 3 a day is fine. I definately havn't noticed an increase in the overall population of the birds in north central Wa. to justify upping the bag limit to 4 birds per day. However, a lot of folks probably don't get out as much as others and by increasing their harvest potential it should make for more opportunity for them. :twocents:
