Title: Coyote small game hunting Cle Elum area
Post by: Learo2000GT on December 28, 2020, 09:51:11 AM
Good Afternoon-

I am heading to Cle Elum this week and my son just passed his hunters education and would Ike to get out and do some small game hunting.  Anyone have experience hiring rabbits, squirrels or grouse in the area? Also, I was going to try my hand at coyote hunting dor the first time and was going to pick up an electronic call from cabelas and some decoys and try some coyote hunting

I have a built rubicon rubicon for off roading but a lot of the roads could be closed due to snowpack and vehicular limitations on roads for winter recreation.

Anyway , I grew up in Michigan and found rabbit and squirrel hunting as a food way to develop hunting skills.  Any recommendations for the area, and I can drive more towards eastern Washington.  Any areas or type of habit to try small game or coyote hunting in the area.   Any tips or areas greatly appreciated.   Doug.

I'd suggest getting further east, out of the thicker timber, to get to a more target rich environment for varmints. CleElm is still in the mountain feline type country, coyotes there, but harder to get. I've done well in the Desert Unit in the past on Coyotes, but it's getting heavily hunted. I'd still choose it over the NF though. Sagebrush is better than Timber for dogs!

Grouse in the timber, but like you said, snow makes access on wheels much tougher.

Bunnies in either place.

I had done some good grouse hunting up the Teanaway a few years ago, way up off middlefork teanaway road by the campground.  I heard predators had lowered the turkey numbers more recently so I'd say go up there and help fix the problem.  Keep an eye on the weather though.  I heard the pass was supposed to get some significant snow this week Thursday-Friday above 2,500ft.

Sounds like a plan.  I love that area anyways.  Got to figure out what roads are closed for winter recreation and what is opened to wheeled vehicles.  I have a built 4 door rubicon snd ibviousot don’t want to ruin groomed trails so  will heck with the ranger station. Thanks so much

So is rhat rod open to vehicles so u know or is it closed foe winter recreation. I have a lifted rubicon with 35s and winch and all the goodies so can air down and get through some snow but can’t tell if closed doe snowmobiles and skiers.  I was i out there moral hunting this area and stopped at camp ground and went high in old burn area.  Is that the area u are talking about. You taking 970 to tenaway road.  Looks open to wheeled vehicles I see a campground 17 ans a road out if there called upper olso road and lower weighl road is open to wheeled vehicles elevation is 2200-2440 is open.  Contour lines are close so it looks
Kind of steep . Is this the area you are taking about.
