Title: Winter gloves for predator hunting
Post by: Tracker0721 on January 01, 2021, 08:42:49 AM: What has anyone found to keep their fingers warm? We usually get to -20 and this year we haven’t been below 8 yet and just this 20 degree weather is killing my hands with my gloves I just bought. I tried chilly grips, some other ones from the store here, I got these latest ones from sportsman’s warehouse and they said they were warmest. I’m considering just buying a pair of first lite grizzly mitts but they look a little bulky for operating my call. And they’re pretty dang expensive. Any suggestions?

Post by: birdshooter1189 on January 01, 2021, 08:46:34 AM: I used a pair of deer-skin gloves (work style gloves) when I was coyote hunting near moses lake earlier this week. My hands stayed warm. It was 30-40 degrees there. I"m not sure how these gloves hold up to the much colder temps.

Bingo. But for extra warmth when it’s really cold I buy them a size too big, and underneath I wear those basic white cotton gloves (similar to a roping glove). You can buy a 20 pack of the cotton gloves for about 8$

If it's that cold I use a toe warmer in the mitt part.

I just picked up two sets of German surplus leather palm mittens and two sets of Dutch surplus wool trigger finger liners for about $30 from Sportsman's Guide.

The Dutch wool liners are nice in that tthey have a slit that you just poke your finger out for trigger use.

They are, yet they’re the warmest thing I’ve ever had on my hands, bar none. My fingers were warm at -14

Post by: Rob on January 07, 2021, 02:12:54 PM: Not sure how these would work with calls, but I find the "sleestak style" three finger mitts to be GREAT. This one has a trigger finger hatch so you can keep the glove on and pop just your trigger finger out for shooting if desired.

They have a down version that I am ashamed to say I also picked up (I am a huge fan of mittens in general) I like them better as they are lighter, however they do not have the trigger finger hatch!

When I am a bit more active, I go with a light weight liner glove like this (I actually use the Mt Hardwear butter glove but I see they no longer make them!)

I then covered them with a shell glove (or shell mitt - again Mt. Hardwear no longer makes the shell mitt I like) like this:

So when I need to shoot or do something that requires more dexterity, I shed the mitt and use the liner glove only. Some combo of liner glove and shell is what I use 99% of the time when I am active/semi-active. The Sleestak mitts come out if I plan to sit!

I just put a hothand in my pocket and warm it up when it gets cold.
