Went 6 for 6 tonight on marten !!
-
Nice
-
very impressive, takes a lot of work and time.
-
Excellent work! I can't get a single :chuckle:
-
That's awesome!
-
Good run right there!
-
2 is the best I've ever done! Well done!
-
Great job congrats
-
I didn’t know there was that many Marten in Washington!
Wow
-
The Washington Cascades have a relatively dense population of marten. You just never see them out and about during the day. Get to the right elevation and timber type and you will find them.
-
Wow
-
That is a great night!
-
I’d say you have them figured out

Impressive congrats hard work paid off

Well done!
-
Sweet how's the fur looking this year?
-
I figured you were up on a line. Nice Haul
-
That’s a great check!! Did you catch any in koros?
-
Very nice!
-
Fur is perfect ! A couple small ones were a little wet but the other 4 are perfect ! All caught with the little trap
Turner89 helped put the sets in an I think is hooked on the Marten trapping game but it’s a lot of work and time involved
-
Good run! Looks like a fun day.
That will be a fond memory to look back on the next time you get skunked!
-
 Nice!
-
Thats soo awesome. Nice work.
-
Thats awesome right there. Do you wedge the trap in the box so it dosent move?
-
Yes a pressure wedge
-
New and improved boxes done and done
-
very nice, what kind of bait set up do you use?
-
Beaver only
-
 thank you
-
should the beaver meat be kept as fresh as possible for bobcat or let it go bad?
-
Marten I use fresh thawed bait
I’ve caught plenty of cats on the nastiest dripping bait possible
-
ok thank you,i finally got my first beaver so now i have bait.
what do you think?freeze half and let nature take its course on the other half.
-
I take the castor and dry it
Gut the beaver then I quarter it and cut the head off for cat bait
Then I cut all the belly meat out and half the size of your fist just put in sandwich bags and freeze
The day before you set or check traps pull a bag out for your resets or new sets
Don’t through any away
-
ok thanks again
-
nice work!
-
Jake, I used to take a tin of sardines and use it at my cat sets in MT. Open the tin of sardines by pulling back the tab but not all the way, leaving lid attached, drip the juice around the entrance to the cubby (in the modern day WA trapping, obviously a box trap). Throw the oily sardines inside the set and then hang the empty tin by a piece of trapping wire, as high as you can get it on a branch. The tin will turn and “flash” in the wind. Bobcats are super curious and are attracted to the tin and cone check out where your set is at. Have you tried this before? RJ
-
Yep !! I’ve tried pretty much everything at least twice but my 2 favorite cat baits are beaver or duck and if I’m only putting beaver in the cage I’m still throwing feathers all around !
My eye appeal is a duck wing hung with mono fishing line and a little lure on it
-
how do you bait with duck?whole, chunks burger?
-

 Ya, used to use beaver a lot in our sets. The wing on mono and scattered feathers is a great tactic.
-
Breast them out for me !! For cats I cut the wings off ( to be hung for eye appeal with lure ) hang the whole duck in the back and rip a lot of feathers out and spread outside and some inside the cage
Cats are thieves they’ll steal a free meal every chance
-
One cat
-
That's a nice bobby Jake
-
Was he a westside or eastside cat?
-
Judging by the moss on the trees I'm going with the wetter of the 2 climates.
-
Great cat congrats
-
Decent day
-
I must be in all the wrong spots if this is normal for you :chuckle:
-
Couple more tonight!
-
on a roll! that is awesome!
-
With the density of martin your in, I'd be looking into a double sided box with a center bait cage see if you can swing a double or 2

making one this weekend
-
You are dialed in..no surprise
-
Smile
-
Thats awesome
-
Wow nice job 👍

Anyone had marten cannibalize each other? I had a good size marten eaten today. Weather has been warm so can’t rule out cat’s and no snow for tracks.I have pretty high concentrations of marten in the area I trap them but this is a first for me.
-
I’ve had it happen before and by weasels a cat would take the whole thing for the most part
My :twocents:
That sucks !
-
It took everything not in the box! I almost didn’t know it was there but opened the box to check the trap/bait. Weasel and birds usually leave them more skeletonized in my experience but last year was the first time I set for marten. As good as marten are at cleaning up a carcass I figure it was eaten by a marten. I think that without good snow cover they are having a harder time than usual staying warm and getting the voles they would normally be eating.
-
This is also not too far away from the north cascade fisher release area to completely discount the possibility of being eaten by a fisher (I have seen fisher in the area even before the release).
-
Did you uncover that cat trap or was it out in the open like that.
-
Uncovered from getting the cat out , all cat cages are brushed in really good
-
Bullytrout put a trail cam up at that box and see what happens and yes Fisher will eat them no problem
After having a couple chewed by rodents I’ve been setting them so when they pull the trap out they swing out and hang in the air , I don’t think that would help with a Fisher but I think it would solve another marten or weasel and rodents from doing damage! Any pics of your sets ?
-
Set up a new line this weekend with Ron
-
I just screw them to a tree like pictured. Now I have the traps chained above the box but with the striker bar trap retention setup I am trying out only 50% of the time is the trap dislodged and the animal hanging freely.
-
It’s a small world. I don’t think I have ever met Ron but I see his truck while out trapping and we get duck carcasses from the same guy.
-

Thanks. Was just curious. Whats the dimensions on the cat trap? I have my trappers license and never tried to cage cats

12”W-18”T-38”L
I’ve used a bunch of different size variations and these work great for all cats of any size with conibear triggers
-
thank you
is there a brand or two you like best?

-

-
Having a great season!!!
-
2 more Marten tonight the first one was a old guy worn out teeth and some white on his chest and the 2nd was just a good mature male
-
Some pretty animals there
-
Front teeth a little worn
-
Was he chewing on the cage?
-
#16 and #17 had Ron with me and finally something caught with him along
-
Awesome!
-
This Tom in the cage was getting smacked around by a bigger Tom when I walked up to the cage and the cage was about 15 feet from where I had it set
-
Looks like a pretty cat! You think the other will come back? Or be trap shy now?
-
Fingers crossed he’ll be back!
-
Nice big cat, JakeLand. Odds are the other one is bigger.
I had a big tom killed and partially eaten in a suitcase trap. Both real nice Lynxcats. I don't remember what I got for the eater. The other cat had one front shoulder and half its face eaten. All that the other cat could get to through the wire. I salvaged that pelt, had it tanned, and made into a headband for my daughter. Came out real nice.
-
#18
-
Dang Dude! Congrats! Awesome!
-
#19 with a goal of 24 !! It was a job to do get traps checked with snowshoes on and still sinking to the hips in powder
-
Thats awesome. Hoping to target some at the end of the month
-
Another cat and #20 on the marten
