Title: New property
Post by: turkeyfeather on January 14, 2021, 06:31:08 AM
My wife and I just closed on our piece of paradise this last Monday. 20 acres at the base of Deer lake Mt. in Loon Lake. Had a forester up there yesterday walking the property and preparing out timber management plan so we can keep the forest land designation on the property. He called yesterday afternoon and one of the first things he asked was if we had a big dog. Told him no and besides we hadn't been up there in a couple of weeks. He then says....."I think you have a couple wolves then". He then tells me that he came across fresh cougar tracks as well. We expected the possibility of bears and cats but wasn't sure beings it's not to far from town. But we have hunted around Loon Lake and know people that live in the area. They have never said anything about wolves before. Anyone else heard of them in this area?

Yes that area is infested with them.  I think they're planting them other places, too.

I would imagine most wolf sightings go unreported.  I see 1 or 2 every year in Central WA.

Last time I was up Buck Creek there were signs posted saying there was live traps out in the area, this was last summer. I have seen wolves in the past in the area as well.

We are north west of you and we have had 4 on trail cams the last two winters.   Haven’t checked the cams yet this year but I’m sure we will have pics of a couple.

I lived at the base of deer lake mountain growing up as a kid.
I  hunted that area for 20 + years .
Things sure have changed since 35 years ago.If you think the hunting is good now hahahaha..... You should of hunted years ago .Its been about 15 years since I was in buck crk.
All I will say is been around those mountains awhile. The base of deer lk mountain is a pretty wide area.

Great bear and turkey hunting.   I’m sure there are still deer around too.....just not like 35 years ago.  That could be said for all of Washington though.

Def good turkey hunting in the area. Can I turkey hunt with you? I have seen deer and coyote in the general area. Enjoy your new property!

Get a dog with a good nose & she'll tell you what's going on.  Our lab can smell a cat, bear, or wolf a mile a way.  Keep a shotgun handy.  It's not that big a deal.  They could be just passing through.  Wolves usually clean out a place and move on.  If you feed deer near your house, you'll have a greater chance of seeing these predators.   :twocents:

I always take wolf sighting with a grain of salt ,If it was me ,I would put a trail cam out and see what you get .Thats about the only way to positive tell what roaming your property.
Congrats on the new land.Happy Hunting.Good Luck.

Congrats on your new property.  Put the cameras out.  I'd bet you'll be surprised on the variety of game you get.

Hope to see some pics and the large canids run huge areas, likely you will not see them even when in your area.

Hauled logs out of buck creek for a few weeks in December. No shortage of wolf tracks every time we got fresh snow.

Every time I was up in the NE corner hunting White tail, wolves were there.  Canada is only a border, wildlife don't care!  Who knows what the state game department planted!! :bash:
