Title: .650 BC 25 Cal Target & .613 BC 25 Cal Hunting Bullet from Berger
Post by: b23 on January 20, 2021, 11:57:42 AM
I'm sure many of you have already seen this but for those quarter bore fans that maybe haven't Berger has a new 135gr 25 Caliber very high BC bullet coming out.  Unfortunately it's a pointed target bullet so it probably won't be very good as a hunting bullet but if they can come up with something similar in their hunting line at a later date I could see a .625 - .650 BC  135-ish quarter bore hunting bullet being very popular with the 25-06, 257Wby, 25 Creed, 25-284 crowd.

Does this mean there will be a lot of new quarter bore 8tw barrels being ordered and spun on.....

It's nice to see some viable alternatives to the 131 BJ though. I've already had the itch to build a short tube (18ish?) quarter bore with a suppressor for the Ace, but lack of backup bullets was an issue. This just solidifies the fact that I want one  :chuckle: good to see .257 and .277 getting with the times, lots of fun to be had these days as a shooter

Most .257 caliber barrels do not have a fast enough twist to stabilize bullets longer than a typical 120g.

And I think this is why you often don't see new heavier high BC bullets in certain calibers like the 25 cal because none of the factor guns that are chambered in anything .257 come with barrels that have enough twist to shoot these kinds of bullets.  Like em love em or hate em, I have to applaud the effort of Berger for taking the time to make a bullet that I don't think any factory gun will stabilize and someone will have to actually rebarrel something first before they can shoot these.  It's not like the 25 cal has a huge following in fact I think it probably gets the least love of just about all the different calibers so it's nice to see Berger add new high BC heavy for the quarter bore folks.  I've never really been that big of a .257 fan but one of these in a 25-284 would be like a laser beam and without shooting a ton of powder.

A 25 PRC should launch that bullet at a comfy velocity.

Says 7.5 minimum, so Id think 7 would be better, I hate being up against the minimum.  Not many factory 25 cals going to have that.

Both the new Bergers recommend min of 8tw for both their new bullets and generally they base their recommendation on the slower cartridges their bullets will be shot in and at low elevations.  A quick call to Berger before you order a barrel would be best though.

The Blackjack 131gr “Ace” crushes Mule deer. It has a pointy tip.🙃
