Nice fish Jingles, still gonna get your way and look you up my friend.
Back in the day(pre 90,s) before Sullivans pond dried up, we used to pull fish out of Sullivans at an amazing rate, limit in 15-20 minutes. The fish were all about that length give or take and were shaped like footballs, just fat as could be, problem was the meat was the color of a chocolate Lab :chuckle:, just brown and muddy as could be, wed use barbless hooks and release them but a blast to catch em on lite gear ....Once again dandy fish you got there
-
Looks like it bumped into a damn.
Nice fish though...
-
Nice catch.
I loved laying on the ice on a sunny day and feeling/hearing the ice shift. Good times.

Kidding of course Jingles :chuckle: Nice catch!

Nice fish, looks like it’ll taste excellent too! I’m headed out today for ice fishing on Cascade lake in Idaho. They been nailing the perch pretty good I’ve heard. First time ice fishing, can’t wait

Hey Jingles, great looking meat on that fish! Just curious - Okanogan County Lake?

Yes one of the local Lakes hope you can understand not getting real specific as to which one had the whole lake to myself yesterday instead of needing a reservation to drill a hole like needed on a couple of them

No not snagged but nightcrawlers doing their thing on a size 4 hook

Just got here to our destination in New Meadows. Long azz drive, got pulled over by the PO PO for doing 39 in a 25. Super nice sherif and let us off. I’ll let you know how we do. I think we’ll hit it Monday.

It’s 1 degree oh boy! Can’t wait for the snowmobile ride out to the fishing’ spot!

Nice fish! I just got into this ice fishing thing and its so fun! Fist time out this year I hit Cascade Lake for some jumbo perch and then I got into a good trout in Helena a few weeks back.

Nice fish

Looks like the type of pic Skip Knowles used to put in Fishing and Hunting news. Never forget the time he had his chick in a bikini holding some big fish. I doubt there are any chicks in bikinis ice fishing.

Welcome to the world of Hardwater fishing but be careful you'll get hooked(pun intended)
Next will be a flasher, an ice shelter and an adapter for your auger that fits your portable drill.
Nice fish and hope you get some of those Jumbo's
-
That's a nice trout! I've caught salmon smaller than that...

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Already have the flasher- Got the ice kit for my Garmin EchoMap
Got the hand auger and made a adapter to convert it to power from my drill. $10 worth of all thread and an old frisbee golf disc and it's cherry!
Also, i have 3 Jaw Jackers and just finished up making two DIY jigging bases for them. So, I am pretty well vested at this point LOL.

That is awesome! I am heading back there on the 16th-20th of next month.
We did pretty good considering we had no idea what we were doing. We got several perch over 2lbs and had a blast. I lost a huge trout at the hole as well. What I learned was that you need to move a lot until you find fish. You will want some type of 4 wheeler or sled for sure. The wind at the launch is not a good indication of what it is out on the ice. Learned that the hard way. the guys at Tackle Toms are really nice and i found them to be helpful and seemingly honest.

Good luck at the Hardwater Classic hope you win lots
Just out of curiosity how thick was the ice?

When I was there it was 12-14''. Heard its 16-20'' now.

Went out yesterday. We had a blast, I could do that all day everyday. The ice was a good 2 feet and cold, cold, cold. It's weird that a person can fish a hole 8 feet away from someone and get very different results. Worms did better than the maggots for us. Got a few perch fatties and one 4 pound steelhead, that was interesting on a tiny ice pole.

Headed out for round 2 :fishin:

Getting me all excited for next weekend Southpole :chuckle:
-
My buddy is fishing Roosevelt right now and says it was windy and snowy earlier by the dam
-
One of my trophies today. It was blizzard conditions out there. The wind was fierce. I'm certain my cousin and I were the only dummies out there, we loved it. It reminded us we were still alive. Good day.

So what are your daily averages? I have heard of people putting buckets of perch on the ice but that was not my experience there nor was it any of the other folks I talked to. It was less about the quantity of fish and more about the quality of BIG fish. How often are you moving?

As I am a Cascade newbie heading down next weekend, id love and appreciate some insight as well into your method of madness Southpole. You seem to have it pretty dialed in.

I'm just a guest ice fisherman visiting my family so I'm far from an expert of the in's and outs of ice fishing on cascade. The first day we went out one set of holes were super slow but another set of holes only 10-12 feet away that my aunt and uncle were fishing was hot the whole time we were out there. So we move from the slow holes about 14 feet further out and we were catching perch constantly plus one really nice steelhead. I was told that it was not uncommon to get multiple jumbo perch out there. We got 6 jumbo perch yesterday between 2 of us in about 6 hours time. We moved twice yesterday as well, that time it didn't help with the quantity issue but thats when we started getting the bigger ones. We might have moved again but it was so gnarly outside we just did what we could with the second set up. I was told there's lots of guys that get real technical with fish finders and tackle movement. That's probably how some guys get the big ones constantly. I like the old fashioned hope and pray fishing myself.

Appreciate the info! Got me excited.......minus the 8hr drive :chuckle:

After you get some time on the Hardwater fishing perch you'll find they school and usually school in about the same size and yes you can do a lot of hole hopping to keep on top of them and the action can be fast and furious when you get into them.
It super satisfying when you locate a school of the jumbos and can keep them biting.
-
So, without revealing too much on specific location we went out of Donnelly area about 100 yards off shore. Drop down your gear (teeny tiny light green tungsten jig with a super tiny hook, until you hit bottom and then come up a couple inches to a foot up. One thing that made an unusual difference before I knew better was not balling up the worm on the hook. I did a mini wacky rig with about 1 1/2 - 2” long worm or somewhat balled up with a 1” hangy down tail. For some reason those perch like straight dangly piece of worm. Some guys do a subtle soft light jig. What really nails it is when you put the pole down to do something else is where you will usually get a bite... true story. That’s all I have on what I learned of the cascade ice fishing 101. Good luck to you guys headed that way.

Yeah, the schools hit from 5-10 minute increments it seemed. You’d start nailing them then hurry to get your gear back down before you missed the rest of the school. When we were getting the bigger ones it was longer waiting times but constantly big.

Thanks for the info :hello:

My cousin Brian has them dialed in pretty well. You guys might enjoy his videos. Good luck Blanchard! And everyone else of course!

Great video!

Yeah he lives to fish. Check out his YouTube channel and you can see he fishes everywhere. He's even got quite a few sponsor's.

Awesome! HAHAHAH I watched all his videos before I got into ice fishing.
-
I watched the first video but not the other one. Did they ever reveal how they used their fish finding equipment and how to manipulate their gear? Someone told me the guys that have this special fish finding equipment fish just looking at the screen and had a specific type of jigging movement once they see that’s there is a big school in. I’m certain that’s how those guy’s consistently get the bigger fish.
-
This was the first fish I pulled out of the ice at Cascade. Cant wait to get back over there.
As for the electronics, I really found it to be great. It helped me find the bottom and see exactly where my jig was in relation to the fish. It really made things nice IMHO.
-
That’s what a friend of my cousin’s was told, once you get the electronics you’ll never go back. If I lived in a place that I could utilize the investment I might do that too. The old fashioned way of luckin’ out wasn’t bad either, it was like playing the slot machines, one of those pulls you’re eventually going to get a decent payout. Towards the end of my last day there, I was starting to slowly place my gear on the bottom then super duper slowly lift the tip of my pole up until the line straightened out. Came up about 4-6” off the bottom, then repeated the process after 30 seconds to a minute. About every other time I’d get some kind of nibble, that’s when I started nailing the jumbos more often. All in all, I absolutely can not wait to go back and do that again. I can’t wait to hear from Blanchard’s trip so we can live vicariously through his fishing trip :chuckle: .
-
Yeah Blanchard don't forget to post up how your trip went! I have a baby coming in a week or two and haven't been out to do anything but work all winter! Lol
-
I'll definitely report back. At my current pace, these will be $100 perch unless we get a bunch :chuckle:
-
Can’t put a price on a good time 8)

I'll bet my wife can :chuckle:

Yeah with the time I took off for elk season it basically cost me $5000. I might as well buy a tag in a state that's easier to hunt and spend only a week and tag out... :dunno:

I was really lazy and didn't' want to make some huge production YouTube video but, I wanted to share this. Here is my DIY Jigging Jaw Jacker Base.

Yesterday was a rodeo. Snowmobile caught on fire right out of the gate. Got it out before all was lost but then we had to get it back to the truck and then shuttle all our gear with one machine and a single sled. Late start but pulled a jumbo on my second fish. Wind was pretty unpleasant and the cold flat nuked our drill batteries so we had to really throttle back our exploration. All in all it was a fun first trip. Im excited to get back there with what we have learned. Total we put about 50 perch on the ice, with 4 being jumbos. I lost two trout at the hole that were absolute slabs which was absolutely heart breaking.

Dang that sounds like a crazy day. Supercool you go onto fish though. I'll be hitting you up for a report soon.
-
Cool, thanks for sharing. That sucks about the sled, I hate when something like that gets in the way of valuable fishing time. When my cousin was reeling up his steelhead I rammed my arm in the hole to grab it like an old brown bear so we wouldn’t loose it. I can see where a guy can loose bigger fish at the hole if you or someone else didn’t get down in there to grab it. Sounds like you had fun regardless.
-
We got some crazy good intel from some guys on how to specifically target the jumbos. Next trip ill have a gas auger and a non combustible snowmobile :chuckle:
I'm also getting the ice transducer for my garmin. Flasher is key for targeting those jumbos. My redneck ammo can cost me that really big trout on Saturday and was kind of a pain for quick setup running and gunning.
-
You should be able to suspend the transducer in the hole with the use of some pool noodles and a little bit of foam rope and a couple of tye wraps.
It allows you to adjust the depth of your transducer to get just below the ice and is easy to pull up when fighting a fish.

thats also an ice transducer. I was using the boat transducer that came with it. According to the internet they are pretty finicky without being affixed hence the pvc. Ill definitely be adding the ice bundle to my garmin before the next trip.
-
Yes it is.  But shows idea of the pool noodles. Not sure how it floatin in the hole would differ from bobbin around in a boat 🤔
People also build a tripod with an arm over the hole to suspend the transducer.

no idea but it definitely makes a difference. Jonathan_S had the same exact unit as me but had his transducer just dangling free and mine was far more consistent having the transducer affixed with the pvc :dunno:

Hate to see a dangling transducer takes away the whole fishing experience!! :chuckle:

Same with the one I have pictured. I had it right up to the top of the hole, the hook come loose about nailed my cousin in the eye. I looked down and the fish was just floating there not realizing yet that it was free to go. I dove on it and hand scooped it out with half my arm in the water. Well worth it!

You guys may already know this, but there is a really good Facebook page dedicated to ice fishing Cascade.

As an old ice fisherman once said, they do not have reverse
-
Yeah a fishes instinct is to just go straight forward if it's panicked so if you got it in the tube of ice where you drilled your hole it's just going to come right out the top!

Well, I am back from Cascade. I caught a ton of fish and had a blast. Sadly, I was not able to break the 2lb club this time. My biggest was 1.94lbs. I caught several that were over 1.5 lbs and overall I have nothing to complain about. It was a great trip and I can't wait to go back next year.
Things that I learned from my two trips there this year.
1) In early January there was no slush to speak of and it was not even a concern. A little more than a month later and boy what a difference. The slush was so bad that the snowmobiles got stuck several times and it made certain areas of the lake unfishable.
2) My DIY jigging machine worked really well and it actually caught more fish than the name brad one. Also, it caught 2 fish over 2 lbs (Not the ones pictured) but I was too far to get to it so one of the other guys got it both times.
3) That lake will keep you on your toes. We kicked absolute butt the first day and the following 3 days were a struggle. Lots of moving and drilling. We made it happen but it was hard work for sure. I probably used 20 different types of jigs/lures and strangely I would catch a few fish on them and then it would die and I would have to change. New jig, couple more fish and then it would die again. So, lots of moving and tying but we stayed on the fish.
-
Nice! I’m sure the ice is probably going to be sketchy from here on out I would imagine. We actually had good dry ice our first day then 2 days later it was super slush during a blizzard, night and day difference.

Yeah, that slush is no fun at all. It was almost a foot deep in some spots and that was under a foot of snow
