Title: P & Y Whitetails
Post by: OutHouse on January 22, 2021, 11:50:04 AM
Who here has a P & Y whitetail they can show me? It's my goal to get one someday. Please tell me the score of it if you know or can approximate. Also, any other record book eligible bucks of any kind are welcome, Thanks!

Not being a dick here at all, but Id get the book for the pictures and the scores so you can see the most common attributes of a deer that makes minimum.  You will se that a lot of them share similar mass and main beam length and you will get to where you can discount an animal based on a quick observation, at least to the point of "likely to make it" and "unlikely to make it".

The book will allow you to compare pics to scores easily and handily at your convenience.   :twocents:

Crappy picture but here’s one I killed that would be about what it takes to get you close

No that's great advice I hadn't even thought to buy the book itself. I'll have to do that thanks

Thanks Lewy! It can be so hard to judge them with the little experience I have in that regard. My taxi showed me one that was 7/8 above the minimum and it looked achievable in my area. I think that buck had four points and the eye guards. From my recollection your buck should definitely meet the minimum if not more but again, little experience etc.

Being that I've never scored a deer, I don't think I've ever thought about it.  Here is a WT I shot a few years back, I wasn't even thinking about having it mounted (as you can tell by my cut lines) until most that stopped by camp said that in one dandy of a buck off this mountain.  Anyway, I never had it scored, but wonder anyone's thoughts on him (Fred, the dead deer).  I've never hunted for numbers, but had I would this fella be in the ball park??

Add up the numbers to see what it takes to get there. Your looking at 55 inches per side with a 15 inch spread to get to 125. A good estimate for mass on most mature whitetails is 15 ish inches.

These all make it with room to spare by score. Only 2 are bow kills tho.

Buck on the right nets 125, 4 point on the left is shy 119 IIRC.  Obviously NOT archery kills :)

Mostly just the picture angles make them look that way. They were a long ways apart from each other. The hard horned one was much wider and not near as tall as the velvet. And the velvet had a few extras.

Serioulsy, that beam on the front right in the picture looks like a swollen banana, maybe even a plantain!

I know, I had one guy that saw it in person guess 190”. He scores 163” gross. Something about his heaviness is deceiving.

He doesn't mess with dinky P&Y bucks,  he goes strait for the Booners he just gets em with archery take tackle.
