Title: Did anyone hunt the Mt. Baker wilderness last high buck?
Post by: JasonG on February 15, 2021, 01:26:26 PM
Hello all, Just curious if anyone tried hunting the Mt. Baker wilderness for high buck last year? Not looking for spots just overall experience. Trying to do my first high buck this year! Thanks Jason

I bear hunted there three of the four weekends leading up to High Buck. Lots of people both hunters and hikers in a very small area. It seemed like an excellent area for bears, but we never saw any deer. Tons of elk sign though. You'll just need to get out and check it out for yourself though

Been there before. Scout your topo map. Figure what is a tough hike, cuz if it is easy a lot of non-hunters are likely to be around. Basically as soon as you drop off a ridge line you are in thick forest. think through how you want to hunt.

This hunt was a Gong Show last year. Due to covid I think a combination of people doing new things, not traveling across state to their normal areas, People off from work,... etc... all combined for the perfect storm of too many people for the small areas available. I hunted one day and bagged it.

I did the exact same thing! More people than I've ever seen.  Every person I ran into was relocated by fires or had cancelled out of state hunts. Not to mention late September is the peak time for 'blacktail paranoia' and nocturnal behavior.
